Any point in 'colours' washing powder?

I currently have 3 types of washing powder on my washing machine and it looks cluttered.
Aldi colours bio powder - in the hope of preventing wash fade to clothes. My DC wear a lot of brightly coloured clothes and I'm trying to prevent them fading too quickly.

Aldi bio (regular) - clothes, towels, bed sheets etc.

Ariel - for the nappies.

The Ariel has to stay, I've tried so many for the nappies, and this is the best.

Is there any point in colours washing powder? Does it make a difference? Will they just fade anyway?

TIA

I would also like to know

dementedpixie · 28/06/2020 20:47

I think they fade over time anyway tbh. I just use surf powder for most things and a sports wash liquid for smelly sports stuff

the colours powder doesn't contain bleaches which is why its supposed to keep coloured clothing bright. Ordinary powders do contain bleaches and can fade clothing a bit faster

I use fairy or Persil ( whichever is cheaper when I need it) liquid on my colours. Can’t say I notice fading. Likewise I use Halo sports wash for workout clothes and will toss any other coloureds in to make a loaf, and again, no issues.
I use non bio powder for whites. Bio doesn’t suit my skin and I do think it’s harsher but I’m open to being told I am wrong.

The ‘colour’ products don’t have the optical brighteners in that ‘white’ products do so the colour looks truer. If you’ve washed colour clothes in Persil white for instance, you can revive the fade colours by using a colour product.

Yes. Because the ordinary powders have a bit of bleaching agent in them.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 28/06/2020 20:59

I just use Ariel for everything now. I know about bleaching agents and fading, but tbh I've never really noticed a problem with fading etc except when something is really old. I have limited space too, and having multiple boxes is just too much faff.

Actually DS had some trousers with a bit that zipped off to convert to shorts - I found the zip off bit years after we bought them and the shorts had faded, but the shorts alone still looked fine and bright enough.

Thanks everyone. I shall stick with it and just find some other way of storing it to look less cluttered...

Liquid detergents don't contain bleaches either so they could be used instead of a big box of powder

nancybotwinbloom · 28/06/2020 21:08

Powders

Contain enzymes to remove stains.
Contain bleach

Non bio
Do not contain enzymes to remove stains.
Usually for sensitive skins
Contain bleach

Colour
Usually are bio but contain no bleach

Liquids:

Same as above but contain no bleach

nancybotwinbloom · 28/06/2020 21:09

Sorry top description is bio powders

lljkk · 28/06/2020 21:19

Our colours keep hugely better since we switched 2 mostly using colour deterg. Is our main deterg used for almost everything.

I think it’s worth persisting with all three. They each have their purpose. I put mine in a basket on the counter just to make it look a bit neater.

Incidentally, I also used to use Halo for smelly sports gear but recently discovered that if I add a little (about half a cap) Zoflora to the washing liquid it works just as well as the Halo but much cheaper. I also put a little bit In the fabric softener compartment (but no fabric softener, I hate that stuff) for most washes. The Linen Fresh scent makes things smell line dried even after tumble drying them.

I keep all 3 ( I have a shelving unit in the little laundry room )

Boxed : Colour / Bio / Non Bio powders
Liquid Non Bio for delicates
Wool Wash

I do prefer powders for day-to-day .
Never use liquitabs

Mine are either Sains/Waitrose/Tesco own brand
