Getting rid of one item a day thread number 14 – where we extract precious autumn leaves, rocks and twigs from our children

stealthninjamummy · 18/10/2020 08:52

Well I never thought I’d still be here, on the 14th thread where a bunch of mumsnetters get rid of one item a day while we slowly declutter and reorganise our houses.

It’s autumn and some of us have commented on our children’s beloved treasures that are coming in like conkers and precious twigs that have been named. This is the thread where we focus on sneaking these things out and getting the house ready for Christmas even if we don’t know what Christmas will be like this year.

New joiners are always welcome, just get rid of one item and let us know. We’ve all different issues and challenges and it’s nice to have a friendly chat with a fellow mumsnetter.

Previous thread here.

And for 2020 some of us are also aiming to get rid of 2020 items!

@IWillWearThatGlitteryWoolly oh no! Hope he does not develop symptoms.

SleepingStandingUp · 09/12/2020 08:50

@IWillWearThatGlitteryWoolly

Aaaagh. Email from school last night announcing DS2 had a group-work lesson on Friday with someone who tested positive yesterday. Have shut him in room with red cross on door, and desperately working through conflicting guidelines to fathom who else needs to do what.

All decluttering off until I know which way is up!

Oh that's crap. I think essentially no one else has to isolate so long as DS2 doesn't get symptoms. Does it cause an issue for school runs? Here of you have siblings on different years you're expected to take the isolating child and leave them in the car / come late then early if you walk.
SleepingStandingUp · 09/12/2020 08:54

Going to go and walk in the same park as my best friend at the same time as her with our babies later so o can give her some scalp lotion for her baby. Also have a book to give her, a parcel to deliver, and two return parcels to send.

Realised the kids break up next Friday so that's an end to any kind of tidying lol, a week in T3 with 3 kids in winter whilst DH works upstairs, safe from them all 😂

I need to start wrapping and posting presents which will constitute the main declutter for the rest of the month before the house gets inundated with plastic, cardboard and toys

RaspberryBlonde · 09/12/2020 09:39

Thinking of those of you with self isolating DC, we have been lucky with only one class impacted so far at our school but it must be tough especially with SEN in the mix.

Have had a quick look at toys and put a few that are too young for DD and too old for DS away. Also sneaked a few destroyed dolls clothes out of the toybox.

I'm aiming to finish wrapping presents etc this week so I can do some more decluttering before Christmas. Posting some presents tomorrow so that will be an out. Massive charity pile here too!

stealthninjamummy · 09/12/2020 09:56

gassylasy 5 isolations? you must be desperate for this to be over.

glitterywooly oh no poor ds2. I hope he’s ok and doesn’t get covid. Luckily dd1 is old enough that I can leave her in the house alone for short periods and she doesn’t have to do the school run.

Well someone hasn’t turned up for Lego Duplo. Fortunately someone else wanted it but it’s just so crap. When I buy something I always turn up. Last week someone started to mess me around so I sold it to someone else and she told me off. I probably should’ve waited for her but I have zero tolerance for flakiness now.

No plans today, other than helping dd1 do hard maths and maybe putting a few more toys on Facebook sales. I have a game exdh bought me to go. And I have the bottles / textiles I bagged up yesterday - hopefully I can swing by at the supermarket recycling centre before I pick up dd2 from school.

glitterywooly I have stocked up for a fortnight too. I have an online delivery coming later which is full of frozen and tinned food. I started by isolating dd1 in her room and leaving meals outside her door but I cannot not cuddle her so I am prepared in case we all get it. She is claiming that 7 kids in her class have tested positive although I ‘only’ know of four. We’re not even in a very high area of covid cases so I would guess asymptomatic cases are sky high in secondary schools. Fortunately no one is badly sick that we know of.

i am feeling a bit ropey today. i am hoping this isn't the start of something.

need to do an online shop and also want to get out for a walk tomorrow (day off). yay.

SandAndSea · 09/12/2020 14:29

My item today is an open bag of cat litter which I hate using - it's going to a cat charity.

I've been powering through my jobs list. I'm in the process of organising a new car tyre which is the last of several car jobs recently. (They come to the house.)

This afternoon, I've got a charity coming to collect most of my pile, which will be a big relief as it's taking up far too much room now.

ememem84 · 09/12/2020 15:29

have packed away my wine delivery. 12 bottles arrived plus a bottle of gin (for dh for christmas).

