Dyson blew up! What to buy next?

7 year old Dyson 41 just made an odd noise and died. Strange burnt smell too. Filters washed out and left to cool down and same thing happened when I switched it on again. 😳 Pretty fed up as they just don't seem to last like the old Dyson war horses- this one was covered in cracks and bits had fallen off.

House is fairly big- 4 beds, 4 reception rooms- mainly carpets but hall, lounge and sitting room are wooden floors along with tiles in kitchen and bathrooms. One hairy dog who moults a lot so need something good for that.

I was pretty set on not having another Dyson ( have had three of them in the past 25 years or so). My dad has the newer small ball one and it just seems so flimsy and plasticky and I really don't like the faff with the hose ( my old one you just lifted up and attached the thingies to the end. )

I was almost sure that I was going to go for a Shark liftaway but I went to Curry's yesterday and they are so heavy and clunky. The liftaway thing looks like a good idea but seems really heavy- (the Dyson has a long hose so you don't have to lift it up the stairs. ) I have heard that Sharks are amazing to start with but then lose suction.

Don't like Henrys or cylinders. Thinking of going to a stick model (MiL swears by g-tech. Air am) as I want something light that's easy to whip in and out of the cupboard but read mixed reviews. Prefer not to have bags. Also strangely fascinated by the robot ones as I absolutely hate vacuuming.

Don't want to spend a fortune but up to £350ish ok

Any suggestions?
TIA

I've just bought a Vax Pet vacuum.
I'm quite impressed with it.
I've got two dogs, it cleans well.

I've had Dyson's & Sharks, but I prefer this Vax.

FairfaxAikman · 08/02/2020 11:21

Had a Dyson, Vax and a Shark in the past and by far prefer the Shark.

Filters cleaned regularly and I've not noticed any loss of suction.

It is a little heavy, but the superior suction outweighs that - first time I used it I managed the downstairs loo and the hall before I had to empty it.

BrigitsBigKnickers · 08/02/2020 11:26

Thanks.
Which shark model do you have?

I have two Sharks, one upstairs - the Shark Stick, and a liftaway downstairs. I have a very, very hairy dog who moults constantly. The Shark Liftaway copes with her. You can also get a hard floor attachment.

I like Sharks because they are solid, and cope with a lot of punishment. They are also easy to empty.

Get an iRobot vacuum Wink

BrigitsBigKnickers · 08/02/2020 12:37

Thanks - Which I robot model do you have? Is it the roomba?

Miele cat and dog. Mine is 9yrs, my mum's is 15... We're a 'moulty' family and have a long haired dog too!

MrsFezziwig · 08/02/2020 12:44

I have a Shark stick and it’s fine, obviously not heavy. Having said that my house is small (single level) and doesn’t really represent much of a vacuuming challenge.
I’m really jealous of my friend’s Eufy robot though!

Paddingtonthebear · 08/02/2020 12:45

Sharks have amazing suction at the start, but this often doesn’t last. We had one a few years ago when they first came out over here, fab at the start but disappointing after 6 months or less.

We’ve just bought a new vacuum, I was watching the Shark rep do a full display of the lift away in Currys and I was tempted. But husband didn’t like how many components there were and all the clicks and clacks of putting it together, lots of hinges and clips that could go wrong. We then went to to the Dyson rep in the same store and nearly bought the Light Ball which was same price as the Shark. But I didn’t want to give James Dyson money and also we had a Dyson once before and it wasn’t great.

Came home with neither then a friends son who works in a different Currys said they get more Shark vacuums returned than any other brand. Then I remembered went to try and find some bags for our Miele a while ago and the vacuum shop owner (independent) said the majority of his repair work came from Dysons.

Ended up buying a Sebo and it’s fab. But I prefer bagged corded uprights for proper carpet suction.

I've got a Shark liftaway. It's brilliant on the stairs. I'm disabled and have arthritic hands and I don't find it hard to use at all. It's probably the best vacuum cleaner I've ever had Smile

northernstars · 08/02/2020 12:51

Our last 2 Dyson handhelds died a death and I wouldn't buy them again. We have an old Dyson upright for our rooms on the 2nd floor. I got a Miele Junior for everyday use everywhere else. It does have a bag but I haven't changed it yet. It's lightweight and I use most of the attachments.

Paddingtonthebear which model of sebo do you have? And how does it work on the stairs? Does it have a long hose?

Paddingtonthebear · 08/02/2020 14:52

This one, though we got an ex demonstrator so it was a fair bit cheaper

We don’t have stairs so can’t comment on that but it comes with an extra hose and extra turbo brush. Its not light but it does a very good job on thick carpet.

“The Engineering Perspective.

As vacuum engineers ourselves, one reason we love Sebos is due to the sheer quality of the engineering. The motors are quiet, powerful and long-lasting. The drive belts are made of Kevlar so they dont snap, and are toothed so they dont slip. On the best-selling X7 (formerly X1/X4) upright machines, the brushrolls are driven by a steel shaft with a thick cotter pin, not a flimsy plastic cog that wears out. The machines are modular so they can be split down to find blockages in moments. They recline totally flat to go under furniture. There are no filters to wash (the disposable bag is the main filter). If you jam them up or block them, the electronics shut the motor down to prevent damage so you can remove the obstruction. The hoses almost never split. If you ever break the power cable they have a removable handle/cable that can be swapped over in moments by anyone. They adjust their height automatically to different floor types during use. The brushroll pops out with one click for cleaning and hair removal.

All Sebo vacuum cleaners are of anti-allergy design, indeed a Sebo machine was the first vacuum cleaner to be endorsed by the British Allergy Foundation for its overall anti-allergy design as opposed to just its filtration. Genuine Sebo bags are around £10 for a pack of 8. Will you use 8 in a year? If you do, that is 2p a day.

There is a reason hotels, hospitals, schools, cleaning companies, cruise ships, major PLCs, government departments, the Whitehouse, the Ritz and even Buckingham Palace often use Sebo machines: They work and they keep working.“

Shark Lift Away Pet Ant Wrap has been my life saver and much better than Dyson in my opinion! Carpets look like new!

Cheesecake53 · 08/02/2020 17:00

I have a Miele Cat and Dog, too. I got the special parkett twister head for my hard floors and it is a dream.

BrigitsBigKnickers · 08/02/2020 22:49

So if you have a shark lift away, which models do you have? There seems to be a baffling range, powered, anti tangle, pet etc. Confused! Confused

OP posts:
Goldwispa · 09/02/2020 20:23

Sebo or Miele

elc19 · 11/02/2020 07:51
