How often changing items?

Hello,
I started thinking whether I am not changing my items, such as Towels, kitchen towels, bedding maybe even curtains often enough? Oh and the cushions.. I might think of more.
I am attached to staff and was decluttering a bit when I realised I had bedding from ten year ago, my towels were actually 8 years old.kitchen towels up to 5 years old. Curtains are now 6 years old.
I donated bedding and towels, they are in absolutely great condition...
I like to save money, thinking of investment rather than new bedding every year.
How often do you change such things? If they are clean and not damaged I don't really see a point of getting new ones.

Just to add - I purposefully buy vintage curtains and bedding (because I'm a hipster wanker) so some of our stuff is older than me!

@copperoliver

My sister told me you need to change bedding and towels every two years as they don't get cleaned properly after that period some bacteria stays on them or something. She read an article somewhere. So I change mind every 2 years unless they look washed out before. X
Just give them the occasional 60 degree wash to kill bacteria. The occasional hot wash is cheaper than replacing everything.

Do people really buy new bedding/towels etc. every year?

I’ve heard it all now.

I thought it was bad enough when I read that kitchens need replacing after 5 years, otherwise they’re ‘old fashioned’. Shock

No wonder the planet’s in such a mess!

When they are tatty.
My towels have rips in and I still use them. They're at least 20 years old. My duvet set is 10 years old and has at least another 10 to go.

The dc's have nice monogrammed towels Hmm.

@PlanDeRaccordement you must have more time than me, I like to be able to change the bed without having to turn laundry around in an hour or so!

We have 2 sets of bedding per bed, I thought this was standard 🤷🏼‍♀️.
We only change when we need to, I’ve towels which are years old and bedding too. I’d rather save my money for nicer things! But then I hate spending money on towels- seems such a waste 🤣

You've answered your own question: "they're in absolutely great condition". You said you donated them, so what makes you think they are ok for someone else to use but not you?

maverickallthetime · 08/07/2020 07:59

@megletthesecond I ended up having to buy more towels when the DC complained that their towels were too small, they like huge bath sheets.

JaJaDingDong · 08/07/2020 08:07

I'm using towels I had to go to university. I'm 60.
I wouldn't give them to guests, but they are perfectly serviceable as towels still.

We're heading for an environmental crisis. Don't buy new stuff until the old wears out.

Veterinari · 08/07/2020 08:33

I have towels that are nearly 20 years old, I've just replaced bedding that was 10 years old (a couple of holes and some rust stains). I buy fairly neutral stuff that I like so it lasts for ages

TheClitterati · 08/07/2020 08:42

I'm wrapped in a bath sheet I bought in JL in 1997.

All my curtains are either vintage, 2nd hand or home made. I'd replace them if the decor changed radically perhaps.

Sheets/towels etc I've just been marvelling how long things last. I have a wonderful height thread count fitted sheet I got on sale that is 13 years old.

It's a hugely wasted frivolous idea to change things every x years, just because the items are "old".
