Is it possible to get the smell of cat pee out of a carpet??

Have just moved into a new house and I think the cat of the previous owners must have been distressed and used the lounge carpet in one particular corner for its toilet.

The lounge now stinks of cat pee. I am 37 weeks pregnant and I don't have the time or inclination to choose and fit new carpets, however, nor do I want to spend my first few weeks post partum lying on the sofa in a lounge that smells of a cat tray, it is vile.

Some people have said the only thing to do is to take the carpet out, but I want to see if there is anything I can do before having to resort to that. The smell is lessening slowly, which gives me some hope.

a solution or bio washing powder liberelly splached around the offending area and scrubbed should break it down. good luck!

Do you mean make a solution or just sprinkle the powder on its own? Should the solution be really strong?

make a solution to scrub the bit of carpet and sort of slosh it around the area as much as poss- scrub, dry, scrub, dry, slosh iyswim!

OK, thanks. Is there no rinsing required afterwards?

Will try this this afternoon - will probably be good for positioning the baby!

no- just hoover well when the carpet is totally dry! (leave a few days)

Bicarbonate of Soda is supposed to solve all smelly problems? I would give that a go. Failing that - get someone to steam clean and spray with loads of Frebreeze. Good luck with baby. Is it your first?

If you can lift the carpet a bit do the floor underneath as well - especially if they are floorboards as it can really get into it. I'd really scrub the boards - let them and the carpet dry then put a good layer of bicarb down between the carpet and the floor.
