Can you scrimp on a outside rotary washing line or is it worth just paying for a decent one?

Ours broke in storm Keira as I stupidly left it up . Looking on amazon they are roughly about £90 but a few come up as £25 ish.

Does anyone have a reliable model or any rubbish ones to avoid. Many thanks.

I would get a brabantia one. I’ve had two and they are great. Worth the extra, I would say.

Those are the more pricy ones I’ve seen. I think it’s probably a case of not being tempted into a false economy with a cheap one that will break.

Brabantias are worth it. Buy from somewhere else rather than pay the Amazon premium - you might still be able to get it delivered.

I ended up getting a cheap £15 from Argos but paid a bit more for a metal ground spike and a decent zip up cover. I've been really pleased with it but I did put it away in the shed for the winter.

Get the expensive one, I had a Barbantia one for years, replaced with a cheap one and it's awful. Had one year out of it, I'll be buying a Barbantia shortly.

A cheap one will likely last you two or three years, a fancy one you'd expect more like ten+. The economics mean you can go either way, but if you've got the cash get the better model.

We got a cheap one in Argos when we first got a house - it was rubbish. We managed to bodge it together long enough (with a lot of other expenses going on, replacing the clothesline was down the priority list) for a couple of years (and with less "line" than originally available due to breakages).

We went for a Brabantia when we did replace it. We now have that 15 years, and have gone through 2 covers but the line itself is still perfect. It stays outdoors all year round, and gets a lot of use most of that time (including heavy wetsuits and sailing gear frequently, and drying out tents a couple of times a year).

I did put a bit of WD40 around the base a couple of years ago, to help against a couple of rust marks starting where it goes into the base-post, and on the opening mechanism, and that seems to have helped it quite a bit.

My Brabantia is about 12 years old and still going strong, we did replace the base post last year as that got damaged in avery strong storm.

I bought a Brabantia when I moved into this house, 26 years ago.
It is still absolutely fine.

Had a cheap one from Wilko which lasted a few years then bought a Brabantia which is more substantial, was about £50 from Robert Dyas.

We got a Brabantia when we moved into this house 13 years ago. It's solid as a rock, can be moved up and down with a twist handle and the threads can be rethreaded through the clips rather than being a single piece all round which are prone to sagging and snapping.

MIL has a £30 B&Q one which is on its way out after 3 years of use and it doesn't hold anywhere near as much.

Got a cheap one from Wilko 3 years ago when we moved, no probs with it do far. It has a cover and I bought a proper twist in spike with a closing lid. It stays out (with cover on) all spring and summer, goes into the shed in autumn. I think if you look after it a cheap one will last ok, but I've never had an expensive one to compare!

Brabantia here too. 17 years old, and still going strong. Have a look at Dunelm; they seem to be slightly cheaper there.

I got a wilko one - not a cheapy, but less than a Brabantia. Think it was £40-50 for the biggest size. It's been absolutely great, had it 3 or 4 years now and it's still going strong.
