Does Flylady really work or do you just become a bit housework obssessed?

Once again thinking of learning to fly but just worried it might take over my life !!

How's it been for you?

OP posts:
Jas · 03/09/2007 07:16

It can go either way

I'll never have an immaculate house, but FL and mumsnet combined means I'm not embarressed to invite people in unannounced any more, so it is definitely woth a try.

McDreamy · 03/09/2007 07:29

How long have you been doing it Jas?

OP posts:
shouldbe · 03/09/2007 07:39

I've been FLYing for about 9months.
I wouldn't say I'm obssessed but I do find I need my daily habit of sitting down in front of the computer to plan my day around the FLY threads - just making a list for the day seems to help me stay on top of things most of the time. When I don't come onto the FLY threds things tend to go downhill pretty fast!
It's not necessarily about the FL site for me either (I rarely even look at the missions) more chat and support from the others on the FLY threads which help me through the mundane tasks which come with having small children and trying to keep on top of jobs around the house.

McDreamy · 03/09/2007 07:54

Did you start with all the babysteps? TBH they put me off abit I just want to get on with it...but don't know where to start!

OP posts:
FlameBatfink · 03/09/2007 08:02

When I was doing it it was great - I need the babysteps and the routines though or it all goes tits up. When I stopped shining my sink was when it all went downhill.

I miss having the house where people could come in... I desperately need to get back to it but I keep threatening to (even start for a few days) and then it all lapses again.

Will finish work and go sort my sink.

shouldbe · 03/09/2007 08:08

I've never really done the babysteps but am following the threads where Jas is posting them at the moment and they're actually pretty useful - just setting up certain tasks to do daily in order to stop them building up etc makes a lot of sense.
You don't need to start with them, you can start anywhere but I'd have thought getting the basic routines in place is worthwhile.

Nbg · 03/09/2007 08:08

I really want to do it purely because I am so unorganised and leave everything till its really bad.

But the babysteps put me off too.

McDreamy · 03/09/2007 08:18

Glad I'm not the only one NBG! I think I will give it a go then and do as you suggest by incorporating a couple of babysteps in as I go.

Wish me luck! Now then where to start........

OP posts:
McDreamy · 03/09/2007 08:19

As Shouldbe suggests I mean!

OP posts:
SimplySparkling · 03/09/2007 08:19

I agree with shouldbe. I've not done the babysteps before but I've been reading Jas' babysteps thread and it is the best way to start without feeling completely overwhelmed, I'm sure. I've sent the link to my sister as she would benefit from joining at the beginning and has said that FLYlady could help her.

Nbg Maybe you could join the babysteps thread or the FLY thread and see which suits you best? Leaving everything until it's really bad is very stressful (I've got lots of experience with this!) and faffing about with a shiny sink or laced up shoes seems like a small price to pay in order to get on top of it all. I post as someone who has been on FLY threads for months and still has a spare bedroom which is a tip and a living room with far too many unsorted papers and stuff. My goal for getting on top of it is the end of this year.

Nbg · 03/09/2007 08:29

I might dive into the baby thread then but start where everyone else is.

I cant be doing with the make up and tying shoe laces thing though
Its scruffy clothes for me when I'm in the house lol.

SimplySparkling · 03/09/2007 08:44

Good for you, Nbg. I don't wear make up if I'm only going to be at home, either. As for clothes, I wear whatever jeans are being currently worn and a scruffy/cheap t-shirt. The one thing that's an absolutle must is showering and washing my hair each morning. If I didn't, I'd have to cover up each mirror to stop myself having a fright. Ken Dodd's hair is salon perfect compared to mine each morning!

scattyspice · 03/09/2007 08:45

High Mcdreamy.

Flylady works for me because:
Hadn't done any housework since DD born (2.5 yrs ago!)
The cleaning is broken down into quick tasks that can be ticked off.
You don't panic about stuff you haven't done as it'll come round again.

I didn't do the baby steps - just joined in with the Flylady thread on MN (a very friendly bunch.)

Nbg · 03/09/2007 09:01

or do i go hardcore and join the fly bunch????

BBBee · 03/09/2007 09:04

I did it for a while and it was great - will try and get back to it actually.

Can make you feel guilty sometimes but most of the time just gives you a friendly nudge yo get your arse in gear. and somehoew having a list somewhere does help.

LilRedWG · 03/09/2007 09:06

I'm glad someone else asked this question. I joined Flylady ages ago and was terrified by the amount of emails bombarding me telling me to do things, so I immediately opted out I do need a routine though so may join Jas's thread.

shouldbe · 03/09/2007 09:11

I'm on the FLY threads, as are several others here - I can't speak for the others but I'm certainly not hardcore FL material I'd have a look at the babysteps for a week or so then come across to the daily FLY thread.
Hopefully you'll soon find a routine that works for you

Jas · 03/09/2007 09:12

I've bee doing it a year, Mc~Dreamy.

I don't wear shoes or makeup, and would be scorned by proper FLYladies, but doing the babysteps again is helping me get back on track after the holidays..

We're only a week in on the babysteps (we've missed some of the really naff days out altogether)...come ad give it a try. (Lots of the babysteppers are also on the regular FLY thread. I'm sure it will all join together easily enough in a few more weeks )

McDreamy · 03/09/2007 09:15

Thanks jas and everyone else I think I will join your thread!

OP posts:
BadKitten · 03/09/2007 13:59

It worked for me. I did get a bit obssessed with my sink for a while and wouldn't let anyone put anything in it! That was five years ago.

I don't subscribe anymore but I still follow some of the stuff ie tackle kitchen sink first then chant (in my mind!) 'wheres your laundry' so even when the house is pigsty like (ie now hence me wandering into this area of Mumsnet) I still have a clean sink with dishes done and washing under control.

blossomsmine · 03/09/2007 16:26

I have tried on and off to fly and then slipped into bad ways again. This time i am following the babysteps and Jas's posts which i am finding really helpful. Flylady just confuses me, i don't think i read and take it in enough to be honest but on the babysteps thread it is all so much more straightforward. I am not sure if you can notice a difference in my house yet, i was always good at making it look clean and tidy, yet if you digged abit deeper i was messy, unorganised and out of control really! I think now i am starting to feel abit more in control of it all, which really helps stresswise!

ludaloo · 03/09/2007 16:46

I have become slightly housework obsessed, but mostly FLY has helped no end.
I echo what all the others have said though...I find the threads on MN far more helpful than the FLy site really.
Jas has been doing a sterling job with the baby steps. I feel that I now have a good routine (which slips occassionally, but doesn't take too long to rectify) and my house is definately under control....it used to control me, but I'm the boss these days!!!

ludaloo · 03/09/2007 16:47

(I have been FLYing for almost a year now)
