What colour are they? I had some recently I thought were fruit fly but were actually fungus gnats - grow in the soil of potted plants.

Elieza · 31/07/2020 19:10

Yup, have you bought a new house plant recently or used compost to repot one that lives indoors?

They lay eggs. Then they hatch in the warm weather.

JustFrigginNameChange · 31/07/2020 19:12

I had a load of flies once when I left an onion to rot in one of my larger cupboards Confused

MrsMaryBOOface · 31/07/2020 19:12

Randomly I saw something about fungus gnats on tiktok đŸ¤£ and apparently neem oil sprayed in the soil helps

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 31/07/2020 19:13

Fungus flies. You can buy yellow sticky things to shove in the infested plant pot. They like yellow....

That will sort them.

I am fighting fruit flies although there are fewer than there were earlier in the week. They are attracted to yeasty smells so drown themselves in a shallow dish of wine with a spot of washing up liquid in (or vinegar in place of the wine). I've not managed to interest them in lager so far. They were interested in the coffee grounds so I'm having to empty the coffee machine after every use. I'm emptying the kitchen bin more often and the food recycling box is empty, washed and living outside.

Google thunder flies. We have one week every year where the fields are cut and they are everywhere. It's hideous. Literally all over the walls, inside photo frames, up your nose (or it certainly feels like it!)
Last year we literally shut all doors and windows on the hottest days of the year, cursed the wee buggers and used about 3 tins of fly spray.
The neighbours and I all hate it but it does only last a few days.
One even got under my phone screen last year đŸ¤¬

Ok I'll try all suggestions
I only have one indoor plant ( I know not on trend at all)
All fruit put away in fridge
Have bleached all bins etc
I was resigned but now they are after my wine!!!

Flying ants ! The whole area (in NW England) was literally plagued by them yesterday...the ones in the house I didn't manage to squish yesterday have all died now đŸ˜‰đŸ¦Ÿ

Knotaknitter · 31/07/2020 21:38

Give them a little saucer/jam jar lid with some vinegar and a drop of washing up liquid. Cover it with a piece of cling film with a couple of fly sized holes. They are attracted by the smell and the washing up liquid breaks the surface tension so they die.

I was sharing my wine but now they've shown that they like vinegar just as much their wine days are over.

A forgotten potato at the back of the cupboard is all it takes.

My mums just told me she had the flies too.

All she had was pots of cress from Tesco. She kept them in the fridge to chop bits out when required and binned them in the kitchen bin when done.

They seemed to be particularly around that area as well as a few all over the place.

She has no houseplants.

I think it’s safe to assume that was the source, so she will be binning directly in the outside bin in future. .
