How to clean a ceramic sink

lovemydog301 · 17/02/2020 08:28

I recently moved into a new house, which has a very stained sink. I think it's ceramic.

Have tried commercial cleaners (eg Mr Muscle), to no avail.

Don't want to pay for a new one as I'm hoping to get a new kitchen in the next couple of years.

Any ideas?

Tia!

magic eraser generally. But that one is pretty far gone!

I’d use VIM if you can still get it anywhere. It’s a powder and needs a bit of water. Loads of hard work, but it usually does the job.

Fill up with water and drop a load of bleach in and leave overnight.

I'm a huge fan of eco cleaning, but honestly, I'd probably empty a bottle of bleach in there and let it sit for 12 hrs or so.

Modwolvesrock · 17/02/2020 08:33

Bleach?

Modwolvesrock · 17/02/2020 08:34

Sorry, great minds!

I clean tea stains etc from my ceramic sink with thick bleach and a gentle sponge. But this looks pretty far gone.

HappydaysArehere · 17/02/2020 09:14

Something like Vim which is a powder and more of a scourer. Much more effective than a cream cleanser. Lakeland also does a powder type of cleaner called,I think,, Counter Magic. That is very effective.

Fozzleyplum · 17/02/2020 09:17

I'd clean it first with Barkeepers Friend, which is a scouring powder, then fill it with a strong bleach solution and leave it overnight. If that doesn't work, it's probably unfixable.

TheVanguardSix · 17/02/2020 09:20

Bar Keepers friend is the absolute business.

I accidently discovered that Buster Plughole Block Preventer (blue bottle - £3 in Aldi and most Supermarkets) sorts that issue out in 30 minutes.

It is not what it is marketed for, but OMG it works. Cover the stained areas (test it on a small inconspicuous patch first) and leave. Then wash off 30 mins later.

Just careful not to spill on workbench, clothes etc as it will also take colour out of those.

I don't think you'll be able to get the stains off that - that's why we got a black sink....

MrsCrosbyNRTB · 17/02/2020 22:00

Yes to the fill it up with hot water and add a load of bleach.

After this put a load of bio washing powder (not liquid) in it and add enough water to make a paste. Give it a good scrub all over then fill it with hot water again (including the washing powder paste) and leave for another few hours.

I reckon it’ll come up fine (optimistic).

PLEASE post some “after” photos!

NotMeNoNo · 17/02/2020 22:04

If it's actual ceramic (shiny china, like a bathroom sink) try Barkeepers Friend. Might need a few goes and overnight bleach/descaling.

If it's a slightly grainy material, it will be composite or plastic, there's no hope.

emsyj37 · 17/02/2020 22:06

I have a ceramic sink. It stains quickly and easily. Bleach wont touch it but beekeepers friend is abrasive and removes the stains. They come back tho - I wouldn't ever have a ceramic sink again!

Neighneigh · 17/02/2020 22:07

Limescale removing toilet cleaner left for an hour or so also works well, and with less scrubbing needed. Makes the kitchen smell like a loo but it does restore the whiteness

Bowerbird5 · 17/02/2020 22:41

I have a spray of bar keepers friend. Spray on leave a couple of minutes then rub off then fill with hot water. Otherwise what others said I would leave bleach overnight too. Or neat for a couple of hours. It looks like tea stains so it might come up clean. Good luck.
