Emptying bagless vacuum cleaner and dust cloud?

For those of you with bagless vacuum cleaners do you find emptying it to be problematic. For example do you get a cloud of dust released in the process. Or is there a way to avoid this happening. Thanks

I put the cylinder into a plastic bag before opening it to empty so the dust cloud is kept in there; or sometimes I do it outside otherwise I end up hoovering the dust I’ve just scattered up again

I always empty mine when the main kitchen bin is empty so I can put it right at the bottom of the bin so any dust that comes up stays in the bin

My new cordless one just falls out into the bin, doesn't seem to generate much dust.

My old one corded one with a larger container, was a bit messier but probably because I didn't empty it every time. But not to the extent that I needed to clean up after emptying it.

Do you find it a faff? Or is it a minor inconvenience? Family of asthma sufferers here and looking to buy new vacuum cleaner. Was struck by the fact there are way more bagless than bagged.

Empty direct to bin outside = no problem

I'm asthmatic and empty mine outside on the patio into a bin liner. There is still a dust cloud tbh. It never all drops out of mine and needs shaking/hair pulling out.

It's not been enough to make me look for a bagged cleaner though, I've had at least two canister ones now.

jewel1968 · 11/01/2020 14:38

Thanks folks. Chic - what do you prefer about bagless over bagged?

Not forgetting buying bags really - as you said, most seem to be bagless nowadays, they claim it helps the suction and it may do. If there is a lot of fine dust in the canister (say building dust after doing something to the walls) I sometimes spray the inside of the bin liner with water and spray the dust if it flies around too much during emptying!

My asthma is mainly exercise-induced though, it's a balance between getting a good strong vacuum cleaner (because as asthmatics we like it dust-free) and the issue of emptying it!

Thanks Chic.

Don't you just empty it into your green bugs outside (or compost bin)?

jewel1968 · 11/01/2020 22:13

Didi- regardless of the receptacle don't you get a dust cloud released which if you are asthmatic is potentially a problem?

The shark ones have fine particles chambers and suck up more dust
I’ve never noticed a dust cloud but then it’s smaller and need emptying more regularly so no cloud

jewel1968 · 12/01/2020 00:43

Green - thanks. Interesting

I'm chronic asthmatic too and have a bagless hoover that I empty outside directly into bin, making sure if there's any wind it's away from me. But generally as I empty regularly there are no major plumes of dust.

jewel1968 · 12/01/2020 14:51

Thanks everyone. I think the general gist is that it is a bit of a faff but not a major faff. The main advantage I think is the fact that you don't have to buy bags so overall probably cheaper.
Our 15 yr old Miele was great but finally died. The bags were easy to dispose of and the HEPA filter ensured we weren't recycling the dust. DP very reluctant to go for bagless. I am more willing to try so good for me to hear experiences especially from asthmatic people. He is still unconvinced. He reckons not everyone is as sensitive to dust as he is. Hmmm but choice of bagged is far less than bagless.

I empty mine straight into the outside bin, if for any reason I can’t I empty it into a carrier bag and then tie it up to go in the bin
