Best way to keep shower screen free of limescale

ILoveJoeBrown · 17/07/2020 09:24

DH has just finished installing a new shower cubicle after years of not being able to see through the last one as it was so heavily scaled.

What's the best way to keep it looking sparkly and new? White vinegar; wipe down every use with a squeegee; rinse with cold water before you get out;...?

I should add that we live in a very hard water area and have a water softener, though that never seemed to help with the previous shower!

Viakal

TenCornMaidens · 17/07/2020 12:09

Rain ex - you can get it from wilko or other places. Follow the instructions carefully and it should work to make the water bead up and roll off.

Method shower cleaner, I have tried everything and this really works, but I now wipe down after each shower

theneverendinglaundry · 17/07/2020 19:44

I always use a shower spray - method is lovely but expensive. I only buy when on offer. The Astonish and Ocado ones work well.

borntobequiet · 17/07/2020 19:46

Wipe down after use. You can use a squeegee but a soft absorbent cloth will do. Use some sort of product weekly.
Has worked for me for decades (very hard water).

I have a spray bottle filled with 1 part white vinegar to 2 parts water. I spray the screen and squeegee it after every shower. If it starts getting cloudy I give it a good spray with Viakal or similar and give it a good clean. That doesn't need doing too often so long as the vinegar spray is used regularly

RandomMess · 17/07/2020 19:54

Get a water softener! Life changing...

0blio · 17/07/2020 19:57

Dry after every use. I'm in a very hard water area and never have to descale the shower screens if I keep them dry.

However I would love to have a shower that doesn't need me to use a flipping cotton bud to clean out all the gunk from the door grooves!

eatthepineapple · 17/07/2020 20:03

Expensive option but we were given one of those karcher suction wiper things and just use it after every shower. It's really good!

A window cleaner squeegee

Move north

YoyoRiot · 17/07/2020 20:15

Water softener

YoyoRiot · 17/07/2020 20:15

Sorry just seen you have that already.

White wine vinegar works for us

SamsMumsCateracts · 17/07/2020 20:17

We had a new walk in shower installed four years ago and it still looks as it did when it was new, despite daily use. We spray shower cleaner, the type that you don't rinse, on the glass, floor and cubby holes after each use and squeegeeing the whole thing. It can be annoying at times, but it looks lovely.

SamsMumsCateracts · 17/07/2020 20:18

Squeegee, not squeegeeing!

VallarMorghulis · 17/07/2020 20:42

Squeegee and shower spray

misstiggiwinkle · 17/07/2020 20:45

Viakal

Flamingolingo · 17/07/2020 20:55

Is the softener calibrated properly? And are you topping it up with salt. Ours made a huge difference

RandomMess · 17/07/2020 21:04

Something is wrong with your water softener!!!

Either the hot/cold feed to the shower doesn't go through the water softener or the water softener is not working...

mommybear1 · 17/07/2020 21:28

Agree with @borntobewild wipe down after every use and use a product once a week. I used a Karcher but no real difference to a squeegy- I live in another v hard water area Shock

borntobequiet · 17/07/2020 21:45

Aah - wish I was borntobewild.
Maybe a name change is in order!

AlphaDalpha · 17/07/2020 21:53

Wipe the water off with a rubber scraper thingy, then dry with microfibre cloth and use Cif every few months.

Franticbutterfly · 18/07/2020 00:51

After every shower I squeegy, then spray with the Astonish shower spray. Then once or twice a week I spray the screen with limelight or cillit bang limescale remover (not viakal as it's blue and it can stain grout) and scrub a bit.

HolyCorona · 18/07/2020 09:22

Move north Grin

ILoveJoeBrown · 19/07/2020 20:04

ooh lots of good advice, thank you! I like the 'move north' one - I was brought up in Glasgow, where the water is as soft as silk! Why did I ever move...?
