Kitchen worktop is sticky!

So we’ve just got the keys today for our new house. The kitchen sold it to me when we first looked at the property. Really well designed with tonnes of space and a gorgeous solid wood worktop. Problem is big parts of the work top are really sticky to touch. I know you have to be careful what products you use on wood but even after we wiped it down with soapy water it still feels really sticky. Happy to get someone in to treat it or restore it but having not had one before i don’t know what to do for the best.

Sand it down slightly and treat with oil. Can't remember the name, something like Oslo/Osmo oil, available from Amazon. Not particularly expensive

Thanks @30under I’ll have a look for that. It seems worse in the higher use areas. The island in the middle where the sink is for example is probably the worst part. Also around the sink seems quite damaged by water from the taps.

They have probably re oiled it recently to try and conceal some of the water damage round taps

Would re-oiling it make it feel so sticky though @Solasum ?

yeah it might do. I would say give it a good scrub with a scrubbing brush and washing up liquid & Water. Let it dry and if still sticky look at sanding and re oiling lightly - they may just have been a bit heavy handed

@RB68 the sticky ness is definitely around the higher used areas on the worktop. Around the sink especially. I’m just a little nervous doing anything myself as I’ve never had this type of worktop before.

Will give it a good scrub when we get there later today. Official moving day today and I’m already awake doing last minute stuff.

Had lots of wooden work surfaces. If solid wood you can always resand and start again. Very very easy to sort.
Good luck with move.

Have you reported it to the builders who installed the kitchen? Or whoever your contact is re buying this house partly based on the nice kitchen.

I wouldn't do anything myself. I'd want them to resolve it.
