What is this stain on my shower tray?

It cannot be limescale because we have a water softener and no limescale anywhere in the house. Except in this bathroom. Where the shower tray is developing these greenish stains (in some places they feel crusty, just like limescale), there is a bluet-green encrustation around the spout of one tap (But not other, and neither drips), and now the toilet bowl is also getting getting greenish streaks.

I've just tried Kilrock gel on the shower tray, and it didn't have any effect whatsoever.

What's going on? What is it? An how can I get rid of it?

To me it looks like the shower tray is a build up of body fats and soap scum.
The tap looks like a combination of limescale and possibly a coating on the tap allowing the base metal to react with the water.
The toilet look like a build up of toilet cleaner.
For me the solution would be improved cleaning regime and possible replacement of the tap.

I also thought it was scum at first, but I've cleaned it with detergent and a steamer, and I cannot get it off. I don't mean that I only cleaned it with the steamer once it got to this state. I regularly use a steamer for cleaning as i have allergies that mean I cannot use many household cleaning fluids. So it's also not a build up of toilet cleaner, because I rarely use it. I generally use just bleach, scrubbing brush and steamer. None of the other toilets in the house have these markings on them. I've bought toilet cleaner to try and get the marks off this loo, but it has no effect on them.

Blue-green is copper.

Oldestchild90s · 16/07/2020 23:48

I had that, someone suggested i used a 2p coin to get it off. Was amazed that it worked!! Give it a try!

I’ll remember that tip!! Brilliant idea and easy to try.
For it to be copper - do you have any copper pipes OP? If so, I’ve no idea how you would stop it... as surely that would mean something is eroding the pipework. ...

The change in pH of the water to slightly acidic, rather than alkaline, as a result of fitting the softener.

Limescale forms in alkaline conditions. Copper deposits form in acidic ones.

You might be able to adjust your softener, depending upon the model.

I expect that the majority of the piping throughout the house is copper. But why is it affecting only this bathroom?

Is the tuppence trick about the abrasion of a piece of metal, or is it chemistry?

Older pipes compared to the others? It's left wet for longer?

Got no idea about the coins. But they have changed the metals that make them up over the years, so if it does still work, I'd guess that it's abrasion rather than chemistry.

Thank you. - that explains the OP situation. Everyday is a school day!!
(I do love to know the ‘why’ behind scientific stuff)

I found this article about higher acidity causing copper to leach out of the pipes. Interesting stuff. Thanks for putting me onto it. I've got some pool testing strips which test pH in increments of

A magic sponge gets the copper stain off in our bathroom! I just keep one in the cupboard to attack it when I notice!
