Still throwing an item away a day – part 13

StealthNinjaMum · 23/08/2020 20:13

One of mumsnet's friendliest corners this is the 13th 'one item a day' thread to inspire and motivate a group of mumsnetters to declutter their houses, gardens and lives bit by bit, one step at a time.

Each day we get rid of just one item and report back. We’ve all got different challenges and problems and it keeps us going to discuss them and work through them together.

Newbies are welcome. It’s not just decluttering, join us in the chat about recycling, organisation, grumbles about hoarding family members and obviously our many successes.

Previous thread here.

And for 2020 some of us are also aiming to get rid of 2020 items!

Sorry footprints I missed your post. Yes, I feel that giving stuff away should be easier than that. At one point he wanted me to meet him at the station.
Wellies you could well have had a lucky escape there, but I think I'm going to have to Google green tomato cake to at least see what it looks like.
Stealth carrot and coriander soup. I make a big batch and freeze it to use up carrots.

SandAndSea · 06/10/2020 23:25

You've all inspired me to do a bit more. So, I've put a wash on and cleaned my loo and bathroom radiator. It's one of those towel ladder things and was a bit desperate. I've also cleaned out a bathroom storage container and have 2 tubes of old face cream going out.

stealthninjamum · 06/10/2020 23:37

wildernesstips thanks, that's a good idea. I was googling recipes but nothing grabbed me. Thanks for the soup suggestion glumy - for some reason I have never really liked carrot and coriander soup even though I love carrots and soup. I did find a recipe for roasted carrot salad and I think I might try roasting some tomorrow with peppers and maybe putting in salads for a few days but probably will end up blanching and freezing a few.

Yay sandandsea, good work.

I decluttered my classroom and have a huge pile of items like books and games that I bought to get rid of. Also cleared out all the cds, some fabric and three bags for life of good clothes that I don’t fit anymore.

SandAndSea · 07/10/2020 00:04

Wellies - Sorry to read that about your tomatoes. I was looking forward to hearing how the cake was.

Stealth - I've frozen carrots before. I peeled and chopped them first. Most of them went into smoothies and stews I think.

Stealth - Do you realise that your posts aren't green anymore? I think you must have a typo in your name. (Apologies if this has been covered - I'm a bit behind.)

ememem84 · 07/10/2020 04:20

@StealthNinjaMum carrot and peanut soup? Carrot fries?

I made carrot and rosewater jam once. It was nice initially then I realised it wasn’t good. So it got binned.

On the declutter front I used up a moisturiser and threw away a box from my meds

. I’m back wfh two days a week now as cases here are up to 38 and work are taking early precautions. So maybe get some stuff done tomorrow.

Currently up with dd. She’s going through a development phase/growth phase/sleep regression. She’s 14 months. I do not remember this happening with ds maybe I blocked this out from my memory but the wonder weeks app has been right so far....

TheGhostofGlumy · 07/10/2020 06:42

ememem my 14 month old has become a lot more difficult about sleep in the last couple of weeks. Although I put it down to teething as she's cut 3 in one go.
I made a start on the cupboard under the stairs and binned a few odds and ends last night. Now I just have to rearrange the bottom so I can fit a 20kg sack of tile adhesive in (leftover from bathroom 1, which we can hopefully use on bathroom 2 if we ever have the money to do it).

ememem84 · 07/10/2020 07:24

ghost I feel your pain. Xxxx

RaspberryBlonde · 07/10/2020 08:38

I've not been well this week so am very behind with the thread. Looks like you have all been busy though! Mainly just placemarking so I don't lose you all. A few bits of packaging that were hoarded in cupboards have gone plus a few other small bits of rubbish. So progress of a sort!

PickledLilly · 07/10/2020 08:41

Decluttered a very old feather pillow, it was much loved despite being a bit manky but DS managed to pee on it so it had to go!

ememem84 · 07/10/2020 08:59

pair of old fluffy socks (my faves) in the bin, as well as used up a daytime moisturiser.

also a bag of frozen berries. i use these with porridge but today have more berries than oats...

stealthninjamum · 07/10/2020 12:26

ememem84 ooh, I was going to roast some carrots but I'm going to do carrot fries which appears to be similar, and then freeze some. My dc used to really love carrots but have gone off them and I haven't stopped buying them every time I shop which is why I now have about four bags.

sandandsea thats annoying, do you remember it happened before - maybe on thread 6 or 7? (Gah, how long have I been decluttering?)

