Getting rid of one item a day thread number 14 – where we extract precious autumn leaves, rocks and twigs from our children

stealthninjamummy · 18/10/2020 08:52

Well I never thought I’d still be here, on the 14th thread where a bunch of mumsnetters get rid of one item a day while we slowly declutter and reorganise our houses.

It’s autumn and some of us have commented on our children’s beloved treasures that are coming in like conkers and precious twigs that have been named. This is the thread where we focus on sneaking these things out and getting the house ready for Christmas even if we don’t know what Christmas will be like this year.

New joiners are always welcome, just get rid of one item and let us know. We’ve all different issues and challenges and it’s nice to have a friendly chat with a fellow mumsnetter.

Previous thread here.

And for 2020 some of us are also aiming to get rid of 2020 items!

A few big candles put into the post lock down charity donation
Some plugs of unknown use binned, bag of mini usb plugs pit aside to donate.
Bottle on non alcoholic mulled "wine" binned
Some old CD cases and scratched CDs binned.
Just about to sotto it son's desk which probably won't involve throwing anything because he's 5 so it's all masterpieces.

Not a bad day all in all as we also did dance class and a walk up to the local Cairn

confusedofengland · 07/11/2020 17:08

Very little out today. One felt tip pen that didn't work in the bin & 1 stone painted with a poppy laid at the war memorial (DS2 with Beavers). I don't really get to do much when everybody is home.

footprintsintheslow · 07/11/2020 18:24

Day 50 and barely anything gone today but lots of fun with the toddler.

I have deleted photos and emails and also put some decorating bits back in the shed.

I'm now going to 'declutter' some wool by crocheting a couple of hats for a toddler and newborn.

ooooh a late surge. pair of boots i broke today, a toy sword - broken, a nught light - half broken and not used, a green rabbit that collects dust and i brought when i was at Uni, sometime near the turn of the century. literally.

I'm buggered for tomorrow, the bins are FULL to the limit, even with a bigger one its a constant battle with 3 in nappies

stealthninjamummy · 07/11/2020 22:40

An ok day without really trying. I threw away some broken fairy wings and 3 faded horrible placemats that are too scruffy to go to a charity shop.

I also decided to get rid of four big Christmas decorations that just don’t seem to fit anywhere. And I found a weird thing made by dd1 that was dated 2013. I think it might be a candle but it’s wrapped in cellophane and looks like a rock.

I also deleted 300 flylady emails! I have fallen off the flylady wagon, I think she’s great when you don’t know what to do but I’ve been quite focused recently.

November day 7 update: I threw out a hairbrush that was just gathering dust as I never use it, and we finally got rid of the Halloween pumpkin. Difficult day with tantrums from DD, and DH being annoying/ grumpy. Was cheered up by the news from America, and by watching Strictly.

StrangeAddiction · 07/11/2020 23:59

2 empty meds boxes binned
New hand rail and a couple of glass panels up rather than out. At least they aren't getting in the way anymore but waiting for the other panels to be delivered.

stealthninjamummy · 08/11/2020 07:19

strangeaddiction are these glass panels for your stairs? Are you doing it yourself? Id love to have glass instead of spindles to make my hallway lighter but so expensive. I bought paint to paint my dark wooden spindles about three years ago and it’s another job I haven’t yet done!

I’ve got a food delivery coming so today I’m going to clean the fridge and get rid of / eat any old food. Other than that I don’t intend to do much - just tidy the post pile and maybe do shredding.

Old bath mat out yesterday. We had to buy a new one so it’s been replaced already but looks much nicer.

SleepingStandingUp · 08/11/2020 08:47

Is it too early to put the kids in recycling?

Vinorosso74 · 08/11/2020 09:54

Oh dear one of those mornings! You could try Freecycle either?
SleepingStandingUp · 08/11/2020 10:41

You think I can give away teething 11 month old twins and a VERY loud 5 year old? Seems unlikely 🤣🤣

I'm trying to give away a bottle of dentinox and I've put two books in an envelope to post tomorrow. Not sure I'll get anything actually out today

stealthninjamummy · 08/11/2020 11:23

sleepingstandingup to me it doesn’t matter if stuff leaves the house, my ‘one a day’ is just something bagged up and ready to go. Stuff probably only leaves my house two days a week normally but I always get rid of 7 things - usually much more than that.

