Still throwing an item away a day – part 13

StealthNinjaMum · 23/08/2020 20:13

One of mumsnet's friendliest corners this is the 13th 'one item a day' thread to inspire and motivate a group of mumsnetters to declutter their houses, gardens and lives bit by bit, one step at a time.

Each day we get rid of just one item and report back. We’ve all got different challenges and problems and it keeps us going to discuss them and work through them together.

Newbies are welcome. It’s not just decluttering, join us in the chat about recycling, organisation, grumbles about hoarding family members and obviously our many successes.

Previous thread here.

And for 2020 some of us are also aiming to get rid of 2020 items!

Hello to new and returning declutterers.
Decided today would be 'sort the freezer morning'. So many bread packets containing just desiccated crusts, similar single crumpet now in the bin and lurking chicken and a pudding out to defrost for dinner. That's 9 outs so far.
Awaiting a charity collection of some chairs but having got them out of the shed of doom some have warped and may not be suitable - will see what they say. The bookcase is fine though so not a wasted journey for them.

Good morning, I’m hoping to rejoin (again). I’ve had a real go slow over the school holidays and starting a new job but I’m hoping to kick start once schools go back. A new Salvation Army collection point has appeared at my local Tesco so I took a bag last week and I’ve got a whole stack of DVDs to go but need to scan and post them. The old school uniform bits that were decent got Freecycled.

However there are loads of boxes in the loft that were from my Mams so they will take some sorting. My husband has promised to sort out his records but I’m still waiting on that.

Anyway thanks for the new thread. Fingers crossed for being sorted by Christmas

Welikebeingcosy · 26/08/2020 09:39

Hey well done everyone! Reading all the posts makes me feel motivated to keep going. Today I intend to clear up the house after leaving it yesterday to declutter. Big job as DD is also very clingy today and I'm resolving to not let her watch as much tv today so it may be a challenge. Wish me luck!!

pollyannaperspective · 26/08/2020 10:31

Who has 31 pairs of virtually new unworn socks? DH.He is a bit 'particular' about socks - feel and colour - and these have all been disregarded for one, or both, reasons. Now collected into a bag to drop in to the collection container in the school car park.

Welcome miaowse and well done on getting rid of the sentimental items.

Everyone else is doing so well.

I am on the third day of finding homes for the clutter that was in my bedroom. Dd2 made some ‘pets’ for me with paper and as cute as they are they’re going. It’s tricky because dd2 is very creative and can endlessly write me notes and draw little pictures but there’s so many none are really special. She will hate me throwing them away so I have to hide them in the bin outside.

Flylady has told me to declutter my shoes. I did this in about March and don’t have many but I’m going to tidy them up. My shoe cupboard also has the dress up costumes so I am going to go through them too.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

So yesterday evening I got to fed up point and bundled everything I had been trying to sell into my car and took it to a charity shop. 3rd charity shop lucky would actually take it, or the majority of it at least. I've got duvet sets to drop off to a lady in need and a couple more bits and bobs to take to a charity shop warehouse but at least they are all in my car not in my house now.

I've got a really nice dress and horse showing jacket to sell on ebay. And I need to find a gigantic box to post my saddle to its buyer in, which is proving difficult to come across 🤔

Next up is some actual tidying. But I better do some work work first.

ememem84 · 26/08/2020 11:27

Made dh go up in the loft today and got all of the dcs old clothes down which I was saving for a car boot.

Have sorted a huge laundry bag for a friend who’s due on Christmas Day - all the neutral stuff.

Have a bag for nursery for spares.

Have two laundry bags for the charity ahop.

GlumyGloomer · 26/08/2020 14:57

Got my lock installed on the cupboard under the stairs, and cleaned up the tool box ready for it's new indoor home. I just dumped the contents into a bag for later sorting but at a glance there's a lot of duplication where it was easier to buy new than find what I had. Apparently I own a spirit level. Who knew? Will hopefully get to go through that stuff when the DC go to bed. Next thing to look at is the box currently under the stairs. No idea what's in that, I'll report back later...

SandAndSea · 26/08/2020 15:52

Thanks for the new thread, Stealth!

I've got 4 yucky (to me) glasses going onto the charity pile today. I've also had the car seen to so that's a job ticked off.

Since last posting, I've realised that I have a big drawer full of leggings which I hardly ever wear. It's going to take a while but I've decided to go through it, try them all on and get rid of some. Please do hold me to this. Smile

SingToTheSky · 26/08/2020 15:59

Signing in! I haven’t caught up with the old thread yet 😳 no decluttering happening here.

sparklyglitterball · 26/08/2020 17:24

Hello! I'd like to join please. Hoping to gain some de cluttering tips and inspiration, and share some too. I had a huge sort out of dd2's clothes this week and have just dropped two bin bags off to the charity shop. Next job on my list is to go through the dc's huge cupboard of games and puzzles, and sort though them/put the bits back in their boxes etc.

StealthNinjaMum · 26/08/2020 18:10

Welcome sparklyglitterball it sounds like you’ve made a great start.

