Still throwing an item away a day – part 13

StealthNinjaMum · 23/08/2020 20:13

One of mumsnet's friendliest corners this is the 13th 'one item a day' thread to inspire and motivate a group of mumsnetters to declutter their houses, gardens and lives bit by bit, one step at a time.

Each day we get rid of just one item and report back. We’ve all got different challenges and problems and it keeps us going to discuss them and work through them together.

Newbies are welcome. It’s not just decluttering, join us in the chat about recycling, organisation, grumbles about hoarding family members and obviously our many successes.

Previous thread here.

And for 2020 some of us are also aiming to get rid of 2020 items!

@powershowerforanhour I was going to ask if you’re from NI based on your username Grin

TheGhostofGlumy · 13/10/2020 22:21

Congratulations @wondering7777
Today's outs were some velcro bibs. Dd2 does not approve of bibs, if not tied in then they won't last 5 seconds.
Tomorrow I am venturing into town, hoping to drop off the rag bag while I'm there.

SandAndSea · 14/10/2020 04:29

Lovely news, wondering7777. Congratulations! FlowersBearCake

HauntingHazel · 14/10/2020 06:14

Just stopping by to say congratulations to wondering

No new outs here from me, but DD did bring me at least 10 items of clothing and other random stuff including a really old netbook (small laptop) that's at least 11 years old now. She hasn't used it in over a year and it's so basic it really can only be used for browsing the internet. I'm willing to get rid, BIL tends to hoard stuff like that so he can fix it up and sell it, so might see if DH is okay with letting that go to him this weekend.

StealthNinjaMum · 14/10/2020 13:10

@footprintsintheslow I asked dd1 about the toothbrushes and apparently the teacher was intending to use them to create patterns with oil chalks (not sure what those are?) but now isn’t allowed because of covid. Some of our toothbrushes were horrendous, after dd1 has used them for a few days the bristles are practically horizontal so not good for doing anything with.

powershowerforanhour I had no idea people recycled toothbrushes and empty toothpaste tubes. That teracycle website is incredible, it has links to so many depots to recyle things like there is a depot 5 miles away from me to recycle Pringles packets – we get through quite a lot of those – and all kinds of products – contact lenses, ellas pouches, carex, Baylis and harding, bread bags, Hasbro toy and games etc.

wondering7777 congratulations! While my dc napped I used to nap and eat chocolate, so I’m impressed you’re doing housework.

A newspaper out now, some papers shredded, slippers going. I’ve found some wellies that are probably too small for dd2 but will get her to test later. I have also put one of my three dressing gowns in a ‘rags’ bag.

Took the rag bag to the textiles bin today, so that was a big out, although I think technically I already counted all that stuff when it went into the bag so will try to find something else.

stealthninjamum · 14/10/2020 14:09

glumy I tend to count things when I put them in a pile rather than when they leave the house. At the moment it’s harder than ever to get rid of stuff so I do have a few piles and bags.

Yesterday was crazy as I had to go into town. It’s very strange seeing it so quiet. Managed to throw out a bottle of spray body oil I was never going to use. Tip and charity slots booked so that should be a fair few bags out at the end of the week. Gives me a focus for my decluttering this week too.

Vinorosso74 · 14/10/2020 17:29

Not much progress here sadly.
Binned some manky conkers I discovered in DD's room today. I really need to get my arse into gear to shift the bigger items.

footprintsintheslow · 14/10/2020 18:44

Day 26:

Cleaned one kitchen cupboard out first thing and got rid of 2 vases on freecycle, 2 glass bottles as use ups and 2 Tuppawear pots with no lids.

One cupboard a day is very doable.

MrsTidyHouse · 14/10/2020 20:23

Very little real decluttering today. Tidying and sorting, and bits of rubbish in bin. Loads of arts and crafts in boxes for deciding later. Schooleork in ring-binders and on shelves.

I now have "my spot".

