What the heck is this secret compartment in my tumble dryer

I've always thought I was being a sensible grown up by diligently emptying the door filter of my tumble dryer on a regular basis and removing all the fluff so it was good and safe and all that...go me!

Today, with some lockdown time on my hands I was giving it a spring clean and pondered what the flap at the bottom of the dryer was hiding.

I opened it up to discover another large filter which could be slid out. It was covered in a layer of damp, dusty grot with added slime around the seal for good measure Envy

It's now had a good clean out. I've discovered £1.01, a zip attachment and a false finger nail (thanks Dd).

I've also spotted a neat little diagram that tells me I should have been cleaning this out once a month.

I now feel a bit Blushthat it's taken me about 3 years to find this grot spot. (But I did enjoy the manky mess). Am I the only person who didn't know about these secret places in tumble dryers. I am agog!

Isn't the condenser unit being full what makes tumble driers a fire hazard? I didn't clean out ours for years either and it overheated and the drier man who came out to tell me it was dead said it was because of the full condenser

Never mind the fluff is that a £2 coin in there?

I must get my DS to clean ours .
Civil Engineering student and positively Gollum-esque if he finds shiney money trinkets .....Grin

I'm going in ..... I'm very excited.

toomuchlikemyusername it's very satisfying doing the u-bends, you just need a bucket and a long stick like thing to poke down the plug hole to dislodge and crap. Also, make sure no-one turns on the tap while you're under there, I'm looking at you DD. Having stepped over me to get to the sink it didn't occur to her I was doing something sink related and turned the tap on full pelt.

When I grow up I'd like to be like chunkyriverfish.

@chunkyriverfish you are putting me to shame there. Those are the only housework reminders I have, & I sometimes abuse snooze on them. I do regularly clean my cutlery drawer & similar but it's on an ad hoc basis. I cleaned my pan drawer out the other day, that gave me great joy. And my kitchen cupboards look like a QVC Lock n Lock demonstration 😀

70isalimit it is a £1 coin. Plus a penny. Not exactly rich pickings but I would rather have found it than lost it.

I think this is a very good task for student age offspring. Old enough to do a half decent job, plus the added lure of potential free money. Plus of course future smug points when they happen upon threads like this in 20 years, they can be the ones saying 'how could you possibly not know about the filter'. These people have to be grown somewhere. Consider it your duty to have him do it.

Grin toomuch

I made DS hang washing out today ( good for his soul to get some fresh air and help round the house)

I can just imagine him in years to come with his wife and adorable DC stumbling across MN, shrieking "Don't read that , my Dmum was on there all the time , wasted days of her life chattin'shit about guinea-pigs and handbags"

I have my current tumble drier for 7 years and never knew about this filter. I’m a little bit scared of what I might find tbh!

I went on an expedition and found this contraption (pics attached).

Is this what you’re all blasting under the shower??