Today I’m expecting a princess dress to leave the house and a toy from Facebook selling. I also put some old boots and glass jars in the car to recycle. Last time in lockdown some of our recycling facilities were closed, I hope they’re open today.

SleepingStandingUp · 08/11/2020 11:40

Yes true, esp when we're not meant to be going out unnecessarily.
Opened the toy box and found a third Xylophone so that's going to my mate tomorrow. Some princess books and the dentinox into the charity bag. Train stuff and toy golf clubs into the garage.

Miaowse · 08/11/2020 11:57

I fell off the thread as I’ve been obsessively following the election. I’m pretty sure I managed to declutter enough to keep me on track. Outs include: a pen that was running out of ink, some old catalogues, empty envelopes with scribbled notes on the back, a glass.

thelastmullercorner · 08/11/2020 13:05

Not doing amazing here, but found some paperwork in the cupboard (why can I not just get into the same spot?!) that has gone into recycling. Clothes to go to charity shop in boot of car. A bag for life of packages gone to post office from eBay.

Have listed some more things on eBay today. Doubt a lot of it will sell as it's baby clothes, but it feels wrong not to try selling things first. I think that's a big problem for me as I'm also time poor

RaspberryBlonde · 08/11/2020 13:52

Managed the plants and the desk yesterday - a few dried up pens in the bin, half a dozen bits of paper work shredded and a few things that DH had 'tidied' relocated to their proper homes. Also had to bin a toy car after it was pushed across the room too enthusiastically and fell to pieces.

Added a top DS was bought that I don't like to the charity pile. He has loads of stuff so no point hanging onto it when it will never be worn.

I think

RaspberryBlonde · 08/11/2020 13:53

Posted too soon! Was going to say I think I would feel like I was making very slow progress if things actually had to leave the house! So many bags for the charity shop!

stealthninjamummy · 08/11/2020 14:42

I was thinking the same raspberryblonde but I already have several bags of stuff to go. I reckon in a month it will be really annoying having stuff lying around but also really really good evidence of our hard work.

confusedofengland · 08/11/2020 16:17

Very little out here today. We did take our pumpkin shells to the woods, which combined exercise & decluttering! Plus I have cleared the stairs to my room (second floor), although that stuff has been reassigned rather than gone out. Have earmarked a couple of things to list for sale - a raincoat of mine & a too-small jumper from DS3, both decent makes so hopefully will sell.

Vinorosso74 · 08/11/2020 16:40

Spent a bit of time tidying the back garden today: pruning, weeding, clearing up leaves so that's decluttered ready for winter.

footprintsintheslow · 08/11/2020 19:03

Day 51:
A cup and saucer in the charity bag
Emails and photo cull.

Pickings are getting scarce here now.

StrangeAddiction · 08/11/2020 20:24

@stealthninjamummy yeah we're doing them ourselves, buying the parts on eBay, couldn't afford it otherwise! It's taking forever as Plan A went straight out the window when we realised our old posts and handrail weren't high enough and so we've replaced it all but for us who have no experience and a house that Jack built we're slowly getting there. I just can't wait until it's all done this week.

An empty tub of wood filler out.

gassylady · 08/11/2020 20:25

@footprintsintheslow slim pickings definitely indicates progress Grin I have four more eBay items to post tomorrow or Tuesday.

Failed again to get playmobil listed Blush perhaps I should just sling it all in charity bag but don’t know if they will be accepting more donations before Christmas.
Walked into utility tonight to empty tumble drier and suddenly noticed a tub with several pairs of wellies in. Fairly sure they will have been outgrown so will sort through at some point this week. I’m in there everyday not sure how they haven’t registered on my radar before now 🤷‍♀️
