Yellow grout

Our bathroom is an 80s floor to ceiling pink tiled design. The grouting's yellow in places, grey in others, but white pretty much nowhere despite being the original colour. We're renting so have to live with the tiles, but it's doing my head in that they never look clean!

Has anyone any tips to restore the grout please? It's literally the full room so I'm trying to avoid having to use one of the pens as I'd be there days (and have yet to find one that didn't look like I'd just got happy with tip-ex). So far I've tried:

  • bleach
  • the pink stuff
  • hg grout restorer
  • various random bathroom cleaners
  • toothpaste

Please say someone knows of a quicker way to fix it than colouring all lines in. It's literally the full room and it's quite a big room so would take forever, I'm trying to get it liveable/looking clean, but without investing masses of time or money as it isn't our property.

Thanks for any ideas!

Re-grout the whole lot, would probably be less faff than going around with the pen?

I thought that but I'm worried about damaging the tiles with us renting - it's not as if we can replace the odd one if needed as they're so old. It's the removing the old grout bit that worries me, I'm fairly good at diy (more so than oh) but not sure I'd trust that I wouldn't break or scratch something.

You could have a go at it with peroxide and baking soda, but you'd be scrubbing away with a toothbrush for weeks...

Make a paste with bicarbonate or soda and bleach. Scrub with an old toothbrush and leave it on for a few hours, then rinse

I find those grouting pens really quick! certainly quicker than re-grouting. Get the tiles as clean as you can, tackle any really mouldy areas with bleach. Wipe dry. Go round with the pen. I can't imagine a quicker alternative?

The pens are pretty good, but you still need to clean and remove mould first.

Bicarb and white vinegar, tis easier on floor tiles than wall tiles though

Or my mum swears by white vinegar and fairy liquid in a spray bottle

Or if the grout has started to wear away, use the squeezy grout to go over it, without removing the old grout. I did that for a couple of areas that had got badly water stained in my bathroom.

Best to re-do the whole lot. Multi tool with a grout blade.

But as you're renting, I'd probably not.
