Idiot's guide to bed headboards?

DH and I have a bed that is made up of two separate base units side by side, then one kingsize mattress over the top. Our previous bed was an ordinary kingsize with those fabric loops you can slot the struts of a headboard into, but this one doesn't have them. I've been trying to research headboard options and ended up very confused! I definitely don't want one that just stands on the floor between bed and wall and doesn't attach to anything. Can you attach a headboard to a bed like ours even without the loops? Or can you get wall mounted ones? I was hoping to buy from John Lewis but their descriptions all seem to talk about attaching to the bed and most have those wooden struts. Links for suggestions would be particularly helpful as I am bewildered after too much googling...

I've never had one with fabric loops - they have all had a round plastic 'donut which screws into the bed and holds the headboard on with the wooden struts.

Is it a divan bed? They usually have something at the back to slot the headboard into. Maybe a silly question. But do you have the base of the bed facing the right way? Have you checked all four sides incase maybe it is round the wrong way. You probably have, but it was just the first thing that popped into my head

The bed is a European make one that you can't get in the UK, and their own-brand headboards are ludicrously £££ and are all free-standing, which is what made me worry that we wouldn't be able to attach one directly as they don't seem to be intended for it. I don't think we have missed anything on it that you could slot them into, no. But maybe we can screw one in after all, if what Chasingsquirrels says is correct! Do you literally just screw straight into the wood/fabric of the base unit? Do you think it would matter that the base unit on ours is made up of 2 separate bits? Thank you for the advice, feeling particularly clueless right now and don't want to make an expensive mistake...

The base would already have the screwed in part, not something that you would do yourself. If you get a free standing one you could fix it to the wall

They look like this, but I'd agree that the bed come with the holes pre-drilled.

Our divans came with stickers to show where the holes drilled for the headboard were. You may be able to feel the holes through the fabric.
