Thin bleach has disappeared!

Does anyone know why it has been impossible to buy thin bleach for weeks and weeks now? Thick bleach everywhere but no thin bleach. I can't use thick bleach due to the added perfumes etc.

More importantly anyone know anywhere selling it?

If I couldn't get bleach, I bought Milton.

gamerchick · 10/05/2021 10:44

@Kirkcat

Bleaching/sterilising stuff! Thick bleach has caustic soda added and other additives.OK for putting down drains or toilets if you want it to cling to the surface but would not have it in my house Thin bleach is a much cheaper and stronger version of MIlton, which is recommended for sterilising baby's bottles
It's actually really bad for your pipes if used regularly. People are so laksy daisy with chemicals it hurts my head.

Thick bleach is not just a more concentrated version of 'thin' bleach! It has caustic soda added, which is alright if you want it to stick to drains but I definitely would not want it anywhere near clothes, cloths, eating utensils or my hands!

Kirkcat · 10/05/2021 15:53

Milton is just a very dilute (and very much more expensive) form of thin bleach. They both contain sodium hypochlorite, which releases chlorine.Either are fine but I don't see the point in paying a lot more for a brand name

dementedpixie · 10/05/2021 16:11

My thick bleach makes no mention of caustic soda

rabbitcow · 10/05/2021 16:22

@dementedpixie

My thick bleach makes no mention of caustic soda
Nor mine. But then I put its barcode into this site

www.detergentinfo.com/search.php?lang=UK

and these are the ingredients. Sodium hydroxide is caustic soda.

CHEMICAL NAME
AQUA
SODIUM HYPOCHLORITE
SODIUM CHLORIDE
SODIUM HYDROXIDE
SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE
AMINES, C12-18-ALKYLDIMETHYL, N-OXIDES
SODIUM CARBONATE
PARFUM
SODIUM SULFATE
SODIUM POLYACRYLATE

dementedpixie · 10/05/2021 16:29

Mine does not mention sodium hydroxide either

rabbitcow · 10/05/2021 16:30

@dementedpixie

Mine does not mention sodium hydroxide either
Mine doesn't on the actual label, only when I put the barcode into that site. Did you try that?
dementedpixie · 12/05/2021 06:50

I found thin bleach in asda yesterday
It also says it contains sodium hydroxide Confused

Temp023 · 12/05/2021 06:54

Microwave clean damp cloths for a minute, sterilises them nicely

Kirkcat · 12/05/2021 12:40

The thin bleach I just bought in Morrisons (Savers range) says it contains sodium hypochlorite and nothing else.Asda's must be different.Which are the thick bleaches which claim not to include anything except sodium hypochlorite? I will look into them when i run out of the 6 litres of thin bleach I have just bought! Probably in a few years time.

I though it was just my Tesco that had stopped stocking thin bleach, but it seems to be a nationwide problem.

Thick bleach contains starch, to make it thick, which if you use it to bleach mould along the bath seal for example, will actually encourage more mould growth as the mould spores feed on the starch. I soak paper towel in thin bleach then lay it along the seal to soak and get it nice and white again but I can't do that with the thick stuff. Tesco used to sell a big value bottle which was like 30p and it was great for all manner of bleachy tasks.

channeltwo · 03/07/2021 19:21

Still out of stock. Why?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 04/07/2021 18:58

You need caustic soda to make soap. So although it’s used and the chemical reaction renders is harmless in time, it isn’t mentioned as an ingredient.

The supermarkets own brand bleach, is half the price of Domestos. I use this for the loo. Eliminates odours and kills germs. 1 bottle lasts a couple of weeks. No fowl odours, and a clean toilet bowl.

PinkYoda65 · 04/12/2021 01:02

Being a chemical scientist/engineer, amongst other "hats" that I have worn in my life expertise. I just wondered if you did manage to find the thin stuff?
I'm given to understand that it is widely and readily available in a lot of supermarkets but is usually sold in the "Value" range of the particular supermarket.
We shop at "More-reasons" and I know for a fact that it is available in their "Savers" value own brand range. You'll probably find it on a low down shelf because those clever store marketing "stylists" (yes there is such a job!) don't want you to buy the cheaper options and tend to 'hide' those less than premium products on lower shelves or high up ones too.
The 'eye level' shelves are designated for the premium (we make lots more profit from those) products!
Anyway, hope you did manage to locate some!
If I'm not mistaken, I think that you can also buy Sodium Hypochlorite in tablet form. These can be dissolved in plain water and obviously will just be as thin as water! I think that you can buy these at a good old fashioned ironmongers or you could probably order them online or speak very nicely to your local chemist or pharmacist as they call themselves these days! Americanisms finding their way into everyday English all the time now!!
They may be able to help you locate some.

Your local chemist/pharmacist can be very useful indeed in locating and ordering some long forgotten things from days gone by, like Cooling Powders, Smelling Salts & Pholcodiene Cough Linctus.

I remember like it was only yesterday, as a small child, the smell that emanated from my Nana's Enormous Clip-Clasped Brown Leather Handbag (as she opened it up to retrieve an old Thrup'ny Bit coin. That being the 'prize' for the first person to spot Blackpool Tower on our long trans-Pennine car journey, along with my parents & 2 older brothers) and there being the unmistakable old & new concocting mixture of Polo Mints, Peter Styvuusant Reds cigarettes and a small, black bakelite topped, brown glass flat rounded bottle of Ladies smelling salts! Something that my wondrously funny, entertaining & ultimately irreplaceable "Nanna Bott" used to love teasing me with & I would just love to just play along with her mesmerising charm, wit and above all else, bucket loads & lashings of pure LOVE..........something that Is sadly missed now that she has passed away.

I use thick bleach rarely, helps keep the loo clean ( tried without, long term no good), I buy online or health food shop bio d nappy fresh or laundry bleach, bit more expensive than Milton, works just the same.
It’s eco and great, you need very little, often add like a teaspoon to laundry or more if needed.

I think the disappearance of thin bleach is due to supermarkets removing less profitable items…l use thin bleach (you cant use thick bleach diluted ..the other ingredients have a bad affect) as a mouthwash and have done so for 40 years every morning and before l go to bed…diluted 8/1 with water… swill it around your teeth forcefully spit it out and take a mouthfull and gently swill two swirls snd spit it out …it gets to where brushes cant and stay working throughout the day…it is also great for dabiing on cuts and grazes that might get infected …l have treated several friends who have had serious burns that have been treated in hospital and failed….if you have toothache or an abscess it relieves pain immediately…you do need to prick the abscess or press to pop it..thin bleach is available online..finally l had s serious burn on my face from a fire in my yard …l ended up in Roehampton Hospital burns unit…after two days of intense pain when the nerves were healing l had to discharge myself and went home sploshed a cup full of thin bleach into a warm bath and got instant relief… l then continued with warm damp flannels and face healed ..with scars but relatively pain free… even my dentist who poopooed my use said during covid that l should keep using the bleach at the time when we couldnt go to the dentist🥳

Kirkcat · 02/06/2024 16:48

Which supermarkets have you tried?I got some in Morrisons a while ago, then saw a 5l container of it in Trago Mills while on holiday so that has been keeping me going
