Pretty sure mum will eat or kill her babies if you touch them

Choctimeout · 28/05/2020 18:56

Sorry, that’s meant to be never bit and she waited until they were weaned before separating them.

Lorddenning1 · 28/05/2020 19:00

I didn't even know u could keep wild mice as pets, we are getting a cat but next year as we are having some major building work so didn't think it was fair to get a cat yet

IHateCoronavirus · 28/05/2020 19:08

Would you like to borrow my cat?

Lorddenning1 · 28/05/2020 19:15

@IHateCoronavirus aw ur cat is lovely, would love to tickle his tummy 😊 we lost our cat last and we will get another but not right now

OP posts:
IHateCoronavirus · 28/05/2020 19:17

She would gladly accept a tickle for the price of a cardboard box. Wink

Wereeaglesdare · 28/05/2020 19:17

Please don't kill them. They are brand new little lives just take care not to touch them directly put gloves on and use a humane trap. I don't believe that a mouse wouldn't be able to find food out in the wild. She will be back for her babies is there anyway you could put them in the trap. Makes me sad to think they will die because of what people perceive as pests and vermin. You know in places like india rodents are worshipped. They have feasts for rats!

IHateCoronavirus · 28/05/2020 19:18

She just glares at us in a threatening manner unless boxes are involved!

Lorddenning1 · 28/05/2020 19:22

@IHateCoronavirus aw she is so cute, I said him as I took a guess. We have only had boys cats, what are girl cats like?

Lorddenning1 · 28/05/2020 19:24

@Wereeaglesdare I agree and would love to take care of them as I love animals, but on the other hand we have 3 small children and can't risk germs they bring. We need to bring a pest controller in so they can see if there are anymore and how they are getting in, I can't risk leaving them and trying to catch them myself with all the germs they bring

caringcarer · 28/05/2020 19:24

Catch them and take them to a field where they can go in the hedgerow. Make sure Mum is with them. leave them some food such as porridge oats to get them started. Then go scrub out your drawer.

gamerchick · 28/05/2020 19:26

Get a humane trap and pop a little bit of peanut butter in it. When you catch mum take the draw to a safe space outside pop the babies down with some of the draw contents if you're going to get rid of it anyway and then release mum

Yeah do that, then they'll die a worse death than just dispatching them.

Put them in a box, stick them in the freezer. Job done. Fine someone with a snake who takes pinkys and you're set.

Soubriquet · 28/05/2020 19:26

Awww little pinkies

I love mice but I wouldn’t want one in the house

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 28/05/2020 19:27

Field mice are not the same as house mice. The clue is in the name.

Soubriquet · 28/05/2020 19:29

I went to animal college and the animal technician would pop pinkies in the fridge if she found unexpected babies.

These were then fed to snakes

IHateCoronavirus · 28/05/2020 19:29

She has DH where she wants him! Grin She is loving, but on her terms. Definitely not the lap cat I dreamt of!

The vet said it is the Bengal in her that makes her wild but we adore her. We have a builder’s yard behind us and despite her tiny size she often kills massive rats and brings them over the fence. Sad

Luckily she never bothers with birds etc.

lemmathelemmin · 28/05/2020 19:29

Yes, to freezing them and feeding them to snakes. Make good use of the meat

Lorddenning1 · 28/05/2020 19:31

I have decided I don't want to get involved in their outcome as it would just upset me, my OH is the total opposite to me, as long as they are gone and out of my house, he will speak to the pest controller tomorrow.

highmarkingsnowbile · 28/05/2020 19:32

Get a cat. They're vermin and have been using your drawer and bedding as a loo. Get rid of them. Their droppings can carry hantavirus and a load of other stuff. If you've found these, there will be more. A cat is the best way to keep them out. We were infested as we live with a forest out back. Tried everything. Only the cat worked.

MrsOfBebbanburg · 28/05/2020 19:33

Freeze them?? Shock

Lorddenning1 · 28/05/2020 19:33

@IHateCoronavirus aw my last cat was a proper mummies boy and loved cuddles, he has wobbly cat syndrome so he couldn't hunt, he did bring me a big scary leaf one time, he is my boy

Lorddenning1 Ah sooo cute! I love that he saved from the leaf!

StuffYouAllInTheCrust · 28/05/2020 19:38

Try contacting a local wildlife hospital/sanctuary. You’ll be surprised at the animals they’ll take in.

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 28/05/2020 19:53

Why wouldn't you just kill them
Cos she's not a fucking monster Angry

Thank you @Choctimeout, reading this thread I was beginning to despair. I'm glad there are a few compassionate people around. Why can't everyone be like your mum? Sad

I don't believe that a mouse wouldn't be able to find food out in the wild
I agree, how the hell does anyone know? I think it's just something people say so they can 'dispatch' them or put them in the freezer!

Op, please don't turn a blind eye and let them be killed, you know they are there. At least try and do as Stuff says and try a wildlife sanctuary or just put them in a field to take their chances.

Dyrne · 28/05/2020 20:37

OP if you use live traps please read some guidance on them before making the decision - “not killed” does not automatically equal “humane” and could actually make the mouse suffer more:

Also note the concerns raised about the ability of the house mice to survive in the wild.
