How do you wash and dry your towels without them losing their soft fluffiness?

60 degrees and tumble dry.

Replace fairly often. Donate old ones to the vet and my dog's groomers.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 12/04/2020 22:40

Tumble dry and no fabric softener.

DramaAlpaca · 12/04/2020 22:42

Wash at 60, tumble dry, no fabric conditioner. I like my towels a bit scratchy rather than soft & fluffy, so in ideal weather I'd line dry them.

Puddlesplasher · 12/04/2020 22:46

60 degree wash, no fabric conditioner, tumble dry.

Tumble dry to have soft towels - they come in scratchy off the line.
Don't have to replace them though.

In this weather, I'll hang them out to dry on the line, and then put them in the tumble dryer for 30mins at the end.

My technique as well !

TeaChocKitKat · 13/04/2020 09:38

Wordofwarning - not often enough but I have just bought some new ones and don't want them to suffer the same fate as all of our others!

I like them scratchy, so wash with no FC and line dry. However in winter we have to tumble them and they end up all soft and floppy (which I don't like) so I think that's the answer. I only replace them when they disintegrate.

Lou670 · 13/04/2020 09:52

Line dry where possible. I do use fabric conditioner. I don't own a tumble dryer as don't like them.

I do like the feel of fluffy towels but when fluffy it takes longer to dry yourself. I prefer them to be scratchy as more effective at drying yourself.

I was everything at 40 degrees. The only exception (especially now) are my daughters' nursing uniforms which I was at 60 degrees.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 13/04/2020 10:08

I only have hand towels and one for my hair.
They get washed at 40 and hung on the line/an airer till they are dry. I don't own a tumble dryer.

I don't like fluffy towels though- they always feel a bit slimy when they get wet.

ppeatfruit · 14/04/2020 09:52

I never use fabric softener, especially for towels. (they are not so absorbent with the FC) I use half a cup of bicarb of soda in the drum (that is great for keeping the colours clear, esp for the navy ones). Half a ball of eco detergent liquid , in the drum.

I dry on a rack by the radiator in bad weather (I don't use our tumble dryer because of keeping down the electricity bills and the environment) . In the garden during good weather.

RobertSmithdoesmyhair · 14/04/2020 10:01

Wash at 60, line dry, then 10 mins in the dryer to fluff them up.

KittenVsBox · 14/04/2020 10:08

Washed at 40 with everything else.
Line dried where possible, otherwise hung on an airer.
No tumble drier or fabric conditioner in the house.

Deux · 14/04/2020 10:20

Too much powder can make towels a bit stiff if it’s not rinsed out properly. No fabric softener as it reduces absorbency.

Dry on the clothes horse or outside and then finish off for 15 minutes in the tumble dryer on low to get them soft.

Deux · 14/04/2020 10:21

Oh and only wash white ones with other white items, occasionally adding some Napisan to keep them bright.

AmberleighMouse · 14/04/2020 10:24

If you're in a hard water area, wash with calgon or a big dose of vinegar occasionally to strip off any build up of limescale.

YorkshireParentalPerson · 14/04/2020 19:19

Wash at 60 and rinse with a cap full of white vinegar, line dry and tumble for 30 minutes to fluff up.

Fabric conditioner makes your towels less absorbent so your towels don't dry you aswell.

ppeatfruit · 15/04/2020 09:14

Yes as deux says I use specific 'softener' balls . (you can get them in HF shops . They last forever and are much better value than Calgon for softening the water. Then you don't need FC.

TimeWastingButFun · 07/05/2020 01:10

Wash with no fc and line dry if possible otherwise hang up in the laundry. Tumble dry very rarely as I prefer them a little scratchy.

managedmis · 07/05/2020 01:18

I'd prefer then crunchy and dried outside but dd has allergies so we do the tumble dryer. They're bone dry.

TimothyTerrible · 07/05/2020 01:18

60 deg, very small amount of fabric conditioner (for the smell), tumble dry. Towels are the only things I regularly put in the tumble dryer. They stay soft for ages here. Can’t be doing with scratchy towels.

pilates · 06/06/2020 17:49

Line dry and finish in tumble dryer

Jennyie1 · 09/06/2020 15:44

On a 40° wash with powdered detergent and distilled white vinegar instead of softener (don't use softner for any washing anymore)

I don't wash towels unless I can get them dry outside. I have plenty of clean ones!
