Still throwing an item away a day – part 13

StealthNinjaMum · 23/08/2020 20:13

One of mumsnet's friendliest corners this is the 13th 'one item a day' thread to inspire and motivate a group of mumsnetters to declutter their houses, gardens and lives bit by bit, one step at a time.

Each day we get rid of just one item and report back. We’ve all got different challenges and problems and it keeps us going to discuss them and work through them together.

Newbies are welcome. It’s not just decluttering, join us in the chat about recycling, organisation, grumbles about hoarding family members and obviously our many successes.

Previous thread here.

And for 2020 some of us are also aiming to get rid of 2020 items!

Glad to hear you haven't actually got a jumperoo Glumy, I think in terms of space used vs usefulness they are one of the worst baby items! They are used for such a short time too.

Have binned a few pens this morning as no Ryman near us. Also did a sweep of the table in the playroom and removed a few 'artworks' into recycling. Going to attempt a charity shop drop off this morning - wish me luck!

Inspired by Flylady I bought some of these for my wardrobe

www.amazon.co.uk/HOUSE-DAY-Hangers-Clothes-Organizer/dp/B0824WJ6BB/ref=sr_1_13?dchild=1&crid=2M71PMNOZX4RT&keywords=hangers+organiser&sprefix=hangers%2Caps%2C148&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1599296080&sr=8-13

I don't think they make my wardrobe look better, in fact I have lots of dresses that just drag down now, however they do make dd2s wardrobe look better. It's easier and quicker to put things away and find them in the morning as we have a hanger for short sleeved tops, one for long sleeved tops etc. Anyway I am toying with the idea of buying some for dd1 and thought I'd share.

Thanks @StealthNinjaMum. Today someone is coming to look at our piano. My son used to play and I always thought I'd start again myself. But we live in a semi and there's nowhere to put it where the neighbours won't be forced to listen. Former neighbour came over and complained when DS was practicing for exams, which I thought was a bit rich considering the sounds of karaoke, dogs left alone whining, shouting and door-slamming that came from her side. A couple times I nearly called the police because I thought she or one of her daughters was being beaten up... but the cops were already outside! Anyway... it will free up space in the living room and if I really want to play I'll get a secondhand electronic piano.

Elenorrigbywoes · 05/09/2020 12:32

DS was playing in the playroom this morning and I spent some time going through the boxes on the shelves. I dumped lots of little plastic bits from random toys and games and some other random bits. I put a game into the charity bag - they didn't like it and it is perfect.
I have a small bag of clothes ready for the charity shop and hope to drop them in today when I am doing some shopping. I used to wait until I had a lot of bigger bags full before I dropped them off - now I use a little and often approach and it seems to be working well.

Wildernesstips · 05/09/2020 12:44

Not really done much decluttering this week, but am hoping to start again this weekend. Just came across this site that will recycle old tights though, if anyone wants to not just throw them away swedishstockings.com/pages/recycling-club.

I do have some old mobile phones to get rid of - any ideas?

gassylady · 05/09/2020 13:28

I sold two old iphones to music magpie last week. £64 for the two and they pay for postage, my old iPhone 4 was valued at £1 by phone bank and i would have had to pay for postage! That just wemt in the electronics skip at the tip unfortunately. Some charities used to take them too i think oxfam perhaps

Wildernesstips · 05/09/2020 17:16

One box of books gone to Zapper. That has cleared the last of the books to go (for now). Have located a clothing bin too, so that will be tomorrow’s job.

Wildernesstips · 05/09/2020 17:17

Thanks for the tip Gassylady, I will look there.

StealthNinjaMum clutter free by xmas would be amazing!

Is there a way to make it so that all your friends on facebook can't see what you're selling? It weirds me out that people I might have been friends with 20 years ago at uni can see all the crap from my daily life that I want to sell.

I felt awful with a cold yesterday so not much actually thrown away (1 very old bottle of nail varnish remover because I felt compelled to get rid of something and we have 3). But I did schedule 7 bundles of baby clothes due to start tomorrow. And the kids agreed to sell 2 big bulky toys to make way for more at xmas, which is a result because they are miniature hoarders in the making too.

Felt a bit better today so listed another 7 bundles of clothes and took a bag of bits to charity and gave a massive vintage lampshade frame that wasn't selling on ebay to a local craft shop. Then I sorted through the airing cupboard and have put a bag of old towels aside for my friend whose dog is having pups soon, old muslins in the decorating box and lots of toddler sheets and blankets in the charity bag. Is there a better place to take sheets and blankets? I think my local charity shop is a little overwhelmed at the mo...

Sounds as though you have done a lot today, Frogslegs14!

My day 5 update: No outs, but I’ve washed a duvet set from my mum’s house and put it away. I brought it back as the colours match DD’s room and despite being bought for me over 25 years ago, it’s still in really good condition!

Lots of stuff into the house today, though, as I did some school uniform shopping, and bought some new PJs for me and for DD. I need to go through her uniform from last year and sort out what can be donated to the school uniform shop. Oddly, I don’t feel sad about letting go of last year’s stuff - it’s more the baby stuff that I find difficult.

