Moving out of my parents (finally - FREEDOM!) in February and just has the sudden realisation that I need EVERYTHING!

Please can you tell me what essentials I need? And any handy tips?

Hello, we have just moved and decided not to take all our old stuff with us (we kept the old house too) so started a fresh!
The first things we needed were a bed and blankets and pillows, cups, plates, bowls, cutlery. Something to cook in.
Does your new home come with white goods?
Tv and WiFi

Congratulations on your new house, my boyfriend and I have just purchased our first home - it's a very exciting but scary time! I made a list using a checklist app and have checked things off as I brought items. I have been slowly buying things over the months but our priority items were kitchen bits e.g. cutlery, plates, glasses etc. That way at least we can eat and drink. We pretty much have everything we will need for the kitchen and feel like other bits can come later when we are in and can figure out exactly what we want. We are lucky in that we don't have to move straight into our property so we can have a week or so to get it decorated before moving our belongings in. Good luck with your move Smile

I would add somewhere to dry your clothes. If you haven't got a dryer you'll need something like a clothes airer and if you have outside space, a washing line and pegs for warmer days.

Don't forget things like a dish rack and tea towels for the kitchen and you'll definitely need loo roll! Grin

Some things that are really handy but often forgotten are scissors, sellotape, batteries, basic cleaning supplies, Tupperware and a folder for all important documents (council tax bill, utility supply letters etc)

Apart from all the obvious things for the kitchen etc, it's worth making up a first aid box. I would have a walk around your parent's house and make notes of small things you might not think of like coasters...also when you do your first food shop don't forget the little things like salt/pepper/oil/spices.

Remember that most stuff doesn't have to be new. Make sure that you get your building and contents insured.
Set up your bills so that they come out of your bank account on payday. Shop around for the cheapest suppliers for gas and electric.
Don't spend a fortune decorating during the first year. Work out how the sunlight and the seasons impact on the rooms before making a considered choice of decor.
If the property has a garden and needs work, then start on that first before it gets too overgrown (especially if you have to bring garden waste through the house. You don't want to be spoiling new carpets).
Get all the work done that makes your home safe and dry like roofing and electrics before you either move in or amass too much stuff.

I forgot a basic first aid kit like ibuprofen/paracetamol, plasters, tissues, cold relief capsules and a little tub to keep them in Smile
