Drying washing in the winter

Shortandsweet20 · 11/01/2020 19:53

Please share your tips, I haven't got space for a dryer atm and only recently got a new washing machine so don't really want to get a washer/dryer. I've got two airers which work okay but drying towels and bedding is a nightmare! Any tips please!

I have a heated airer with a cover & dehumidifier. Dries pretty quickly including towels etc

HeyMicky · 11/01/2020 21:43

Heated airer by a slightly open window. Cheap to run, holds plenty, no moisture in the room. Throw a fitted sheet over it to trap the heat

KittenVsBox · 11/01/2020 22:12

@Passthecake30 I try to part dry outside. I've failed today, but yesterday was good - dry and breezy (if cold).
It doesn't often dry fully, and may even come in feeling like I've done nothing but make it cold. But if it's not raining, once inside it drys much quicker.
I'm also in the position of being a SAHM, so really can put the washing out for an hour, and grab it if the weather changes.

A ceiling airer

ecuse · 11/01/2020 22:27

Lakeland heated airer!

Shortandsweet20 · 11/01/2020 22:29

Both airers are in the small spare room with a little radiator, never thought to open the window so will try that. Have been looking at dehumidifiers today, any recommendations?

I will definitely try a second spin, I have got outdoor space but I sometimes find it never dries or doesn't seem too anyway! I have seen the heated airers but was not sure if they were any good!

Thanks for all your suggestions!

@PaulRobinsonsWoodenLeg that could be a good solution! Will try that tomorrow!

Before I had a tumble dryer I would wash all the big stuff at home and then take it to the launderette to dry.

PaquitaVariation · 11/01/2020 22:33

If you have room for two airers in the spare room then surely you have space for a dryer in there? A dryer doesn’t need to go in the kitchen.

Dehumidifier

SurfingApple · 12/01/2020 04:56

Have been looking at dehumidifiers today, any recommendations?

We bought this one a year ago and are very pleased with it:
Meaco 20L Low Energy Dehumidifier, www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00HO963A6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_RHnN2X5naFzQm?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Shortandsweet20 · 12/01/2020 14:32

@PaquitaVariation I could fit a tumble dryer there but it is our spare room and we can often have family stay. I can easily move the airers but not a tumble dryer!

I keep getting specks of mould in my window frames but I never open the window when drying so maybe that will help solve that problem also!

To prevent mould allow damp air to escape through window. In rooms with humidity I definitely have windows open (or on latch) during warmest parts of the day. Room doors kept shut to keep dry heat in other rooms. Also wipe down any condensation that occurs.

Warmer air rises so I open upper vents where I have them.

mrsjackrussell · 12/01/2020 15:22

Iv had my heated airier from Lakeland for 4 years and it's great. You need the cover or just pop a sheet over like I do.
My daughter has a dehumidifier and she says that it dries her washing overnight.

Southmouth · 12/01/2020 18:05

I do have a tumble dryer but only try to use it when I really have to. I do a washing load in the evening, hang what I can on radiators and the rest on a clothes dryer. By the morning it’s mostly dry or not far off and I then carry the clothes dryer outside to the patio if it’s a dry day and not too windy to blow it over and it’s then dry before I know it.

helpmum2003 · 12/01/2020 18:12

We have a Meaco dehumidifier which is recommended by Which and is great..

ColaFreezePop · 12/01/2020 18:16

I have a meaco dehumidifier otherwise unless your house is drafty then you will get mould issues.

ecuse · 18/01/2020 08:37

Heated airer is good alone, and great with a cover over. You can buy covers, but I just use a big bedsheet. I can get 2 big or 3 small loads on it and with the cover it's dry in a couple of hours. Avoided buying one for ages because of the cost but if it packed in now I'd replace it immediately. Wouldn't be without it!

lotusbell · 18/01/2020 08:40

I'm the same as you, I use a dehumidifier, airers and I just hang out when I get chance. I font gave a problem with bedding - sheets and duvet covers are thin and benefit from an hour or so on the line then finish off inside in the warmth. Its joggers and sweatshirts my son wears that I struggle with as they're so thick. Hanging stuff up also helps but it's not nice having washing all over your house!

lotusbell · 18/01/2020 08:41

Don't have, not font gave!

yearinyearout · 18/01/2020 09:00

I hang my clothes on hangers and put them on the curtain rails in the bedrooms which are above radiators. Towels and sheets I hang over an airer.

theneverendinglaundry · 18/01/2020 14:24

I dont have space for a dryer either. The Lakeland heated airer (with cover) is the next best thing imo.

And when its warm enough to just put stuff outside or on a normal airer, the heated one folds away neatly until next winter.

lotusbell · 26/01/2020 09:56

This would be amazing to have! I have a small back yard and 2 lines going across it. If I could just invent some sort of awning which I could fit from wall to wall, its be ideal for drying outside in the rain!

Lakeland heated airer - game changer

theneverendinglaundry · 26/01/2020 10:03

I've also started doing an extra spin at the end of the cycle - it definitely reduces drying time.