I name changed for another thread and when I changed back it removed the capital letters and now you can't see me. A couple of people close to me are on mumsnet and I don't want to out myself - especially as I'd be mortified if most people knew how messy my house used to be!

No real update here. I had a tidy, put some ornaments on my fireplace which look lovely, experimented by putting fairy lights in a bowl - that didn't look lovely. I still am lacking a big project. I am about to to take photos to sell some more toys so at least this thread is keeping me accountable. I know it's only 'one' a day but I think I said I'd be finished by xmas and that's looking less likely due to my own procastination.

I spent the time I had for tidying yesterday in DS1's room - managed to remove quite a bit of rubbish plus a number of lego boxes went into recycling and some worn out t-shirts went into the fabric recycling pile. I also have loads of outgrown pj's which are still in good condition so they will be donated somewhere I think. Also managed to get rid of a tower fan DS1 had - that had gone into the Hippobag currently on my drive.

Today I have taken some clothes bought online back to the shop for a refund and arranged for a quote for new carpet in DS2's room. Planning on seeing what I an do to tidy the living room this afternoon.

stealth if you have it try sprinkling some sesame on the carrots.

gassylady · 07/10/2020 16:49

More old paperwork shredded. I have decided that the kids clothes I was going to list on eBay are just not worth the effort of taking pics and listing. So 12 tops and trousers put into charity bag. I will still give the outgrown coats and waterproof trousers a whirl though. Another 30 or so kids books have also been declared finished with so may try those on eBay too - local charity shops not accepting books at the moment. Suppose I could sit down with a glass of something and try them on zapper etc GrinWine

stealthninjamum · 07/10/2020 18:21

@ememem84 I’ve only just seen this message, I have bags of sesame seeds! Back in lockdown I attempted to make some kind of Chinese sesame seed dip to make stir fries with. It wasn’t a success.

Anyway this is a bag of carrots turned into fries. They’re very nice

Good work everyone. The momentum is tangible!

@stealthninjamum they look absolutely gorgeous.

Day 19: started well:

  1. Bead box sorted and broken bits binned.
  2. 3 bags actually taken to charity shop having lived in the car this week.
  3. Emails kept on top of.
  4. Cuddly Hot water bottle listed on free cycle.

Then DISASTER struck. I got home to find a family member had left a well meaning bag of toys on my doorstep.
So I hid them from the toddler immediately and went through them. Within 10 minutes they were either listed on freecycle or chucked in the recycling. I've kept one jigsaw which I've deboxed and put in a zip up bag to save space.

ememem84 · 07/10/2020 19:18

Oh they look yum.

Another carrot recipe I favour is Thai carrot and peanut soup. Super easy. Carrots onion ginger peanut butter chili (lots of chili) chicken stock. Heat up. Whizz. Peanuts on top with coriander.

Also pack of cat shaped highlighters binned. They had all dried out. Sad face.

SingToTheSky · 07/10/2020 19:32

I think you’ve posted that before em and I keep meaning to try it! Does the peanut butter get added later or is it all in at once?

No decluttering here. I really need to sort the bedroom before the wardrobe arrives in a couple of weeks

Wildernesstips · 07/10/2020 19:50

@gassylady Zapper is quite good. Think that’s the one that will recycle if it can’t offer you any £.

3 eBay parcels sent today - good to see it paying dividends.

ememem84 · 07/10/2020 20:16

sing I tend to add it with everything else. I also sometimes add grated apple to make it a bit sweeter. Depending on how much chilli I’ve lobbed in. 😂

EllieQ · 07/10/2020 22:43

No outs over the past couple of days, but DH and I have decided to donate DD’s old cot to a local charity - there are a couple of places that provide baby equipment for families in need. I feel sad about it, but the cot is currently dismantled in the shed and gathering dust and cobwebs Sad

Also waiting to find out if the repair man can find a replacement part for our washing machine, or if we’ll need to get a new one.

PickledLilly · 08/10/2020 08:30

Pulled a top out of my wardrobe this morning, thought ‘I’ve not worn that in ages’ put it on, massive shapeless sack. Look at label, size 14. I’m a 10. Straight into the charity bag! No wonder I haven’t worn it in a while and I thought I’d already gone through my clothes!
