Hi all

OP posts:
Neverenough · 20/09/2007 23:03

I agree-I love seeing the DDs experience new things. We have a policy of lots of new places when we can manage it.
Why did you choose this option may I ask? Feel free to ignore me gibberish as really NOMB!

gibberish · 20/09/2007 23:07

No, love to talk about it! Long story really. We lived in a not very nice area in Shropshire when we had the first two and decided to HE them then (youngest sister was HE'd so knew a bit about it).

But before they started school we moved back to Scotland to the country, outside a tiny village and decided to try them at the village school. There were only 28 in the school so the girls were in the same class and absolutely loved their time there. Eventually had dd3 and when pregnant with dd4 outgrew our cottage so moved to a larger village nearer my parents and sisters. Sent them to the village school but they never settled. dd1 started being bullied so reverted to our original plan and took them both out. dd3 and dd4 have never been and they are all very happy being home taught. It's a nice lifestyle - for them and for us.

We've been HEing for over 6 years now

Neverenough · 20/09/2007 23:11

So-forgive me-how old are DD 1 and DD2? secondary school age? Is there a curriculum and do you get much support from Dept of Education?

Neverenough · 20/09/2007 23:13

Also, has socialising ever been an issue gibberish? I am guessing not, with 4 girls, but I've often wondered as my DDs love their school friends and seem to have forged very strong friendships.

gibberish · 20/09/2007 23:26

Socialisation has never been a problem. Yes because of having 4 of them and also because we have a huge family and lots of friends. I could understand it being an issue for others in different circumstances though.

There is no requirement to follow the curriculum and we don't strictly. There is no support from the Education Authority because when you de-register them, they are no longer responsible for their education. Infact, they can't even tell you what to teach them! We are somewhat structured though - I am quite strict about them having a broad spectrum of learning, the main emphasis being on maths and english. I also am keen for them to learn a language (we are still having discussions on this after having dabbled with Gaelic and French) and encourage them to investigate the sciences, geography and history. Art plays a bit part in our week as I am an artist.

dd1 is 14 and dd2 is 12, soon to be 13. dd1 has decided she wants to sit GCSE's so she we have decided to opt for distance learning. We will probably use Oxford Learning as they have a home-schooling section. They have told me that if dd1 spends 4 hours a week studying, she can the sit the GCSE in 6 months She is starting with English and possibly Childcare (this is something she is interested in). No idea what dd2 is going to do as she is not as interested in sitting exams. She is very artistic and has decided she wants to work with animals...

Hi I am usually on the babysteps thread but thought i would see what the experts are up to as we will be off babysteps soon!
Also happy to see people are on here quite late as i am a late night poster really..
I am doing ok babysteps wise but still have days when i don't do a mission or manage to hotspot, so need to get that sorted. I just find what with work and stuff time is the thing i need the most. I have the enthusiasm she not the time
Anyway look forward to joining you all soon
Oh and loved hearing about the home schooling, not something i have done or feel i could do (i would be useless!) but like the idea of it.

Neverenough · 20/09/2007 23:37

My DD1 and DD2 are the same ages as yours(DD2 is 13 in October). My DD1 is at Comprehensive and will sit 2 GCSEs this year and the rest(8 I think) next year.
I suppose therefore it's comparable to your DD1 in terms of timing of GCSE!

Are your girls artistic too?

Neverenough · 20/09/2007 23:40

Hi blossomsmine-I'm fairly new to MN but have been flying solo for about 4 years on and off-but am newly inspired now!

I find that I have got my routines fairly sorted but still struggle with the missions-so that is what I am working on. I find the 2 days I work I can't do anything at all so tomorrow will do 2 missions!

gibberish · 20/09/2007 23:42

Hi blossom I've been very remiss from completing the missions due to working too much! Back to 2 days so will get back to the programme shortly And I really shouldn't be here this late. Have yawned ALL DAY and even had a tic in my eye due to being so tired. But I seem to get an extra lease of life at about 10pm so here I am, yet again

never dd2 and dd3 are especially artistic. dd1 has never been very interested but dd4 is showing signs...

Neverenough · 20/09/2007 23:59

gibberish that's one thing I'd change if I had my time again-always benn rubbish at arty stuff wit the girls, really don't enjoy it, but wish I did!

Gotta go to bed, night all

gibberish · 21/09/2007 00:01

Art can be so varied though never I'm sure there would be something you could enjoy.

Night. Speak to you tomorrow no doubt x

Hi to EHM ,Never and Blossom nice to meet some more Flyers.BTW where is Tortoise before i went away she was having probs with her broadband or dial up I think?
Gibberish that's really interesting about the HE maybe i should consider it considering my current dilema. From next week DDs teacher is going to give me some work and lesson plans for what ever we miss in the morning sessions.
TBH after sitting in on classes all week i can see how little they actually do in terms of work.Much of the time is spent with what seems to be padding. In 2 hours they have snack time and play outside time .Some free play and about 15 mins reading flashcards of words one to one and a little bit of numeracy. The PE is more getting them to behave and follow instructions than actual activity.
It seems to me that they want them all very institutionalised too asap.I'm no expert of course but the ofsted report didn't fill me with confidence either.
We do lots of arty things at home as well what sort of artist are you Gibberish? I did an advanced GNVQ in art and design (10 yrs ago mind).
Really must go to bed now want to get up at 6 to get lots done before girls get up .They've been very messy this evening and i've been very tired/lazy after my great start .
