I remember reading that Wallis Simpson made a point of ensuring that the Paris apt was full
of these for light and to "finish" a room.

What other things "finish" a room?

While also giving the impression of tidiness...
A lot of interiors photos show "a moment" eg table is laid for a meal or a book is left open on an armchair but I like a clear table between meals (except perhaps a case of flowers if I am organised) The same with my kitchen island
Where is the balance between character and tidiness?

Watching with interest!

I really like the way an indoor plant (in a fab planter) looks on hall tables, island or nook. The greenery provides a point of interest and I like that it makes it a 'living space'.

Indoor planters and pots that I love are so hard to find!

Hi yes I think I need to get better at looking after house plants - and yes a fab planter would be good - I do sometimes cheat with pots of supermarket herbs in a lovely pot.

I would say throws and/or sheepskins draped over chairs, piles of coffee table books neatly stacked, bowls with a single type of fruit displayed, large artistic plates or trays or platters with a curated collection of smaller ornaments at different heights, antique clocks ticking away, framed photos, chess sets laid out, that kind of thing.
