Still throwing an item away a day – part 13

StealthNinjaMum · 23/08/2020 20:13

One of mumsnet's friendliest corners this is the 13th 'one item a day' thread to inspire and motivate a group of mumsnetters to declutter their houses, gardens and lives bit by bit, one step at a time.

Each day we get rid of just one item and report back. We’ve all got different challenges and problems and it keeps us going to discuss them and work through them together.

Newbies are welcome. It’s not just decluttering, join us in the chat about recycling, organisation, grumbles about hoarding family members and obviously our many successes.

Previous thread here.

And for 2020 some of us are also aiming to get rid of 2020 items!

@TheGhostofGlumy I think my issue with listing stuff is the thought of dealing with the time wasters....

stealthninjamum · 02/10/2020 15:02

Oh dear I think I need to rename myself StealthNinjaSloth. I have gone out for a coffee and had a long bath and mumsnetted and done absolutely nothing. I have about half an hour e to at least tidy the kitchen and hall and maybe put a load of washing on before I pick up dc.

pollyannaperspective that sounds so frustrating, you could maybe try to repair the slat but I have no idea if that's a big job. At least you got rid of three bits so it's some space cleared.

Only one out today - 2 cooking apples & the dregs of a pot of blackcurrants that were in the freezer. Made them into a crumble for my energy-hungry DSes.

I have been sorting out the loft, bit by bit, and found a bag of shoes which will fit DS3 now, so am taking that as a win as they are not sitting in the loft doing nothing. I'm now going to spend half an hour listing things to sell on Facebook.

ememem84 · 02/10/2020 16:44

Chest of drawers and a tv cabinet picked up by local charity shop today. Wahooooo

Also sorted a bag of toys to go to dparents for the kiddos to play with while they’re there as well as a bag of toys for charity shop and a clothes bag for charity shop too.

Binned a few bits too including another pair of trousers that Dd has bum shuffled through.

TheGhostofGlumy · 02/10/2020 17:09

@Vinorosso74 yep, people can be such a pain. I also find it hard to take photos without the toddler getting in the way.

footprintsintheslow · 02/10/2020 17:18

Day 14: I've had a toddler free day for the first time in two years so the sewing machine is out!

  1. Sorted the ribbon jar out and disposed of frayed and small bits.
  2. Sorted two giant fabric bags into four smaller more manageable sucky bags
  3. Made 4 reusable face masks.

Next job: my work shoes. Can't see many 'out' opportunities there as I love Irregular Choice shoes.

stealthninjamum · 02/10/2020 20:25

Finally did some decluttering. Five children’s books are going. I also discovered the source of the smell on my fridge. It turns out if you open feta cheese and leave it the result is pungent.

Footprints Congratulations on the toddler free day, hope you enjoyed a break.

EllieQ Glad it is getting easier. It's a long process but totally worth it.

Stealth I'm also at the next phase after several passes over the house. There is still lots more to do but getting there slowly. Nanalisa I love the wardrobe!

Outs: cardboard boxes again. They breed. I'm sure I've done something else but cannot remember! I love this thread as it keeps decluttering in my mind and is so inspiring. Need to list some baby things on ebay but keep putting it off.

ememem84 · 02/10/2020 21:08

Got rid of takeaway boxes too. Dm
Took them. Yay.

Hello can I please join in?
I did a bit on a previous thread then life got in the way yet again Sad
My out today is 2 small shower gel bottles

EllieQ · 02/10/2020 22:52

No actual outs today, but I went through a bag of DD’s old coats and got out the winter coats to try to sell on FB tomorrow. Also found another set of toddler waterproofs in there, so that can go up for sale too. Hopefully I’ll be as successful as last weekend!

IamtheOnewithSocks · 03/10/2020 07:41

Only one thing yesterday - a large box I threw away. I'd kept the box all this time in case I wanted to sell the item that came in it, but then forgot about the box and sold the item without it! Maybe for a bit less than if I'd been able to package it up, but that's ok.

Marie Kondo does say it's generally not worth keeping boxes and packaging just to sell things again later, and in my case I definitely agree with this, so I won't be holding onto packaging again.

I've got 2 bags of clothes - just need to sort out which I'm giving to a friend and the rest will go to charity. A few items I'm going to list for sale - will do this today.

stealthninjamum · 03/10/2020 09:35

I had a dream about this thread last night and in my dream I threw away a dirty baby blanket and a poster that was a map of the world. Does that count as two items? Smile

Ditched some laundry bead things today (the ones which came in the eco egg). Can’t find the egg. So no need for the beads.

Also ditched a tin for laundry storage.

pollyannaperspective · 03/10/2020 14:53

Wellies seriously impressed with a month of meal planning. Best we manage is weekly.
In an uplifting period of sunshine amidst torrential showers I have planted the last of the bulbs and pansies, including the last container at the front of the house which has been empty and on the 'to do' list for months (years really!).
So that is 10 items of packaging in to the bin (5 recycling) and 4 longstanding to do items 'ta done' this week.
I will celebrate with a cup of tea and a slice of lemon drizzle.

ememem84 · 03/10/2020 15:08

Four bags of dh’S clothes plus old hoover coffee pot gin glasses and a tin to the charity shop. Job done.

pollyannaperspective · 03/10/2020 16:56

4 more outs this afternoon - skimmed read accumulated papers and now in recycling.

Day 15:
5 pairs of shoes for charity.
1 pair of boots binned.
2 pairs of shoes listed to sell
3 handbags in charity bag
1 handbag listed to sell and sold.
1 box off knickknacks in charity bag.
1 Elefun game (which isn't that fun) listed on free cycle
1 toddler bed guard on free cycle and claimed.
7 hats and scarves in charity bag.

The hell cupboard has been sorted thoroughly and reorganised which husband got involved with and took over in the end.

I'm on a total nesting mission as due to give birth in January so desperate to streamline our lives as our house is very small.

Tonight: another jewellery sort out.
Craft boxes sort out to send some to MIL's otherwise all she can think of doing with the toddler is putting the tele on for 8 hours straight. Rant over. 🙄😤🤬

SingToTheSky · 03/10/2020 19:31

Gathered some stuff to throw away/recycle today. I’ve added decluttering to my habit tracker app in the hope of inspiring myself to do a tiny bit each day as I’ve not managed that for a few months.

EllieQ · 03/10/2020 20:35

Sounds like you’ve got loads done today @footprintsintheslow!

I have posted two things for sale on FB (waterproofs and wellies), and taken photos of a couple of winter coats and snow suits so I can post them tomorrow.

The washing machine started leaking round the seal this afternoon Shock DH has booked in a repair company to check in on Monday - we’ve used them before, so I hope they can fix it and we don’t have to declutter it!

Wildernesstips · 03/10/2020 21:49

Vile weather today so gathered up a ton of stuff and listed it on eBay. Cushion in garage for next dump run and hand cream used up. Also used a tin of caramel (best before August) in a millionaire shortbread - am assuming that it won’t kill me.

confusedofengland · 03/10/2020 23:21

Nothing out today, but hopefully sold one item I have listed on Facebook (a golf club so won't free up much room Hmm)
