Talk to me about lovely smelling houses

We are now the proud owners of a very very old dog and a puppy and I've become paranoid about the house being stinky.

I love when you walk into someones house and it smells gorgeous. How do you do it?

I hoover and mop daily. I have reed diffusers dotted around and a plug in in the kitchen.

I've been looking at an aromatherapy mist diffuser, are they good?!

Let me know all your lovely smelling secrets please

Can I say a massive thank you to Lolbrador for starting this thread! After reading about air purifiers here I purchased one and it’s an absolute marvel for taking away the smells that have lingered from the pets. I’ve struggled for a few years and tried to mask it with disinfectant etc but this little beauty has taken the smell away and freshened the air to a missivly noticeable difference.

I’m not on commission honestly!!

katmunchkin · 01/03/2020 08:38

Which one did you buy @Paperdolly ? I've also just had a look!

Paperdolly · 01/03/2020 08:42

£32.99 one

katmunchkin · 01/03/2020 08:44

Fab thanks, will give it a try!

Sillyscrabblegames · 01/03/2020 08:45

I have smelly dogs. Washing their bedding very regularly - every other day-, helps.
I also keep them off soft furnishings but they are allowed on the leather sofas when we are there.
When you have a puppy you will struggle against the wee smell so try restrict the pups access to rooms to limit the damage.

There was a case where someone's dog died after accidentally being poisoned by zoflora.

Also it’s really bad for the environment, it ends up in waterways which we all rely on for the fish we eat and water we drink. Bleach cleaners are long lasting harmful for aquatic life. They aren’t necessary to use.

Washing the dogs and their bedding regularly and opening the windows a lot.

VivaLeBeaver · 01/03/2020 09:41

I’ve ordered some of the almond floor cleaner, sounds nice.

BoffinMum · 01/03/2020 19:52

Miele Cat and Dog vacuum, used at least a couple of times a week, air every room for half an hour daily, strong extractor fan in the kitchen, a few drops of aromatherapy oil on radiators or light bulbs when necessary.

Pinotpleasure · 02/03/2020 11:32

The “Mrs Meyer’s Clean Day” brand of cleaning products smell amazing. They are eco-friendly and biodegradable. I used them all the time when I lived in the US.

I’ve just discovered that you can get them in the UK via the Amazon UK website.....but it’s expensive here! I would guess they are possible sold in Wholefoods stores in the UK too.

However a little goes a very long way.

Paperdolly · 02/03/2020 12:00

That almond floor cleaner is just for wooden floors and laminate isn’t it? I’ve got tiled. 🙁

VivaLeBeaver · 02/03/2020 12:32

Amazon reviews say that people happily use it on their tiled floors...I'm planning to.

Sillyscrabblegames · 04/03/2020 06:19

There is a lemon version of the almond cleaner which is for tiles etc. It's lovely and I prefer it to the almond

Paperdolly · 04/03/2020 15:25

Does it leave a film on a tiled floor?

Pinotpleasure · 04/03/2020 18:29

Ha ha I was in Dunelm earlier today and near the tills they had a selection of ‘Method’ products.
I nearly bought the ‘Rhubarb’ floor cleaner for my kitchen floor but the young woman at the till had a sniff and didn’t like it as it was “too sweet”, so I put it back.

I did have a sniff of the almond floor cleaner but I don’t have wooden floors. It was super-sweet! Too overpowering and smelt just like the maraschino cocktail cherries they (used to) put in Snowball cocktails as a garnish lol!

userxx · 05/03/2020 11:29

maraschino cocktail cherries

I loved those!!! I would dip into the jar and happily scoff the lot.

PhilCollinsFingerWag · 07/03/2020 08:20

Mmmmm, maraschino cocktail cherries.......method now on the shopping list.

PhilCollinsFingerWag · 07/03/2020 08:24

The Fabulosa range of cleaning disinfectant is good.
I use it instead of fabric conditioner, as well as cleaning the surfaces.
The Ocean breeze one smells lovely xx

ThunderPython · 07/03/2020 12:01

Yes Fabulosa is lovely. There's one called Unciorn Dust (or similar) and is smells of sherbet and larma violets!

Dazedandconfused28 · 07/03/2020 12:06

I pop some of the unstopables scent boosters into my cushion covers & that leaves a nice freshly washed linen smell, I replace them every few weeks.

AnnaMagnani · 07/03/2020 12:13

Your dog has an amazing sense of smell to help him or her make sense of his environment.

With all those reed diffusers and sprays you will be making the dog and any asthmatic or migraine sufferer visiting your house thoroughly miserable.

Hoover. Wash the dogs' bedding. Mop the floors. Open the windows. Clean the dog. That's it.

I'd rather visit a house that smells of dog than artificial fragrance.

DameXanaduBramble · 07/03/2020 12:21

Windows open, always, when you’re home.
Wash dog bedding very, very regularly.
I have a room where I dry clothes, it smells beautiful! Softener etc.
Clean upholstery with van carpet cleaner machine reg.
vacuum loads
Good quality reed diffusers, never those dreadful, cheap, air wick plug in jobs.

DameXanaduBramble · 07/03/2020 12:24

I use all the method floor cleaner. The rhubarb is my fav, followed by the almond, which i use on my ceramic floor too.

DameXanaduBramble · 07/03/2020 12:24

Ooh yes, i also have a pet odour absorber from Ocado underneath my sofa.