MsAwesomeDragon · 05/09/2020 20:24

I lost track of you all. We had a very sad out last weekend as one of our guinea pigs died suddenly, so we had to bury her 😢 Then I've been back at school this week so my school textbooks and visualiser (a webcam on legs) went back to school, so the dining table looks significantly clearer. I'm taking 2 sets of plastic drawers to school with me tomorrow, as they'll be very useful for quarantining resources between uses.

Miaowse · 05/09/2020 21:17

A few more packets of out of date food went in the bin and clearing this space meant some of the bits and pieces that were on the work surfaces could go in the cupboard.

ememem84 · 05/09/2020 22:30

Ds has a haircut today so does that count?!

Dh took him and then met his friend (dhs friend) and he (friend) bought dinosaur toys for ds and some toys for Dd. So kind.

I have thrown away two pairs of my pants. White ones which I wore last month and had a period mishap on both pairs. They were washed but aren’t as white as they once were. So binned.

Working methodically through handcreams. I put one on the bathroom one in downstairs toilet one in kitchen one on bedside cabinet and one in my bag. May also throw one in the car. I need to use them up!!!!

Miaowse · 05/09/2020 22:49

I added a pretty biscuit tin to the charity shop bag. I always keep pretty tins for storing home baking, but I don’t bake that often and when I do the treats don’t last long enough to go in a tin!

SandAndSea · 06/09/2020 00:56

Not much for me today but I have done a tip run, which always feels great afterwards. I got rid of quite a few bags of rubbish, inc 2 sacks of compostible waste and 1 large sack of rags.

The house is in a right mess now. We've had quite a few 'ins' recently and I've been building up to my 'charity friend' coming to take a load of stuff away. A big tidy-up is needed.

SandAndSea · 06/09/2020 00:59

@MsAwesomeDragon - So sorry to read that. Rest in peace, lovely guinea.

kitschplease · 06/09/2020 07:27

Out - an old and very worn pair of kid crocs.
Not out - something I put on Freecycle and that the interested person has managed not to collect 3 times in a row. So frustrating.

Today I'm going to bin some old make up but will replace that so doesn't really count. I've just realised mascara, eyeliner and eye shadow have lasted over a year and that can't be healthy 😷

StealthNinjaMum · 06/09/2020 09:26

frogslegs14 hmmm did I say clutter free by xmas? I must’ve been in a good mood drunk when I wrote that. Yes I think I would like to be tidy with everything with a home but I have some big jobs I want to do like finish the family tree (that’s on lots of pieces of paper), archive / organise my photos (film and electronic), tidy my computers and get my ancient laptop to work properly, archive my dvds onto a server, and sort out my pensions. I sort of classify those as part of decluttering because the decluttering clears my headspace and stops me procrastinating. So looking at that list maybe I was being optimistic but it’s good to set targets

msawesomedragon sorry to read about your guinea pig. Flowers

I have finished putting away the summer accessories (about 3 sunglasses and a cap that now have homes) and sorted through the winter accessories. I did a cull last year so it took no time at all. I have found 3 non matching gloves and I’m not sure whether to just give them away as rags or hold onto them. Inevitably their pair will emerge the second they’re out the door.
So flylady has moved back to the kitchen. I’ve not really been following her but I’ll try to again as it’s good to have someone tell me what to do.

Today I’m going to try to finish jobs from the last few weeks – emptying the Bag of Crap from the bedroom, filing papers I took from the hall, a bit more decluttering of the utility room. I am moving exdh’s stuff from there to the garage. I’m also re-signing up to the gym to declutter a few pounds.

PickledLilly · 06/09/2020 09:31

Out yesterday, a kids pj top that I noticed a while ago had three tiny holes in the sleeve, DS obviously found them and stuck his fingers through them turning them into three big holes so in the bin. Also vac packed my shorts into a bag this morning. I probably should have sorted them first but it’s hard to know what weight I will be by next summer so I left them as they are, at least they’re packed away.

notaflyingmonkey · 06/09/2020 09:55

I'm a newbie to this thread. We are supposed to be putting our house on the market, but it will require a major declutter which we have been putting off. DH has decided (wrongly IMHO, but there we are) to erect a gazebo in the garden, and put all the crap from the conservatory into it in order to sort it there. My worry is that it will become a permanent fixture and wanted to clear as we went instead. We shall see, I guess the trick is to keep the momentum going.

Two flannels out today. We have about a million. And these two had bleach on them so off they go to the bin.

Am getting some things ready to take back to the office tomorrow. Cannot wait to go back.

notaflyingmonkey · 06/09/2020 14:50

Thanks for the welcome @IWillWearTallGreenWellies. I think what I really need is to declutter DH, but one thing at a time I guess...

Wildernesstips · 06/09/2020 15:02

Small bag of clothes dropped in charity box.

Tidied under sink cupboard (and erected a pan organiser, which is so much better than the chaos before). Threw away some pan lids that were duplicates.

Currently going through my fabric stash. Have stuffed a load in a bag for recycling but I’m half tempted to try and sell some of the upholstery fabric remnants. But that would stall the “out”.

MsAwesomeDragon · 06/09/2020 15:55

Binned the paddling pool today. It's just about lasted the summer, but developed a hole last time we put it up, so binned. That's about all I've got the headspace for today. We're going to get 2 new baby guinea pigs tomorrow!!!!😁 So I'm sorting out the cage and bedding etc, to be ready for them to come home to.
