When do you do your 'deep clean'?

Hello,

Just out of curiosity really, when do you do your deep clean (i.e. cleaning the kitchen throughout, bathroom, hoovering through/hoovering stairs, dusting, polishing, cleaning bedrooms etc etc.

Not just the everyday cleaning like cleaning benches down, sinks and popping a bit of bleach down the toilet..

At the moment I usually do everything on a Saturday whilst my DP takes DS out for a couple hours, DS is nearly 2 and I have tried doing the bathroom during bath time but he still needs supervision at all times and has learnt how to climb out the bath so I cant really juggle the two safely.

Just wandered when you do it, how you manage it and if there's anything I could do differently to manage the time better Grin

Have you tried the organised mum method? I’m clearly not organised, we spent several hours this weekend doing the whole house top to botton, I would love to do TOMM and keep on top of it but never seem to manage.

Very rarely, especially at the moment and I don't even have a toddler getting under my feet. If you're managing to get all of those jobs done once a week then I'd say you're already managing your time really well Smile.

CherryPavlova · 30/06/2020 08:58

The cleaners usually did Monday and Friday but they’re not coming at the moment so we do the cleaning on a Friday or Saturday morning.
I wouldn’t call that a deep clean though. What you describe I call cleaning.

A deep clean is usually a room at a time. Moving furniture, skirting boards, windows, furniture either polished or hoovered, curtains cleaned, cupboards emptied and cleaned/sorted etc. That’s about once a year. More often for sitting rooms and kitchen than bedrooms that are mainly empty.

RunningAwayFund · 03/07/2020 01:27

I wander round with a damp cloth to dust the skirting boards and doors every month or two, try to declutter every season, and shampoo the carpets every 6 months. Apart from the standard weekly clean of the house, the kitchen is the only room that has jobs on a different time scale to weekly:

Daily:
Wipe down surfaces, whip round with cordless hoover.
Total time: 5 minutes

Weekly:
Mop.
Check fridge for out of date stuff and wipe it down.
Wipe down kettle and toaster, empty crumb tray.
Clean microwave.
Wipe down the top of the extractor fan.
Empty all the cutlery into the dishwasher and wipe out the cutlery drawer.
Wipe down oven racks.
Total time: 20 - 30 minutes

Monthly:
Descale the kettle and iron.
Run empty dishwasher and washing machine on cleaning cycles.
Empty one cupboard and one drawer, clean the inside and check expiry dates on things before putting it all back (means everything gets a once over every 4 months and saves having to do it all in one go).
Total time: 30ish minutes

3 monthly (ish)
Wipe down the outside of the kitchen cupboards with soapy water (always shocked at how gross the outside is and vow to do it monthly, but I never do Blush)
Total time: 15 minutes

6 monthly:
Clean inside of oven
Total time: don't know, boyfriend does it Grin

@RunningAwayFund That's impressive 👍

Franticbutterfly · 04/07/2020 01:47

Daily: clean all 3 Loos and sinks. Clean the kids' bathroom mirror. Make beds, tidy round my bedroom, empty and fill dishwasher several times, wipe down kitchen several times. Do washing and drying. Set eufy going around downstairs. Squeegy the shower and spray with shower spray. Clean hob.

Every other day/or third day: I hoover the main areas with the Henry or the upright, do the stairs and my bedroom including all skirtings and behind my bed. I also mop hard floors. Polish/dust (especially my mirrored dressing table as it looks grubby after a day or so). Clean the cooker extractor hood. Wipe the breakfast bar stools.

Each week, I clean all the windows and sils, wipe all cupboards down, clean all appliances, scrub down all shower screen, wipe all switches, wipe all the doors, clean out the breadbin and toaster, wipe the microwave inside and out.

userxx · 04/07/2020 07:37

@Franticbutterfly Jesus Christ, how the hell do you find the time to do all that!!! That's some serious cleaning regime.

Franticbutterfly · 04/07/2020 07:48

@userxx I don't have a job (cheers Covid 😩😂) and I only worked pt before. Also I'm really motivated as I used to live in a house that was a total dump (think Victorian with mould everywhere) so since we've managed to buy our own house and renovate it I'm really keen to keep it nice despite the fact that my DH and 3 DC are the messiest people in the world.

MinnieMousse · 04/07/2020 07:53

Er, never! I work ft and have two young DC so to be honest I'm pleased if I just manage the basic stuff. Every so often I think cupboard looks dirty so I'll clean it out or I'll notice a grubby skirting board so I'll clean it but I never have a day of just cleaning the whole house.

