Absolutely filthy oven cleaning tips

My oven is absolutely disgusting. Seriously caked on. I did get it cleaned a year or so ago but haven't kept up. What's the best way to get the grime off. It's that bad it smokes when I turn it on Confused Have a Tesco slot on Wednesday so can add any necessary products to basket but have kids so would like to keep it as non toxic as possible. Thanks in advance!

If it's really bad I would wait till lockdown was over and pay an oven cleaning service. I have a friend who does this, he is always in demand.

Littleshortcake · 05/05/2020 00:25

Take out all the trays and use oven pride (soak in a bag for 24 hours) I just use brillo pads for the rest

Tiny2018 · 05/05/2020 00:27

Pound stretcher sell a BBQ cleaner in an orange box. The stuff is amazing!
You simply rub on the chemicals from the bottle and after ten odd mins, wipe clean. You also get a huge bag that you pour the remainder of the bottle into as well as shelving racks and leave for twenty mins I believe.
Take then out and rinse, rubber gloves need to be worn at all times. I swear by it and it's only about three quid :)

My oven is the same, it's seriously disgusting and I need to do it too. I'm partly here for the tips but partly to give one of my own.

Remove the wire racks/shelves and put thin in sink or make bath if there's not enough room, with the hottest water possible. Then add some Bio Laundry detergent powder (it must be powder) and leave them over night. In the morning the baked on food just wipes of really easily. I tried a few months ago but never got round to doing the rest if the own Blush

Get an oven/ceramic scraper and some extra razor blades. Scrape the dirt off the best you can, then heat some water in the oven (just to get steam) and remove the rest if possible.

Oven mate 👍

piefacedClique · 05/05/2020 07:05

Koh.... the cleaning stuff that’s advertised on Facebook did my I hung oven door in about 5 mins!

NannyR · 05/05/2020 07:07

I got a product from Astonish, from Morrison's - it was an orange paste and it came with a scrubbing sponge, about £3. It is brilliant. My oven hadn't been cleaned for years and this stuff got the glass door sparkling clean. No fumes and you don't need to wear gloves.

Northernsoullover · 05/05/2020 07:11

I use oven mate for the glass and a box of oven pride or cheaper equivalent for the racks and bottom. If its really bad I use a paint scraper blade once its had time to work.
Top tip: if the racks are really bad use steel scourers (chunky not brillo) to remove any lumps of burnt on grease before you put them in the back to soak as it will be much more effective.

Curlyshabtree · 05/05/2020 07:36

Bicarbonate of soda and vinegar.
Make a paste with bicarb and water, spread on the oven. Spray with vinegar and leave for a while while it fizzes.
Wash off and use a wire scourer for the stubborn bits.
I buy bicarb by the kg and use it loads for cleaning. I use regular white distilled vinegar which I buy by the litre in my local Asian supermarket.

mommybear1 · 05/05/2020 07:46

Oven pride I'd get a couple if it's really bad. As pp said if you can whip the shelves/trays out and use a wire scrub to get the worst off before putting in the oven pride you'll see better results. Rather than put all the shelves in one bag perhaps just put 2 in or even 1. Use one of the oven pride bottles solely for the inside. If you still have residue inside after the oven pride try a window scraper to get it off, if there is still residue I'd try "the pink stuff". Good luck!!!

TheUnquestionedAnswer · 05/05/2020 08:44

Bicarb and vinegar is another good method...messy but aren't they all

DonLewis · 05/05/2020 08:49

Buy a couple of boxes of the oven pride stuff that comes with a giant bag. Put all the remivabke bits in the bag with the chemical and leave it over night. Pour any left over chemical into the oven and close it.

Buy brillo pads.

The nest gay get rubber gloves on and attack it with the brillo pads. If you've left it over night, it shouldn't be too bad!

DonLewis · 05/05/2020 08:50

The nest day even!

Notasyoungasiwas · 05/05/2020 13:14

Another recommendation for Oven Pride. It truly is the lazy way to clean your oven - I love it!!Smile

peekaboob · 05/05/2020 16:56

Thank you all. I even considered just getting a new oven Grin it's about 20 years old anyway.
Going to pop a couple of oven pride in my basket.

There must be something in the water! I found oven pride under the sink today. It'll need another go in a couple of weeks but it's much better. Utility room was a bit of a mess to clear up after though!! It's things like very slow roast lamb that mess it up.

I have been in tears at the state of my house today - I know it embarrasses the kids (older). Lost the plot when dd3 said to do some stuff with her today - I was working at the time. Dh was home for months not working before all this and did absolutely bugger all except gather clutter. Now he's hurt his knee (because he's very unfit) . I am NOT being the only one earning money, doing the shopping, housework, cooking AND garden.

To be fair, dd did a great job in the kitchen today. Dd2 is home from a masters that's not on right now - I love her so so much but she's so judgemental about the house. I know it's a mess but I'm not the only one living here. I could just cry. I hate living in clutter but there's nowhere to put anything. (Disclaimer: there are messier houses out there - just awful compared with my neighbours and most friends with no kids at home/newly retired and cleaners and often gardeners too.) I just can't do housework well.

Feelingsolow12345 · 07/05/2020 12:49

I use oven pride or oven brittle (it's about a pound cheaper than oven pride and does the same) leave it to soak for 24 hours plus. Once done use soap and water and use one of those metal scrubs.

For the glass door, I use the pink stuff. Coat it in it and let it sit there for about 10 minutes then scrub off. I can actually see through my oven door :)

LemonBreeland · 14/05/2020 12:07

Agree with Oven Pride and I've recently used pink stuff on my glass door. As with a pp I can now see inside my oven. For the first time in ages.
