Hi,

We are slightly on a budget at the moment saving up as much as we can for our baby arriving in the summer . We’re not short on money but I’m a bit tight 🤣 I love our home to smell fresh/floral , and recently since my husband got back from a sporting event , he walked through the house with his wet gear (as in clothes not...tackle) and muddy shoes and I can’t seem to shift the smell since he left his things downstairs as it was early morning and then he went to work, I am really sensitive to bad odours since being pregnant and it’s making me very twitchy ! I’m looking for your best reed diffusers and plug ins that make the home smell nice and homely without breaking the bank (so nothing John Lewis pricey) . I like Yankee Candle diffusers if anyone has any recommendations because I did have one in the bathroom but it didn’t seem to last long ! It’s mainly the kitchen and dining room that never smells homely !

Thank you !

Bump because I'd like to know too. Although have you ever tried an essential oil diffuser? Initial cost may seem more expensive but overall work out better and you can use natural oils so you're not breathing in chemicals. I tend to use essential oils such as lavender and rose etc (mother nature goodies on ebay sell them and you just use a few drops at a time). Alternatively if you have radiators, get a wet cloth with some drops of essential oil on and put it on a warm radiator and the smell will fill the room as the cloth begins to dry. Just a warning though, certain essential oils aren't suitable for pregnancy and pets but generally those ones are very unusual/odd oils that you wouldn't use for scent anyway.

teach your husband to clean up like adults do. Soon you'll have a lot more work.

plug-ins are a waste of electricity, MN doesn't generally care about the planet of course. All extra stinks are chemicals of course.

check your local charity shops, full of the things given as tatmas gifts to people (like me) who can't stand extra stinks.

Big fan of Aldi reed diffusers here, you can also pick up some lovely ones in Homesense.

@mencken bit harsh! It was a one off he’d been out, and then had an early start , not like he does it every day and I’m constantly cleaning up after him like a child .

Will try aldi reed diffusers thank you!

Reed diffusers from Home Bargains are great! Not the small ones but the bigger ones that are the same range as their own 'yankee candle' dupes. Only a couple of pound as well.

Monetmoney · 05/03/2020 22:09

The unstoppables plug ins are great, especially the Dreams one

I love the reed diffusers from Sainsbury's. The best ones I've found!

Biensur40 · 09/03/2020 19:07

I like Price's reed diffusers. The Chef ones are designed to get rid of cooking smells. I also open the windows for 10 mins a day, even in winter.

The nicest oil reed diffuser I've ever smelled, hands down, is Zara Home White Jasmine. Though it's not cheap, it is gorgeous.

I've a few different thing I use, discovered by accident.

Oil burners - you can buy a basic ceramic one in Poundland. Then use tea lights (Ikea for a massive bag of them) and burn essential oils in water. My faves are tiserand ones who'd you can pick up in TK Maxx, or Amazon sometimes have them discounted. The body shop also do an amazing satsuma one which is lovely and citrusy for a kitchen

I also have an air diffuser. Cost about £18 from amazon and I used the same Tisserand oils in it. It sends up a fine vapour of dry, cool 'steam'. Use with eucalyptus/ lavender when we've got a colds. Esp good to put on in kids room when they are sniffly. Lots are colour changing so make a good night light too.

Recently discovered wax melts which I know are a bit controversial on MN. These give out a great scent, and I've been pleased with the 2 scents I tried so far (orange burst, and lime, basils &mandarin). I use them with the cheapie burners above

Use 'lighthouse' for an additional 10% off.

Also meant to add that I have a reed diffuser form M&S called 'calm' which is in our en-suite. It smells like a spa, absolutely gorgeous. I only get when they do the 20% off though cos it's £15 normally. I also only use 3 of the sticks in the bottle rather than the 7/8 they provide, so the scent is a bit less in your face and will hopefully last longer. 3 is enough for a small room, and I've found a bottle usually lasts about 3-4 months.