Vinorosso74 · 09/12/2020 19:03

I have 6 bottles of wine coming tomorrow (hopefully) along with some food. I don't class wine as clutter.
I've got all my Christmas cards written and ready to post which I'll do tomorrow. I've almost got the parcels ready to post so that will declutter some things. Been good about getting packaging straight out in the recycling.
I'm worried in case DD's year group bubble have any cases and we have to isolate. Getting out the house to the gym and my two volunteer shifts are currently the only things keeping me sane right now!

footprintsintheslow · 09/12/2020 19:28

@stealthninjamummy great that you are making some money on the toy selling.

@IWillWearThatGlitteryWoolly good luck are you all getting tested now or isolating?

Day 92:
Shingles has developed now just to be the cherry on the sciatica cake.
Novelty reindeer hair clips in charity bag.
Collectible Humpty Dumpty toy listed to sell.
Photos and emails.

glitterywooly it’s so surprising the inconsistency between schools. Dd1s whole year is off and self isolating even though it seems like there have only been cases in one or two classes.

Anyway I have sold a few bits today but not had any time to declutter. I also ordered a few presents so that’s negative decluttering.

OP posts:
ememem84 · 09/12/2020 21:29

Our rules here are the whole household must isolate until negative tests on the one who’s been in contact.

We are lucky in that as a household we haven’t had to do it this time round. First lockdown in May I’m certain dh had the virus but his day 3 test was negative and that was the one and only one he had. More testing now though.

I wouldn’t have minded isolating so much in summer - our rules are as long as you don’t leave your home (so not even staying indoors so we could have used the garden - I don’t know what the U.K. rules are). But in winter. We’d go bananas.

EllieQ · 09/12/2020 23:11

Sorry to hear that your DS has to self-isolate too, Glittery, though the image of a red cross on his bedroom door made me laugh Smile

Today’s update: one parcel and two cards posted off by DH for today’s outs. No further sorting done today, just work and the school run and spending 30 minutes in a cold playground while DD and her friend ran around...

We have had one giant in, though - a dolls house from PIL for DD for Xmas. They bought it from FB marketplace and it’s bigger than we were expecting Shock I have no idea where we can put it! It’s currently hidden in the shed.

SleepingStandingUp · 09/12/2020 23:26

@footprintsintheslow oh crikey!! Hope you can get some rest,. dH had it last Xmas when we had the tiny babies so hoping yours stays put until well after new year. I'd send hugs but I remember (being moaned at about) how sore is it

@EllieQ oooh I sold a big one to grandparent aged people 😂😂😂

SleepingStandingUp · 09/12/2020 23:30

No outs today, forgot to post my parcel, my letter or take the lotion for my friend. So that went well lol

Wrote a pile of Xmas cards though so I know exactly which ones I still need, and will do the parcels, letter and last bag of charity stuff tomorrow. Hopefully sold a load of twin clothes to go at the weekend. We all know how flaky FB can be bit she seemed nice

stealthninjamummy · 10/12/2020 08:17

ememem84 hope you’re feeling better today.

footprints sorry to hear about the shingles, that can be nasty.

My out today is a letter to next door that was wrongly delivered to me. I have had it for about a fortnight.

My house is back to chaos again. I think having dd1 home, cooking for her, trying to cook more nutritious meals anyway to increase immunity, and Xmas shopping means I am living in a mess. I still have a bag of bottles and piles of batteries / old lightbulbs. Must get them out today.

But better thanks steath whole day to myself now that dh has gone to work and the kids have been taken to nursery. Yay.

Planning some supér sorting out today and some super self care. I think my general feeling of yuk is due to the time of year the excitement the weather the exhaustion.

RaspberryBlonde · 10/12/2020 09:42

Three parcels dispatched to the post office today. I was feeling a bit guilty about ordering online and sending direct to people for most gifts but not after paying for the postage!

Hope the shingles clear up soon footprints

Love the idea that Ellie may have got Sleeping's dolls' house!

Are you in Kent, Sleeping, and were you asked to post it up north instead of the grandparents picking it up...?

footprintsintheslow · 10/12/2020 10:13

@SleepingStandingUp I've known another new father get shingles straight after the birth too! Must be sooooo tough for them.🤪

I get it about four times a year and it's not as bad as when people who get it as a one off. I always get it when pregnant, always when I've given birth and always when it's really inconvenient.

SleepingStandingUp · 10/12/2020 11:14

Booooo Ellie does not have my dolls house. I'm in the Midlands and the grandparents collected it by car
