Goose down duvet

I'm looking to buy an all season, goose down duvet. Can anyone recommend a good brand? The filling in my current, synthetic one, has bunched up in the corners of the stitched pockets leaving large, bald patches and is quite useless. I thought I'd upgrade this time round but am worried about making a costly mistake.

I would be worried about the cruelty involved even in those labelled cruelty free - some research put me off the idea. Also, the cleaning - my daughter had a feather duvet that seemed to take months to dry. We have one from Soak&Sleep - the soft as down one which is the best duvet we've every had. Haven't washed it yet though.

Yes the ethics of feather and down - some of the issues behind the harvesting of down are grim.

I've been idly looking at the Ikea Lyocell ones .
I will need to see them IRL (so a trip to Ikea is in order) I want one that has the filling sewn into squares rather than long rectangles , it keeps in place better .

At the moment we have a 4.5tog and use brushed cotton bedding in winter .

I have to plead ignorance to the cruelty issues I hadn't considered it but will take a look. The synthetic one I have has stitched pockets but the filling has all bunched up in the corners, it worse than previous, tube type ones.

Can you wash the duvet then tumble dry with a couple of tennis balls ?
It helps to pummel the filling and fluff it (helps with drying too)

Years ago I bought WashBalls** - 9 hard plastic balls about ping-pong balls sized - for the WM and some dryer balls that were bigger , and had blunt spikes for the dryer .

They are a bit noisy but do the job.

** I don't have the WashBalls now , my DS used to grab one in each hand and thunder round when he was crawling (he's 20 now so doesn't tend to do that sort of thing Grin )

Thanks, I'll give it a go, it's worth a try.

Try a wool duvet. I am a convert to them. They are not as soft and fluffy as down but they are great at regulating temperature overnight.

I bought a Baavet wool duvet about 18 months ago and it's brilliant. I got rid of my goose down one because it all bunched in the pockets.
I'm going to get another Baavet for the spare bed

BoreOfWhabylon · 28/06/2020 19:57

I'm another who won't buy goose down because of the cruelty involved.

I have a silk filled duvet from Soak and Sleep, which is heaven - cool in summer, warm in winter. It's pretty old now though and I'm thinking of relegating it to the spare room and replacing with a wool one.

Wool? Well, thats a relevation, I'll take a look thanks, I hadn't thought of that.

I have a wool duvet from greenfibres. It's amazing. Would very much recommend. It's temperature regulating and breathable. I have a medium weight. Good all year round except on super hot nights when I just have a sheet. On very cold winter nights I add a bedspread.

MiniMum97 · 02/07/2020 01:37

If you go for wool make sure you don't get one with a polypropylene lining (such as fogarty). These will usually allow you to machine wash or tumble dry your duvet.

The issue with a polypropylene lining is that the duvet will be noisy and it completely negate the temperature regulation as you are essentially lining the wool with plastic so it can't regulate or be breathable

Another duvet recommendation is baavet. They have a bargain bin if money is an issue. Got my sons duvet from the bargain bin. Absolutely nothing wrong with it.

That's a handy thing to know, thanks MiniMum97

Hi, I've just popped for your adviceback to say thanks to all for your advice. I've bought a light weight baavet today. I thought I'd give the summer one a try & then purchase a winter one if I like it. I'd never have thought wool but now I can't wait to try it out, so thanks again everyone.

Just seen the update. Thanks OP. I hope you're enjoying your Baavet. I love mine.
