Loud rattling washing machine

LunariaAlba · 26/04/2020 19:52

@PigletJohn and anyone else who can tell me if my machine has died.
It's a Bosch Classixx 1200 express. It was second hand when I moved into this house 7 years ago. It came with the house which is rented.
I had a load of towels in and as machine finished wash cycle there was a loud rattling noise. I thought something had fallen down behind the machine.
It stopped then began again as machine made noises to drain. I stopped the machine and took the washing out.The drum ran smoothly and there was nothing in it.
Then set it to drain.
Rattling again and machine stopped itself without draining, the reduced iron button lit up and after a minute the machine unlocked.

Sometimes towels do this to mine. It's easy to overload just with towels as they weigh a lot when wet. Is it ok now with a smaller load?

hopeforlucky3 · 26/04/2020 19:58

I had this for a couple of weeks. Only on Tuesday my machine completely stopped spinning. Turns out it was the "brushes". I was kindly offered a tradesmans phone number by my neighbour and he told me what it was straight away. He also kindly after me driving to get the replacements didn't charge me for them Grin

LunariaAlba · 26/04/2020 20:08

It's not ok now.
The loud rattling is scary and the machine trying to communicate with me via the Reduce Iron button

it will not be the brushes. They would cause the motor to stop running, or run intermittently.

If the noise occurs only when it is pumping out, at the end of each wash or rinse, start by opening the pump, in case there is a coin, bra wire, button or other item caught in it. To do this you pull down the "skirting" panel and you will see a round plastic cap rather like a jam jar lid, with a bar across to grip it. It might be seized and impossible to remove. You can use the little rubber tube to drain out residual water first. The manual will explain better (see link below).

If the machine jumps about and knocks and rattles badly during spinning, even with a light, well-balanced load, I should think it's the counterweights come loose. If you are handy you can take the top off and have a look inside. There are heavy blocks of concrete attached to the tub to reduce or prevent large movement. It might be that they can be refixed by a mender.

It doesn't sound to me like it is the drum bearings. You would usually notice specks of grease or metal particles on your laundry if that was worn out.

I don't know the relevance of the reduced ironing indicator. All that does is cause the drum to slowly tumble a number of times after it has finished spinning, to reduce creasing.

It usually costs in ther region of £60-£80 to have a local repairman come out, plus parts. Calling Bosch might be twice that, and if you do, see if they will offer you a twelve-month service contract which will cover another repair if needed.

But I would be thinking of getting a new one. The machine would be worth less than £100. www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=+Bosch+Classixx+1200+express&_sacat=71256

You can work out the actual age of the machine by looking for the "FD Nr." which means factory date. You can decode it by looking online. It might be visible round the rim of the door. The "E Nr" is a model number which a repairer will ask.

If it's included on the inventory of the house, you need to contact the owner.

LunariaAlba · 26/04/2020 20:39

Brilliant as usual PigletJohn thank you.
I'll try draining it tomorrow.
I thought maybe pre digital the machine might have an error code via the buttons lighting up.

I drained the filter in mines and it worked for a day then just stopped. I thought it was the drum but it wasn't. The machine was starting then stopping again. 🤷‍♀️

GenevaMaybe · 26/04/2020 20:51

PigletJohn is the best thing about mumsnet.

PigletJohn · 26/04/2020 20:54

If the light is flashing, the flash sequence may be indicating the fault, but you'd need the manual

This one might be similar.

Check the paddles are still properly clipped in as that sounds like what happened to my machine, a load of towels put pressure on one of the paddles in the drum once they were heavy and wet so the clip holding it in place snapped and it made a loud rattling/banging sound as the towels moving in the drum moved it. When the drum was empty it didnt make the noise as there was nothing in the drum to put force on the paddle but during the draining process it rattled again as the machinery was moving outside the drum and vibrates the paddle out of position so it rattles.

LunariaAlba · 27/04/2020 07:24

Ok ive cleaned the drain and found a 5p and a small twig and a tiny bit of fluff. The rotating thing in there is rotating freely. No noises from that.
Set machine to drain and it won't do a thing. It hummed a bit and turned itself off.
That manual doesn't feature the same control panel PigletJohn and nothing in it further other than call a service agent.
I'll be emailing the letting agents.
Thank you again for all your help

LunariaAlba · 27/04/2020 07:29

Oh the FD number is 8606 which means it was made 2009

OP posts:
hopeforlucky3 · 27/04/2020 07:47

That's exactly what mines was doing and it was the brushes I'm saying. Like it was gonna start running then cutting out.

PigletJohn · 27/04/2020 09:10

But did it rattle, hope?

hopeforlucky3 · 27/04/2020 10:44

It rattled in the weeks leading up to last week. I thought it was just because of the load being heavy but it wasn't.

LunariaAlba · 27/04/2020 16:48

The letting agent has come back to me after contacting the landlord and he is absolving himself of any responsibility for the machine as it is 'non essential'
I'll be checking my lease but am pretty resigned to buying myself a washing machine.
Any recommendations or ones to avoid?

PigletJohn · 27/04/2020 20:03

I'm a Bosch enthusiast

Any idea of price? I can look at some "Which" best buys

Some (but not all) Beko brand machines are very good for the money.

scaryreading · 27/04/2020 20:06

I'm sure the landlord should be paying for a repair or replacement. Seems an essential to me,

I've just ordered an LG from John Lewis. Samsung eco bubble looks good too.

LunariaAlba · 27/04/2020 20:19

I'm a Bosch enthusiast too but I'd like to be as economical as I can. From what I've seen though I might need to go up to £400
I'd want a separate spin programme
A relatively quick wash time if I need it-an hour or less to get my uniform turned around and dry before morning.
85hx60wx54d ish
7kg minimum

I get totally bamboozled by the choice so any help gratefully received.

lowest price Best Buys from Bosch are £329 from various vendors including John Lewis, who I find offer good service, and you can usually buy an extended warranty. May be slightly cheaper from AD or Boots. most "best buys" are in the £500/600/900/1100 range

There are scores more best buys but I am looking at the low priced ones.

I don't know what availability is like.

Sometimes you can get a "last years model" at a reduced price.

LunariaAlba · 27/04/2020 21:03

Thank you PigletJohn
May I just ask, what's your best Beko one?

OP posts:
hopeforlucky3 · 27/04/2020 22:01

I've got a Beko couldn't say which one thoughConfused. It's 7kg and has a separate 1400 spin.

LunariaAlba · 27/04/2020 22:04

Thanks hope. I'm so fed up looking at websites.
I'm done for tonight

Yes it's exhausting

I started at the top of the "best buy" list and the first Beko I came to was

My personal bias will not allow me to believe it is as durable as a Bosch

PigletJohn · 27/04/2020 22:50

ooops... Boots are out of stock now. So are AO. Next might have some. Can't access their site.

perhaps voracious hordes of 'snetters read my post.
