Marigolds/rubber gloves in the washing machine?

Just wondering what's the worst that can happen if I put a pair of rubber washing up gloves in the washing machine? (I'm particularly concerned about the machine!) Google is being surprisingly quiet on the subject, which leads me to think it's not a common thing to do, but I'm still tempted to give it a go. Would be grateful for your thoughts and experience! I'm not sure why you would do this? Can you not just wash them with soap while you are wearing them?

Fwiw, once I've got water inside of rubber gloves I've not managed to get it out and they go mouldy.

7ofNine · 30/05/2020 12:07

Won't they melt/thin the rubber?
On a cold wash would be ok, but what would be the purpose of that?

Btw, I just turn them inside out if they're wet inside and they dry off in no time. No mould.

MumpsimusMaximus · 30/05/2020 12:11

Mine have got wet inside loads of times and I just turn them inside out, dry them with a teatowel and leave them to dry completely in the air. You could peg them inside out on the line I suppose.

I’m baffled as to why this isn’t obvious 😏

The reason I'm looking to do this is because they're currently covered in an extremely sticky oily substance which isn't coming off with Fairy Liquid. Washing machine is the last attempt to save them. Nothing to do with them getting wet inside.

the sticky substance is probably the rubber disintegrating. time for new ones.

When mine get wet inside I poke them onto a broom handle, so drying upright with some air inside.

Rubber gloves are cheaper than a washing machine.

In a bowl, whisk some hot water, washing powder and a scoop of soda crystals. Leave gloves soaking for half an hour. Rinse and dry. If no good, throw away and replace.

bin them or risk wrecking your machine

I've actually done this a lot, but then I have a talent for washing weird and wonderful things, even successfully machine washed timberland boots in the machine (on a wool wash mind). But my machine is an old Bosch one that was made before they went shit, so is built like a tank.

The "heavy duty" ones (the black ones) have always been fine, the standard yellow or pink ones have been fine IF they are a good quality one if memory serves., however I usually use the black ones.

Saying all this though, I suppose putting anything but Fabric in the machine is going to be a risk, so if you can't risk the machine for the sake of rubber gloves which cost around £5 then I wouldn't.

Me I'd get new Marigolds rather than risk the sticky oil and any disintegrating gloves in the machine.
