Stinking washing machine

So I've cleaned my washing machine with the special cleaner and on its self cleaning cycle. I've also put drain unblocker down the sink next to it (utility room). However as soon as I turn the washing machine on and it starts to run, the drain stinks!!! What could be causing it? Not sure what else to do?

Dish washer tablet on full 90 degrees hot wash.

Cup of soda crystals on a 90 degree wash.

Do you use big box powder or washing liquid?

Washing at cold temps with liquids is much more likely to cause build up and stink issues in washing machines. Also, leave the door and the drawer open between washes to allow it to dry and air.

If it still stinks after a couple of boil washes with soda crystals, I’d be either getting a plumber in to check for clogs or having a look myself, starting with the u bend under the sink.

Try vinegar wash and if still no joy good old bleach

I use washing tablets and normally at a 40 degree wash. Maybe I need to do a higher wash more often.

The washing machine itself doesn't smell. I've had my head right in the drum Grin. It's like I can smell it from the sink next to it.

When our washing machine starts to smell I chuck a load of bleach into the drum and soda crystals in the drawer and run it on a long cycle 90degree wash and it seems to do the trick.

ChodeOfChodeBall · 24/09/2020 23:35

90 degree wash cycle with an empty machine (can't remember whether to put powder in or not - you'd have to Google).

Check the filter, too. Mine had several hair bobbles and some Euros in it.

BluePheasant · 24/09/2020 23:36

Oh in that case it sounds like it's a plumbing problem with the sink. Are you able to take the trap underneath off to clean that out?

Roguesausage · 24/09/2020 23:38

Check the drain hose at the back is in the right position or stagnant water will collect in it.

londongirl12 · 25/09/2020 13:45

Thank you all. Putting bleach anywhere always makes me nervous!! I'll check the filter too

We have this too, except in our case it’s the drum that smells. Genuinely as though something has died in it. It smells no better after two washes at 90 degrees with a kilo of soda crystals between them. Currently running a 90 degree wash with bio powder.

We normally use liquid detergent in the drum and most of our washes, bar towels, are at 40. I try to leave the door open most of the time and do a maintenance wash every few months.

What else can I try?!

positivedreams · 02/10/2020 12:28

I have this same problem. Sink is fine washing machine is fine until it's on and the smell out of the sink is awful I have to keep the plugs in. We've had the pipe to the outside changed as it's against the outside wall of our kitchen. Still happens, even the plumber couldn't figure out what it was 🤷🏻‍♀️ would love to know!