DonLewis · 04/07/2020 07:58

It's difficult with a toddler. I also found that with a toddler came early waking and shit loads of toys. All three together are not conducive to deep cleaning!

I tend to do what I do every week and then throw a couple of extra jobs in. So, this week I've emptied and cleaned the kitchen cupboards alongside the regular stiff like bathroom, vacuuming, wiping round. Next week it'll be all the windows inside. And so on. In December I do everything in one go over the course of 3 days or so and once again, usually at the start of the six week holidays.

userxx · 04/07/2020 07:59

@Franticbutterfly Fair enough, please can you send some of your motivation my way 😏. I think I need to draw up a plan of action!

ritzbiscuits · 04/07/2020 08:06

Work Mon - Thurs, so tend to tidy up on a Friday, get a bit of hoovering done with the robot hoover.

Nothing on a Saturday.

I dust on a Sunday am but not always every week. Most Sunday evenings I put the robot hoover on downstairs then mop from the back room to the front door (while DH does bath and bed)

Kitchen and bathroom deep cleaning are DH job. He does that once every few weeks and obviously we do a lot of daily cleaning in these areas.

Will also use our big Sebo vac on carpets in bedrooms/stairs periodically.

Along with general daily tidying and wiping up, that works for us and isn't too time consuming.

GotOutOfBedOnTheWrongSide · 04/07/2020 08:09

Daily:

  • Make beds
  • Vaccume downstairs (always seems to be
bits everywhere)
  • Wash up a million times
  • Kitchen worktop
  • Clean toddler prints of huge living room
window
  • Do laundry

Every 2/3 days:

  • Clean bathroom (tiles, shower screen,
bath, sink ,toilet, etc)
  • Dust all furniture
  • Vaccume upstairs
  • Vaccume the stairs

Weekly:

  • Wash bed covers
  • Wash sofa cushions
  • Wipe kitchen cupboards
  • Wipe fridge and get rid of out of date stuff
Ready for weekly shop.
pigeon999 · 04/07/2020 08:17

A deep clean for me means:

Carpets all washed
Curtains stream cleaned and washed, pressed
Inside windows
All cupboards cleaned inside and out - tidied
Oven clean
All duvets washed and pillows
Mattresses cleaned and turned
All furniture pulled out and cleaned
Washing machine deep clean/dishwasher etc
Clear out of clothes and toys and ill fitting shoes
Deep grout clean of bathrooms and kitchens
Walls washed down and redecorating areas

I follow this pattern seasonally. Spring/summer/ autumn/winter and christmas.

Wannabegreenfingers · 04/07/2020 08:19

Thursday night for me, clean kids bathroom, my ensuite, downstairs loo. Mop kitchen and hall and hoover the rest of the house. Wipe down of surfaces with a damp cloth (dusting). Not every week, but about once a month (ish) skirting & windows. Oven about once a quarter, beds every two weeks, kids aren't sweaty and I'm single.

I only ckean out the kitchen cupboards, draws etc once in a blue moon. I believe my house is clean and tidy, I'm regularly told so by friends I'm just not fastidious.

It really isn't all consuming and probably takes around 2 hours a week at the most.

fartyface · 04/07/2020 08:20

Spring. Occasionally another time in the year.

dementedma · 04/07/2020 08:38

I have to leave this thread in shame at the level of cleaning I do compared to some of these posters! Bloody hell, I dont know whether to be impressed or horrified at the time and effort people are putting in.

pigeon999 · 04/07/2020 08:45

I love a clean house, and if you break up the jobs over for a few days it really doesn't take long. I enjoy it, the ringing in of a new season and a fresh house. I make the most effort at christmas.

scrivette · 04/07/2020 08:46

Never have a big deep clean like that. If I notice something needs doing I do it.

I bleach the loos and clean the floor around it once a week as no one seems to aim well in our house.

When the little ones are in the bath I tend to clean the bathroom.

0blio · 05/07/2020 12:54

Me too @dementedma

My children are grown up now and there are only two adults in my house and we both work so it doesn't get dirty or untidy really. I used to have a cleaning routine but I now just clean when I need to. It's hard to get motivated and off the sofa sometimes though.

anothermansmother · 05/07/2020 15:57

Deep clean about once every 6 weeks, going from top to bottom including windows skirtings, washing down walls, washing everything and generally decluttering as I go.

Daily I hoover and do a quick wipe around.

LovingLen · 06/07/2020 07:36

Usually only when we decorate
