Sticky sturfaces on oak table

We have had a granite & oak dining table for years, The granite is swet into the oak so the wood is just on the edges of the table. When we first bought it, it was a natural oak finish (altohugh I'm sure it had some sort of varnish/waxing). However we could not stop it getting sticky - literally felt like someone had spilt glue onto it. No amount of sanding it down or using specialist products improves it.
So when we had the kitchen repainted we had the oak painted, then glazed, using F&B products (in case that's relevant). However it STILL gets revoltingly sticky. The decorator even re-did it for us, but still it has this tacky feel to it. We ended up putting an oilcloth on it, but its such a shame to cover up the surfaces like this.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could cause it and what we might be able to do about it? The only alternative we can come up with is have a sheet of glass cut to fit it.
Any thoughts / suggestions ? Thanks.

Sorry, I don't have a solution but I'll follow your thread as my table is the same.

It's annoying isnt it! I know that often in pubs /restaurants you get that 'tacky table' feeling, but I assumed it was the industrial strength cleaner that they spritz on whenever they clean the table, after each customer. We tend to just use soapy water on ours - when I wipe the table after each use (although i've since used all sorts of abrasive products as I'm so annoyed with it Wink ...)

I would try removing all the paints/finishes that have been applied, if that is possible now, get back to the natural wood and leave it alone and see what happens. (don't spill red wine on it while it is a this stage! ) I think oak has a natural sort of oil which is why is survives so well untreated out of doors (although it does go silver grey outside) the stickiness may be a reaction between different products that have been absorbed into the wood. If it stabilises after a while you could try a wax finish or apply satin or matt varnish - but not cheap stuff.

Another thing that may cause this is if you are using some form of spay polish or cleaner. If the wood has been sealed the spray may not be absorbed and be just lying on the surface and then turning sticky after a time.

I would sand it back and oil it. I use coconut oil, but sheringdons is made for the jobGrin. I just scrub my raw wood with fairy liquid and then oil it

Fairy keeps the sticky off our wood table...

@Windyatthebeach

Is this after they have collected all the teeth during the night?

mermaidbutmytailfelloff · 19/04/2020 12:32

It’s polish reacting with the surface I think. The only solution for us was sanding back to bare wood and ditching the polish. We tried everything before that, turpentine, acetone, soap powder.... nothing helped.

Thanks for all your helpful replies - seems I may have to get the decorator back for this then. Its a complex job because the 3 granite panels have to be removed to enable it to be done, and they weigh a ton!
@Windyatthebeach so have you always just used fairy liquid on yours?
I'm thinking having a piece of glass made might be the easiest solution! Or get a new table which is my second train of thought, although my OH might not agree (altohugh the stickiness drives him mad too se he might!)
