I'm embarrassed to say since moving to this home with floorboards in the hall & kitchen, tiles in bathroom, I've never mopped them. Do I use a traditional mop or one of those squeegee type folding ones? Any tips or advice on which ones are best/easiest? Any time I've mopped previously, the water is filthy after 1 sweep! What I doing wrong ?

Well the floors will be filthy if they've never been mopped. You may need to do several changes of water to start with. I have a steam cleaner at home which has a detachable cloth that you wash after use, at work we use the Vileda type traditional mop and just wash the heads.

Normal mop. Two buckets. One for floor cleaner and hot water, other for hot water. Then you can clean your mop between. Once the floor is clean use one bucket.

Thanks for the tips. The 2 bucket idea sounds like a great idea.

Never use a steam mop on wooden floors, though. It warps the wood.

I use an e-cloth mop. The mop head bit is attached by Velcro so you can chuck it in the washing machine after use.

Thoroughly vacuum first and then use a detergent like flash in hot water. Regularly rinse your mop.

I do a thorough clean with flash once a week or so and imbetween I freshen the floor up with Method floor cleaner. You just squirt it directly onto the floor and wipe over with the mop. Very quick and dries quickly too.

My kitchen gets very heavy use with children & pets. The rest of the house gets mopped less frequently (bathroom weekly too)
