How to clean kitchen work surfaces?

Hello
I have been making bread since lockdown started (so kneading dough directly on the work surface) but I’m not sure how to clean the kitchen work surfaces so they are hygienic? Currently I use anti-bac spray and a paper towel, then wipe with another wet paper towel to get the anti-bac spray off, but no idea if that is right?
My mum used to use a white dish cloth which was bleached every few days and lived on the kitchen sink but the thought of that makes me feel a bit sick for reason.
What do other people do?

  1. It depends on the material your work surface is made from.
  2. I personally have laminate worktops and i use hot water and dish soap with a sponge after wiping with anti bacterial wet wipes to catch all the crumbs. I rinse the soapy water with just hot water and clean cloth then i dry it with another clean cloth or kitchen paper at a pinch.
I suspect wooden or marble might have different cleaning needs?

Thank you @JackPaul. I have a lot of those anti bac wet wipes but hadn’t thought of using them!

I spray and wipe and then re wipe with a damp cloth. My kitchen cloth is cotton or bamboo, hung to dry between uses, bleached daily and replaced about once a month.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 15/08/2020 13:51

I use a hot dishcloth and Method or Ecover kitchen spray or just a dab of Fairy Liquid on the cloth. I change the cloth a couple of times a week and they all get washed in a hot towels/tea towels/bedding wash.

You don't need anti bac spray, wipes or kitchen towel. Presumably you aren't chopping raw meat directly on your worktop so what are you worried about?

eddiemairswife · 15/08/2020 13:58

I just wipe surfaces with a J-cloth and washing-up liquid. I think the germs will be killed when your bread is in the oven.

Why not roll on a board that you can give a proper scrub?

Wildernesstips · 16/08/2020 19:15

I do the same as chic, but with either fairy liquid or anti bac spray if I’ve been chopping meat (on board, but splashes?). Then dry with tea towel.

Reusable cloths and tea towels get changed daily, rarely bleached and just chucked in the next wash. If you use bio laundry then you don’t need a hot wash.

Aliensrus, do you have a dough scraper for your surface - it was a revelation when I bought mine.

Nsky · 16/08/2020 19:21

I use bio d multi surface sanitiser ( eco, no bleach and co concentrate too) with microfibre cloths.
I ended bleaching clothes too with sprays.
Great stuff online it health food shops

Another recommendation for a dough scraper

InDubiousBattle · 16/08/2020 19:25

I use either washing up liquid and hot water or Method kitchen spray with a dish cloth. I usually get a fresh cloth out every day.

FinnyStory · 16/08/2020 19:30

Hot soapy water and clean cloth. Cloth changed daily.

If raw meat has been on/near the surface I change the cloth straightaway and clean it again with a fresh one, but use a dishwasher proof chopping board or plates to prepare raw meat, so it's only any splashes or spillages on the worktop.

I stopped using antibacterial sprays because they make my eyes sore, so I guess can't be doing us any good.

Susanarscott · 17/08/2020 09:17

Hey everyone!
I use a dish gel with sponge after cooking.
If I put smth on my work surface ( for example, shopping bags, they're not clean), I use extra cleaning with anti-bac spray and a kitchen towel.

minnieok · 17/08/2020 09:37

I use hot soapy water and a dishcloth, dry dishcloth between uses. I use a board for meats etc so only bread making goes straight on the work top. Done this for 20+ years and not got sick

AlwaysLatte · 17/08/2020 09:43

I use a roll out silicone mat for rolling/kneading, not directly on our worktops as they're wood. The mat can be washed in hot soapy water whereas the wood, whilst always wiped clean, does have traces of tung oil on it.

AlwaysLatte · 17/08/2020 09:46

Nb for general worktop cleaning, I use kitchen paper to clean up any mucky spills then microfibre cloth in hot soapy water. Use a clean cloth every day.

Nsky · 17/08/2020 18:53

You can of course put cloths in dishwasher too

Thecobwebsarewinning · 18/08/2020 08:29

I use a dough scraper too. If you bake a lot it’s useful for kneading and lifting any sticky dough as well as keeping the counters clean. They are also great for scraping any non-dough related crumbs and debris straight from the counter into the food waste bin.

I have granite counters and I clean them with Koh to which I add a splash of Zoflora. It doesn’t smear and buffs up well leaving them hygienic and shiny.
