Question for dog owners - do you wash your dog's bedding in your washing machine - do dog hairs get everywhere?!

Due to pick up our gorgeous little lab puppy in a couple of weeks and trying to get everything sorted out. I have got her a plastic dog bed with some vet bed in (whicj will go in her crate). I can wash the vet bed and I am planning to do this once a week (to try and cut out doggy smells). However, will there be a ton of hairs in my washing machine?? Will I need to clean out washing machine of hairs before doing our washing?

Very silly question I know! How often do you wash your dog beds?

Thanks.

Our lab used to shed hairs dreadfully. They were like tumbleweed blowing in big balls around the room edges.

I actually used to hoover the dog herself with a vax attachment, on gentle suck. She loved it.

If you shake the bedding (bits you are putting in washer) outside, you will get rid of most hairs before washing. We used to hang her bedding on the washing line and beat it with an old fashioned victorian carpet beater.

The washing machine never seemed to fill with hairs.

Labs are dreadful hair shedders though and you will be covered all the time. We had ours in the 80s when thick black opaque tights were fashionable. She just had to brush within an inch of me and my legs would covered in blonde hair.

I only wash our dog bed cover about once a month, and as themoon says, I shake it outside first.

I find it does leave hairs in the machine so I run a cleaning cycle afterwards - 50C quick wash with a handful of er, em, white baking powder stuff, can't remember it's name for the life of me but MN uses it for everything...

Thanks for the tips - will try the hoover on her!!

We went to see her yesterday (they are now just over 5 weeks old) and I was wearing a black cardigan. I was absolutely covered by the time we came away - maybe should have chosen the black one!!

Think I'll enjoy the last hair free weeks at home!!

Enjoy your lady labrador. They are the most wonderful dogs. So easy to train. They just want to please you and be in your good books all the time

lapsedrunner · 07/10/2007 16:32

My solution was to buy a breed that doesn't moult, like our Irish Terrier .

ScaryScienceT · 07/10/2007 16:39

I feel like a sloth - never even considered washing the dog's bedding. Her bed is a faux leather job on one side and faux fur on the other - I don't think it would respond well to washing.

Besides, her real bed is the same as mine, and I was that on a regular basis (whether it needs it or not )

boomie · 07/10/2007 17:30

I am so excited about getting her. We took the DDs with us yesterday and they were beside themselves. DHs parents have always had labs so he knows the breed well. I'm just a bit conscious about the doggy smell - any other tips welcome about reducing doggy smell!!

We did this a year ago. It is a special time

BroccoliSpears · 07/10/2007 17:50

I have a lab and my washing machine has hairs in it from our clothes and household stuff that I wash - I don't think washing her bed (after a good shake outside) makes much difference.

I figure they're clean hairs.

ScaryScienceT · 07/10/2007 17:51

Probably a good hoover is the most effective.

Magicmayhem · 07/10/2007 18:11

dog smell.. whats that.. I garentee (SP) that after a month or so you will think your dog smells lovely, even when people say she has a doggy smell you will not be able to smell it...

I follow what others say and have to confess to cleaning it out with bacterial spray and a cloth before I do the monthly washing machine cleaner programme.

Labs are wonderful, we've had ours for a year (a rescue) At the moment she is moulting lots...Watch out when your clothes shopping ...you tend to avoid black and think oh yes white it won't show the dog hairs. As youv'e probably guessed we have a yellow Lab!!

tracyk · 10/10/2007 12:10

I used to hoover the worst bits off, then wash in the machine. But ours is a washer/dryer and I used to do a sock wash and a 10 min tumble dry afterwards and it picked it all up. Just don't do a towel wash straight afterwards, I used to and I'd have dog hairs in my eyes and fingers when trying to put in contact lenses!

Wisteria · 10/10/2007 12:13

A young dog that gets plenty of exercise and the odd hose down won't smell. Give dental chews for teeth as it's often the breath that pongs a bit.

I wash bedding when I wash her harness as that does reek - labs will go in all water, dirty or not and that can leave them a bit whiffy .

They only really smell 'doggy' when they get older and like most things it happens over time, you probably won't really notice it!

LadyOfTheFlowers · 10/10/2007 12:25

Oh God!

Labs and hair!

I have two black Labs and my carpet is grey all the time! It is supposed to be cream. I just do not have the time to hoover every day.

I have read that Labs shed hair all year round and I agree with this, it does get worse in summer, but I personally find it bad all year round!

I wash their cushions and blankets and cuddlies in the machine but even if I don't do it for a bit, the washing machine gets full of their hairs anyway, off of clothes and everything else. It collects at the front near the glass and in the rubber lip of the door deal..... Lovely!

I have dog hair in my freezer, in my tropical fish tank, in the car, in my Mums car/house, Dh has a 'Hairy Area' in the fridge at work where he puts his lunch cooler bag thing (So named by his work buddies!)......

It goes on and on.
Someone is bound to say 'Mine doesn't moult like that' and I will say 'Lucky you then, but I have 2 who moult ALL THE TIME!'

LadyOfTheFlowers · 10/10/2007 12:27

Oh yeah, you can never smell your own dog in your own house either.....
Everyone else can though! lol

themoon66 · 10/10/2007 12:54

LOL about the hairs everywhere. I was still hoovering blonde labrador hairs out of the car a whole 18 months after she'd died
