Where do you do your ironing?

We have a utility room with washer and drier. Washing gets collected into baskets then kept in spare room until ironed/folded. Ironing board permanently out and there is a hanging rail there for uniforms.

I want to turn this into "proper bedroom" for one of our kids so need to find another solution for the ironing mountain.

I suppose wash, dry, fold and put away in one go is one solution

Where do you keep your ironing boards when not in use?

I have the ironing board and iron in the kitchen cupboard, I put it in front of the tv. I hang the stuff up and put it all away. Ironing board goes back in the cupboard. I do this every 1-2 weeks but it's only DD and I and I don't have a huge amount of stuff that needs ironing.

I have a utility cupboard in the bathroom with the washing machine and clothes baskets (one for dirty washing one for ironing), but keep the ironing board in a cupboard in the bedroom where I do the ironing listening to Radio 4. There are lovely floor to ceiling windows which can be open or closed depending on the weather. Keep it in the room where you are going to use it - it’s the next best thing to being able to keep it up all the time (as I used to do in my lovely Berlin basement laundry room). Find a nice spot, have something interesting to listen to and ceases to be a chore and becomes a pleasant diversion.

It permanantly set up in my bedroom. We wear lots of cotton which always needs to be ironed I find.
I just iron as needed because it not something I could dedicate chunks of time to, but sadly it is necessary. You can always tell when things need ironing, sorry.

Topseyt · 15/09/2020 09:05

I'm not even that sure where mine are any more as I never iron. Gave it up years ago as it is such a massive waste of time and energy.

Just stop ironing. It's very liberating.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 15/09/2020 09:06

In the kitchen, I've got a fancy holder on the wall for the board & iron. I usually iron in the kitchen because I normally only have 3-4 items at a time. If for some reason I've got loads I'll do it in the living room though.

I am not typical of MN because I quite enjoy the satisfaction of transforming a creased linen dress into a smart looking crease free dress. I don't have many clothes that require ironing, so I don't find it a waste of time or energy. With DD away at university I am not time poor either.
FippertyGibbett · 15/09/2020 09:14

I don’t.

Bluntness100 · 15/09/2020 09:16

I seldom to never iron, everything gets hung on Airers to dry and doesn’t need it. It is occasionally done for a shirt or something. The board sits in a spare room.

TrickyD · 15/09/2020 09:27

Our washing machine is in the utility room, but opening off there is a small drying room where the boiler is and the tumble drier sits, but very usefully, the previous owner put up a series of rails crossing the room, perfect for hanging up lots of washing, so the drier is rarely used.
The ironing board is permanently set up there, ready for the rare occasions when it is used.
Dh irons his stuff if he wants to, not often; I sometimes iron mine, sheets etc are not ironed.

SummerOfComedy · 15/09/2020 09:47

Our house is pretty small. I have always taken the washed clothes upstairs and stuff that needs ironing,I hang up straight away in a section of the wardrobe that's dedicated to that.
I keep my ironing board in a corner of the bedroom.
Most of the creases have fallen out by the time I come to iron, so makes things easier.
I can sit on the bed and iron while watching tv.
I make things as easy as I can because I hate ironing. 😊

Ginfordinner · 15/09/2020 09:55

I would like to know which magical washing machines people have where clothes don't need ironing. I line dry when I can and pull clothes into shape, but cotton and linen items still need ironing.

Or maybe I just have higher standards Grin

badg3r · 15/09/2020 10:17

I was speaking about ironing to my mum, she says that more modern clothes don't seem to need it as much. Certainly synthetic stuff doesn't show if not ironed after a few minutes of wear. We do have a few cotton shirts etc that look terrible if not pressed but use them so rarely it's not worth ironing them when they are needed. Our kids are also still very young so after half a days wear the creases are outdone by the paint stains and residual food 😂

badg3r · 15/09/2020 10:18

Not worth intoning then until when they are needed

nettie434 · 15/09/2020 10:28

@PickAChew

In my kitchen diner, with the patio doors open, if it's warm, watching the bird feeders and listening to the radio. I keep the board down the side of a big larder cupboard.
Sounds perfect Pickachew! I am a living room in front of the TV/radio/music person too, but I would love a utility room as I normally have a monster ironing pile. Board and iron in the under stairs cupboard, although too often both are left in hall Blush
VanillaSpiceCandle · 15/09/2020 11:14

I don’t have a utility room but had a new kitchen and got a bespoke utility cupboard which is tall enough to have the ironing board inside with shelves for the iron, funnel and other cleaning bits. It used to live upstairs in the boiler cupboard and was such a faff. Now it’s near the washing machine and dryer it’s much easier to quickly get our for a couple of items.

user1471523870 · 15/09/2020 13:34

We have a cupboard in the utility room that is designed for ironing boards (slim and with no shelves inside). It sits there with the iron and few other stuff. The 'mountain' of items to iron is normally quite small as we just iron the essentials (well...our lovely cleaners does!). Everything gets folded and put away straight out of the tumble dryer. If anything needs ironing it gets folded and put in a clean laundry basket, that is stored in the above cupboard.

DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy · 15/09/2020 14:08

I iron in my kitchen, keep iron and board in the hoover cupboard. I only iron school uniforms, so I wash them on a Saturday, line dry them (usually) then iron on Sunday. They're over a couple of chairs overnight.

I don't have w magic washing machine, but I do live in a windy place, so creases tend to come out on the line. It depends on what you wear - I don't really wear cotton/linen things that crease.

MrsCollinssettled · 15/09/2020 14:17

Converted spare bedroom to dressing room, added a tv and all ironing is done up there. Used to do it downstairs but easier to just transfer ironed items straight to wardrobe. Also no piles of ironing visible if visitors drop in.

hiredandsqueak · 15/09/2020 17:19

I keep the ironing board in the downstairs storage room, I keep the iron in the cupboard in the hallway and I iron in the dining room so that I can put the clothes in separate piles. It also means I put the ironing away straight after as otherwise I can't use the dining table.

AgeLikeWine · 15/09/2020 17:22

I don’t.

OK, I do very occasionally iron clothes, but it’s definitely not something I do regularly. DP irons his own work shirts, because they are his shirts, not mine.
