Is my washing machine dead?

I've been lurking here for a while and am a bit embarrassed to make my debut with such a boring question, but

all my electricity went off suddenly this morning, and when I went to investigate the fuses in the laundry room there was an awful smell coming from the machine (which I'd switched on not long before). Plug smelled a bit weird too.

The machine is a good one but is over ten years old and has been ailing (leaking a bit) for a while. Anyone have any idea how likely this is to be reparable? Should I get someone out or just bite the bullet and buy a new one?

Thanks!

if you've got a good local supplier/repair person then I would check it out with them before you splash out on a new one.

We've had ours mended a few times (after little fingers have fiddled!)

Congrats on your first post

It might just be the fuse, if the plug was smelling. Can you check that?

totaleclipse · 15/09/2007 17:09

Yes, sounds like a fuse has blown in the plug, but it could have been triggered by leaking, so it may happen again.

What make and model is the machine?

Knickertwist · 15/09/2007 17:17

Thanks for your replies I think it's more than just the plug. The really strong smell was coming from the machine itself. Almost like gas (actually I thought it was the boiler nearby to start with). Daren't switch it on again at the moment, so it's sitting there with some water festering in the bottom of the drum...

It's an old German one, traceukw1: Privileg 900. I don't think they produce it anymore.

Anybody else out there with any advice?

Can you ring someone and ask for their advice? I did this when my washer packed in a few months ago - was actually ringing for a call-out but he told me basically not to bother and it was probably going to die very soon (he was right ). Just used good old yellow pages.

Thanks, canmummy. I think that's what I'll do. Unless the idea of a new one totally seduces me between now and Monday!

Basically OH who is an engineer says at that age its not worth spending the money on it, sorry.

Knickertwist · 16/09/2007 10:04

Thanks traceukw1. Don't worry, I'm not gutted at the prospect of having to replace it (it's done us good service), I was just hoping for some external confirmation of my own hunch
