flies

I have flies in my flat. I only have one but as soon as I get rid of it, another one comes. I have stopped opening my windows and tonight I saw another one. I thought I saw one the other day but thought I was imagining it because my windows are kept closed which is a pity because I like fresh air coming into my place. I am now convinced that the fly I thought I saw the other day was a fly and this one tonight was the same one. Do the lurk and hide and then fly around when they want to because when I did not see it for a few days I thought oh good no more of these.

Can anyoen offer a solution. Pest control are not interested in helping me

Buy some fly spray and spray it, they die pretty quickly

Yes I do have fly spray but a friend of mine said fly spray is toxic and can cause us harm because we are also breathing the stuff in. I think it is all coming from our outside bins and my neighbours do not take care with rubbish. It is recommended that you clean and disinfect your wheelie bin etc once a month especially in the hot weather. I cannot see them doing it so I will do it but I have looked up online professional wheelie bin cleaners and they do not charge very much so I might look into that

Fly spray is not nice but then neither are flies in your food etc. Do a spray around then go out for a walk for an hour.

I have a problem this time of year as our bins are under kitchen window so have to keep that window closed. But as you say, they still find a way in!

I’m sure I read in here that a clear bag filled with water and a few coins in then sealed keeps flies away if left on the windowsill/step... Something to do with their vision perhaps?

You don't need to spray the whole room.
Just squirt a bit at the actual fly.

ElizabethMainwaring · 21/08/2020 04:18

Also spray the inside of the bins.

I wonder why UK houses do not have fly screens on the windows. This part of Canada would be unlivable without window screens.

We don't really have that many flies John.
Op said that it was just the one.
My house backs onto fields (with cows) and woods, and we aren't plagued by them by any stretch.

Hi Flute! Yes, I'm surprised we don't get that many.
I do fly spray both of our bins once week. This was following a maggot infestation in the bin.

Old school fly papers will do the trick- you'll want to change them frequently though or it might make you feel a bit squeamish!

We live in the country (Scotland) and get flies on really warm days in summer. feckin annoying but it's not that often and we love where we live!
We've tried most things but the old fashioned sticky fly papers that uncurl and you hang up are by far the best. Not great to look at, but pretty much the best way to trap the wee buggers.