I have tidied a wardrobe, organising shoes. I found a big bag of children’s shoes, some can be handed down from dd1 to dd2 but some can be donated. I finished emptying one of my two bags of clutter from my bedroom. Threw away lots of papers and found homes for everything else.

StealthNinjaMum · 26/08/2020 18:15

sparklyglitterball in terms of tips we’re all largely doing different things so it’s nice to share ideas. I’m half following fly lady at the moment so doing the rooms she tells me to. I think most of us would faint at the thought of doing a kondo but I do follow her idea of keeping identical ladies together. There’s also a website called clutterbug with good tips and we each have a clutter personality. I think I’m a ladybird. I need to serve dinner but I will try to post a link later.

Yet more holey socks in the rag bag. Two more books for the charity bag. Stealth love the idea of keeping identical ladies together 🤣 do you have a large collection??

ememem84 · 26/08/2020 20:04

Tomorrow I’m tackling toys. Eeek

Miaowse · 26/08/2020 20:18

Today’s out is a part used hand cream - I received it as a gift but really don’t like the scent.

Keiki · 26/08/2020 20:58

The house feels better already for having two less huge toys, and all the clothes bags gone. Currently emptying the tetris understairs cupboard to find the paint to touch up a few spots. Estate agents booked for valuations next week. As usual the bathroom needs cleaning and the kitchen needs tidying. Sigh.

AlexTheLittleCat · 26/08/2020 21:57

Welcome to everyone new.

Everyone is doing so well.

Stealth You are doing so well with Flylady, I keep forgetting about it! I'm going to get some DIY and other tasks done first and then go back to it. It is good for focus. I'm still watching the Secret Slob videos. I wish I had as many cupboards as her house, I wouldn't have a clutter problem then.

Keiki Good luck with the house sale.

Decluttered some old kids toys and got organised with to do list app.

PickledLilly · 26/08/2020 21:58

I have an interview to prepare for so I’m focusing on that this weekend but after that, I’m determined to go back to Ex’s house and actually sort all the stuff I didn’t sort before I left. I know there is an absolute HEAP of stuff in the attic to go through. There’s also a pile of things in the playroom at his house that need to go to the charity shop if I can find one that’s actually open.

Elenorrigbywoes · 26/08/2020 21:58

Best of luck with the valuations Keiki.
Today was bin day and I always have a burst of energy to declutter when the bins are going out! Got rid of some of the bath toys that they have outgrown and cleaned the bathroom while I did their bath.

StealthNinjaMum · 26/08/2020 23:08

gassylaey I don’t know if I typed ladies or if it was autocorrect but I meant to say identical items! It was a busy day so I was all over the place.

Thanks alexthelittlecat I’m only really aiming to do 15 minutes of Flylady but generally doing the declutter tasks she sets. Inevitably I do more than she asks but focused around the room she suggested. I forgot to mention earlier that I also found two dressup costumes and three children’s jackets that can go. The jackets are years old, dd2 pretends they still fit her but I will probably get rid of them anyway.

I didn’t actually get rid of any of my own shoes (which was Flyladys task) but the items I got rid of were in the same cupboard so it was worthwhile doing.

Well I attempted to go to the charity shop with the bag of clothes today but they have reduced their donation times. I can try again tomorrow though.

Bluewavescrashing · 27/08/2020 04:43

I'm back to decluttering after a long break. I sent 8 bras to Smalls for All the other day and have sold a train track set and kids ' dressung gown. My local charity shop is being very choosy about what they accept.

mellowww · 27/08/2020 05:24

Sounds like a dream. I need to do this ......

PurpleFrog · 27/08/2020 09:37

I am one of the regulars that has been AWOL for a little while but I am hopefully back now and checking in, ready for duty. I have kept up reading the thread but not had much to contribute myself - I have been seriously lacking in motivation. I really need to get back on the wagon. I am jealous that Stealth apparently now has a hoard of "ladies" to help her! Grin

I have looked back and my last post was 21st July. Since then I have had another trip to a recycling site 5 miles away with 3 more large bags of garden rubbish and a stack of cardboard. (Our local site is now open - at last - but only two days a week and you still have to book in advance.) I have also managed to keep our garden waste bin topped up for collections. I have gone through a number of puzzle books that still had some gaps, finished them as far as I could, and recycled. Last weekend I washed 3 jackets which are destined for the charity shop. I have other things that need to be washed before donating, so I should sort these out and aim to wash them in with my usual loads, if possible, over the next few weeks. I am surprised that people are having so much difficulty finding charity shops to take donations. I guess I was lucky in July as I donated just after a shop had re-opened. I will definitely phone ahead before trying to take anything else.

I have sold one more eBay item lately, but nothing on Facebook. I really need to have a push on the selling front. Since it is an English Bank Holiday on Monday there is bound to be an eBay selling offer on. I'm guessing it might be £1 maximum selling fees for items listed Friday to Monday (but don't blame me if it isn't!).
