Smelly towels

Recently I've noticed that our bathroom towels smell damp even after being washed. Is there anything I can use to get them smelling nice again?

Nope. Chuck em and get new ones, but for future reference, your bathroom probably isn't getting enough ventilation. Chuck the towels over a dining chair for a couple of hours after use to let them dry.

MaddeningtheUnhelpful · 19/07/2020 23:46

I always rinse my towels first, cold water and a good helping of white vinegar. Followed by a long hot wash 60+, with scent boosters and I don't use fabric conditioner at all on my towels. My towels have stayed lovely, despite my awful windowless bathroom

Dry in the sun helps

WinWinnieTheWay · 20/07/2020 00:02

Leave them outside in a line in the rain and then let the sun dry them and then wash them in a hot wash without detergent and then on a hot wash with half the dose of detergent and an extra rinse. Do not use fabric conditioner. Line dry.

What temperature do you wash them on?

I would wash them on 60 with biological detergent, and maybe add a little dettol laundry cleanser.

ItStartedWithAKiss241 · 20/07/2020 16:02

Embarrassed to say ours were similar and this weekend I have washed them in bathes on a 90 degree wash (normal washing gel) and it’s fixed them! I was convinced they were heading for the bin x

dementedpixie · 20/07/2020 16:09

Hot wash with bio powder. Stuck some zoflora or laundry cleanser in the fabric softener bit of the machine

bluefoxmug · 20/07/2020 16:13

hot wash. at least 60 degrees
white vinegar in the softener compartment.
don't use softener

Anordinarymum · 20/07/2020 16:15

Line dry them and then tumble them. I do this.

Devlocopop · 23/07/2020 08:28

I always wash ours with Dettol laundry. They smell of the washing powder for days afterwards.

But we have dual fuel towel radiator so even in summer the towels get dried after use. The children know to fold their towel and put it on the towel radiator by a certain time as that is when it comes on.

Thank you everyone for your replies.
Our bathroom is quite small but we leave our window on the latch all day until bedtime and our fan is put on during and after showering.
I wash them on a 60 bed&bath cycle as that's the hottest cycle on my machine. I always put the towels on the line unless it's raining, unfortunately I don't have a tumble dryer. I use laundry cleanser& only recently stopped using softener as I didn't know it was bad for towels.
I will definately the white vinegar, where do I put it @MaddeningtheUnhelpful? And will try the zoflora as well.
Im going to give the washing machine a good clean as well incase that's the problem, although our other clothes are fine.

do the longest hottest wash you can at 90 with Ariel and stain remover powder like vanish.

Then get them outside on the line and leave them out for a good couple of days.

I’ve used the antibacterial laundry stuff on smelly kit towels with some success too.

Viviennemary · 24/07/2020 00:05

I second detol laundry. I read about it ages ago on MN.

Sunnysidegold · 24/07/2020 09:10

Put the vinegar in where your softener goes in the drawer.

thisstooshallpass · 26/07/2020 22:23

Definitely distilled white vinegar instead of softner. Squeaky clean.
