How do I clean this very old, very dirty, wood?

I've been gifted a piece of furniture, I've longed for it forever and I'm thrilled to have it.
I don't know how old but old, I don't know which type of wood it is but it's very dirty (almost soft and tacky) in places and I'd really like to clean it to without destroying it. Does anyone know how best to do it please?

Previous owners family won't know anything about it, it's sat in a dusty old storage unit for years and the previous owner was 100 yrs + (but don't know when they got it)

I think it will depend on the finish, if french polished Id seek expert advice, but otherwise wipe with a damp cloth thats been rinsed in warm water, vinegar and a tiny drop of washing up liquid, then beeswax and elbow grease. If varnished it may need stripping back and re doing.

Take it to a professional

I can remember stripping an oak table that was sticky to the touch with a small flat-bladed knife after dampening the surface with meths.
Then we let the surface dry out and after that polish and elbow grease.

You could start with Murphy's oil soap, get the grime off then assess if it needs stripping or not.
