Best washable washing up sponge?

JanewaysBun · 20/01/2020 19:28

I use a minky for surfaces etc, should I get another for washing up or are there even better options? I saw this plastic/silicone one on insta but that has to go in microwave rather than washing machine to clean it (I have no dishwasher)

I use dishcloths - bamboo ones, but any cotton cloths can be washed. Packs of ten or twelve are available from Amazon or Ebay.

I use scrubmommy ones.

someone posted a method for making them out of old socks
you made a loom with clothes pegs and wove strips of old socks
they'd be washable,but not v abrasive

The Minky and e-cloth ones are rubbish imo. They go lumpy and fall apart in the washing machine.

Loofahs are really good. They dry very quickly so dont sit around damp and manky. They hold their shape and soften up really well after a couple of uses. Once you're done with it you can just bung it in your compost bin.

I just use dishcloths and a bit of elbow grease! They can be washed many, many times so last much longer than plastic sponges and are better for the environment.

I use Dishmatik and change the sponges regularly

PenguinsOnParade · 21/01/2020 14:34

I've found a few cheap versions of the Minky ones in local shops and they've actually held up better in the washing machine than the Minky ones. I have around 6-8 of them now just for the dishes and use cloths for wiping down surfaces.

@Davros - Unless I'm wrong, I think the point of the OP's question was to avoid using something disposable. And plastic.

DameFanny · 21/01/2020 14:47

Over loved away from sponges to dish brushes and cotton cloths. I've still got some micro fibre cloths for cleaning, but I won't be replacing them with anything but cotton or bamboo etc once they die.

The brushes I use are the wooden ones with replaceable heads - it takes a little time to get used to switching implements when you get to something that needs a scrub, but I couldn't find anything scrubby I liked.

Over loved = I've moved

Hmm

Not to be all housewifey but I knitted some, they work brilliantly, dry quickly and easy to make.

Thanks everyone!!
Yes I was trying to avoid buying disposable ones - I'm not super environmental I suppose but wanted to make an effort.

're brushes I actually got a plastic bristle one from Morrison's that's working well so far, sorry I don't know the name but it's white and seems fairly long lasting.

@Davros - I'm really sorry: my reply to you was snippy, and you didn't deserve that.

Davros · 21/01/2020 19:43

Aw, I can take it. And you were right! Thanks