Adult DS has been reminded that household bin gets emptied this Friday, and that he needs to bin as much of his rubbish as possible tomorrow.

moglovesquotes · 14/10/2020 20:29

No decluttering but recycling has gone out.
Other out-dead sparrow. Nice present thanks cat Hmm

confusedofengland · 14/10/2020 21:32

Sold a toy car mat for a pitiful amount today. Also threw out some of last year's conkers Blush and put this year's in their place (displayed in a glass vase). That's about it today, hoping to do a lot more tomorrow.

confusedofengland · 14/10/2020 21:34

Congratulations to wondering on your baby Flowers

RaspberryBlonde · 15/10/2020 09:43

Out - one picture coloured in by DD's friend. Apparently friend didn't want it so she brought it home. She does this a lot. Aaaargh!

Congratulations on the new arrival wondering.

I need to check out that recycling website, have a couple of toothbrushes that are about to be replaced. I do use some for cleaning too but DH and I have electric toothbrushes so they are no use.

SingToTheSky · 15/10/2020 11:21

Congratulations wondering! :)

Only out lately is a pair of trainer socks that kept slipping off my heels. I also need to get rid of some clothes but they do need replacing as I have very few.

TheGhostofGlumy · 15/10/2020 11:24

Another morning in dd1's room today, so more kinder egg tat out. Other tiny toys stored in a basket on the windowsill. Hopefully that's all the itty bitty checking hazards cleared up now, about 6 months after dd2 started rummaging through her sister's things.

gassylady · 15/10/2020 11:30

Another one adding new baby congratulations to wondering Also amazed that you are even thinking about decluttering. I’m sure I did nothing but accumulate for several years after my first arrived GrinShock

gassylady · 15/10/2020 11:52

Bag dropped at charity shop with outgrown school uniform, other kids clothes and a couple of unwanted stocking filler type gifts. Three eBay items with bids on so hopefully they’ll be gone this weekend or early next week Grin

footprintsintheslow · 15/10/2020 18:34

Day 27:

One more kitchen cupboard cleaned and a frying pan removed.

Last of the out of date medicines bagged up to go to Chemist.

Touched up paint in hall, stairs and landing. (Not an 'out' but it's because of this thread and the house being very ordered that I have the energy and brain space to even contemplate doing this job).

AlexTheHalloweenCat · 15/10/2020 20:55

Congratulations, wondering! You are doing very well! Stealth, I also only eat chocolate whilst the baby naps, that and watch rubbish TV and read Mumsnet.

KitschPlease I think The Organised Mum Method should be the Organised Adult/Parent Method too! Makes it sound like it is all our job, when it isn't! All these things are very female focused (Mrs Hinch, I'm looking at you).

Stealth I've still fallen off Flylady but think it did help, I still feel more organised. The to do list app is helping the most, I'm chipping away at all the little jobs I forget about.

I've sold some baby things on ebay.

SandAndSea · 15/10/2020 21:25

A few bits for me today:

1 piece of old soap. (I finally got around to re-filling the hand wash.)
1 cleaned cutlery drawer.
1 medicine measuring cup.
1 vase (already counted) thoroughly bubble-wrapped, ready to go to charity.
1 ornamental thingy thoroughly cleaned and bubble-wrapped, also for charity.

PLUS... (are you ready for this??)...

1 graduation film - the original - destroyed and properly out!! (I have digital copies.) This had survived many previous culls so was a biggie for me.

MrsTidyHouse · 15/10/2020 21:36

Got rubbish in the household waste bin. Now out on kerb.
Junk mail now in paper recycling bin.

Enjoying my non-messy living-room for a couple of days before tackling the bookshelves. Devluttered a couple of Netflix items from My List.

powershowerforanhour · 15/10/2020 21:42

Yesterday- pair of broken cheap summer sandals that I intended to fix / close inspection revealed that any fix would realistically break down in no time. En route to the bin I Kondoesquely thanked them for the good times - I wore them at a family beach wedding weekend at foreign destination which was so much fun...I remember I pulled them off to join everyone else who had been thrown or jumped fully clothed in the pool at the rented villa ...and sparked lovely memories of a couple of now-deceased elderly family members who were there including my cousins' other granny that I shared a villa room with - a redoubtable lady with a razor sharp sense of humour who briskly evicted a massive cockroach from the bathroom for me while I cowered outside.

Today cleared out the car boot and reorganised, threw away the rubbish and some paperwork from DD1's old preschool.
