Will I regret washing feather/down pillows when I don't have a tumble drier?

The pillow labels say 'tumble dry dry without delay'. I was quite blase and thought it's a nice hot breezy day, I can dry them resting on the washing line thing and plump them up every so often.

I'm now starting to realise this wasn't a great idea as they still have damp clumps of feathers in which obviously aren't going to dry any time soon, being trapped inside a cotton prison.

I wanted to wash them because I'm getting sneezy every morning (I have dust allergies sometimes) but with all the teeny feathers flying around every time I plump them (the cotton covering is almost furry, there are so many) I'm even worse than ever!

Anything I can do to help them dry? Might get DH to point the hairdryer at them while I 'tumble' them around?!

I have no helpful suggestions. I washed the covers by removing the feathers washing the cover then putting the feathers in and sewing them up again.

Not good. They'll probably go musty. I don't even know if launderettes are open at the moment, but if they are and you can get to one, do it before you lose all your pillows.

Mind you, they shouldn't be losing feathers either. One or two yes, but as you describe them sounds like they're made of the wrong cover material entirely.

I did it during our "heatwave" in May. I laid them on top of a jumper dryer (the one with the flat top with wires across). Had them outside and followed the direct sun plumping and turning as I moved the dryer. They are absolutely fine.

Yes, you will regret it. I washed all mine and I actually have tumble drier, it was still a massive ball ache. I'm just going to buy new next time.

I'm amazed anyone has the patience to do this - and also I wanted to wash the feathers in case of any dust mites.

They don't seem to smell (yet), they were sodden when they came out of the wash and the main outer layer dried quite quickly in the sun but obviously if they have damp clumps inside they won't dry fully for a while. I went out every hour or so to mash them up a bit.
Think I'll need to find a launderette anyway as want to wash the duvet too so should've just waited.... too late now... fingers xd... going to try the hairdryer now though.

Put them back in the machine and spin them again.

BTW i have washed synthetic pillows in the past and they've come out totally lumpy and ruined, so I'm not sure if I just have bad luck with pillows!

you might be fine.
I wash all bedding once a year and the down duvets always come out fine.
I give them one (or 2) extra spins to get as much water out as possible and then hang them up where they dry quickest (full sun or heated airer in the attic)

bluefoxmug · 22/07/2020 19:34

I give the duvets a good shake a few times when drying too.

Elouera · 22/07/2020 19:37

I washed a down duvet and just dried it in the house hanging over the door. Every so often I'd give it a shake. I think it took over 24hrs, but did eventually dry. Just put it outside again tomorrow.

gonewiththerain · 22/07/2020 19:40

Keep shaking them up every couple of hours. Do you have somewhere warm to put them overnight such as a heated towel rail? Or a friend with a tumble drier
Feather are easier to wash than manmade just keep shaking and turning. A very windy but dry few days is required for a feather duvet without a drier

Sheenais · 22/07/2020 19:43

It should be ok, but will start to smell if not dried quickly enough. I find that washing sometimes makes more little feathers come out. So if yours are already losing they may need replacing.

DH reminded me that we have a dehumidifier, so we went over them with hairdryer, put it in washing machine for another spin and they came out with wet patches on?? - I guess where the moisture had been spun outwards which is good - and they're now airing in a closed room with the dehumidifier...
