Washing towels

Please tell me your secret!! My towels get scratchy very soon after buying them.... I don't know what I'm doing wrong... If I use conditioner they go funny wet like I can't get them to go completely dry and smelling musty

Is there someone there with lovely fluffy towels?? (I don't have a dryer...)

Iron them when slightly damp - that's what a friend of my told me she did to keep them soft without a tumble dryer. Definitely don't use fabric conditioner as it makes them less absorbent.

use less detergent
hang outside to dry so that they get moved about whilst drying

Half cup bicarbonate in the wash and half a cup of cheapest white vinegar in the rinse.

DramaAlpaca · 11/08/2020 02:11

I prefer my towels scratchy, they dry you better

MrsGatsby99 · 11/08/2020 07:05

Second white vinegar instead of fabric softener in the wash. But imo it's the tumble dryer that really fluffs them up so it will be difficult without that, I think?

JustaScratch · 11/08/2020 07:09

Tumble dry them. Terrible for the environment, but it makes your towels fluffy.

You must dry them as quickly as possible and keep them dry between washes as far as you can.

So dry on the line outside, or spread out on bannister/maiden/radiator inside. Give them a really hard shake after washing and shake again whilst still damp to fluff up the fibres.

And spread out to dry between each use.

Wash on a hot 60 degree+ wash every now and then with biological washing detergent. Wash weekly or more frequently in any case.

Tumble dryer I'm afraid.

I like my scratchy line dried towels but before we had a drier I did occasionally take them to the laundrette especially in winter and they are definitely fluffier.

They need to be tumble dried

If you're using powder detergent, read the ingredients and make sure it doesn't have bleach in it.

I've been drying on the line until just slightly damp and then tumbling them for a short while with tumble dryer balls. Seems to do the trick.
