Talk to me about your washing machines

I'm feeling a little bit sad, my lovely reliable 12 year old Hoptpoint washing machine has died and I need a new one. The local engineer who I trust, (he's fixed plenty of other stuff for me) has advised me it is not worth repairing and to call it quits and buy a new one.

So I've been looking on line and I'm a rather bamboozled, things have certainly become more complicated over the last 12 years. So please help me with my choice and let me know what's good and what's not so good in the world of the modern washing machine.

To start with it needs to:

  1. Have a large 9kg capacity, no point being any higher as my tumble is also 9kg capacity and I don't like wet washing hanging about.
  2. Needs to have a 1600 spin, on at least 1 programme.
  3. Easy to use - that's what I liked most about my old old one, it was very simple to use 😢
  4. Ideally under £500, unless it's amazing and can also dry and iron the clothes.
  5. Quick wash setting.

Things I'm not bothered about:

  1. WiFi connectivity - can't see the point.
  2. Colour - it's tucked away in a utility room.
  3. Make - although I'd rather a name I recognise, Hoover, Hotpoint, AEG etc.

So if you have bought a washing machine in the last 2 years please let me know your good, bad and ugly tales to help me make up my mind.
Tia

I think Hoover & Hotpoint are considered to be very unreliable these days? Do you know anyone who gets Which? They do very good reviews. I have a Miele which is great but they are expensive.

@Mustbetimeforachange I've also heard good things about Miele but not sure I want to spend that much.
What do you like about it?

My Miele is 18.5 years old now, never broken down and used daily. I would replace it with another .

I'm also on the look, as I'm doing my kitchen / utility. My current one is also about 12 years old, and although it still works, I've discovered that it's not actually very good by today's standards, so I'm taking a contentious approach of looking for something a++ rated now, but which probably won't last more than 7 years, as technology will have advanced again; less water, less power consumption etc... This means Miele are out, as they last for decades! 🙂. I'm thinking a Beko might fit my needs (my criteria is different to yours) - up to date with current tech, good reviews, good prices.

@BinkySodPlop I meant to put A+++ energy rating as a requirement too.

The Miele hasn't had any problems in 4 years, is quiet. My only complaint is that some programmes don't rinse very well even though I use much less powder than they say.

We have a Miele. Outside your price range, but used 3 times a day, every day, and still going strong. Only 2 years old, but replaced a previous Miele that was 16 years old and dealt with 4 DC in real nappies!

It is a bit like flying a plane, though, in terms of the number of buttons to push to make it go.

My Samsung eco bubble is pretty good. High spin speed, quiet, easy to use, think about £350.

Our John Lewis make one is excellent, ours came with a three year guarantee and is the best washer I have had.
